MPAA grants Peacock Releasing a waiver to allow existing trailers for Popeye the Sailor Man to be reedited to insert the Paramount logo ahead of the film's May 2008 release. Turner Broadcasting, who've held multimedia rights to the Popeye property outside of the newspaper strip since the 1990's, merged with Microsoft's Paramount subsidiaries to form TBS-Paramount less than three weeks ago.

Turner's MGM Grand Adventure indoor theme park on the Las Vegas strip could be on the chopping block as the TBS-Paramount merger raises questions on whether that park could potentially cannibalize the inclusion of UA and MGM properties at Paramount's outdoor Pinnacle park in Carson, California.

    Notes
Alvin and the Chipmunks was the first project since the Bagdasarian family sold the franchise to Microsoft in 2005. Historically ITTL, Paramount had been very thin on family properties outside of acquisitions.

    Logo trivia:
Alvin and the Chipmunks starts with the early-2000's Paramount logo, introduced IOTL for the studio's 90th anniversary. Except this title is the first to carry the byline "A TBS+Paramount Company" temporarily in the same Helvetica font as the old Gulf+Western byline from the Seventies and Eighties. A permanent byline, which will feature the actual TBS and Paramount fonts, will be unveiled later in 2008.

"I grew up in the Bay Area. When I was seven years old, my reward for keeping my room clean for the whole month of April 1990 was I got to go see the first TMNT movie at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland. On our way home, a drunk driver running a red light crashed into my parents' car. Next thing I knew, I woke up at Kaiser Permanente and the doctors gave me the horrible news that I sustained spinal injuries that left me with incontinence. I soon learned that my parents did not survive the wreck. I wore my seat belt and they didn't. Startng in August of that year after finishing physical therapy, I spent the rest of my childhood with my grandparents. I met Tiffany at an incontinence support group while we were both attending San Diego State University."

Las Vegas Raiders at Indianapolis Colts
    Venue: RCA Dome
    Kickoff: 3:30 EST
    TV: SBC
Announcers: Mike "Doc" Emrick and Boomer Esiason

This game turned out to be the last Colts home game at the RCA Dome. Lucas Oil Stadium will become the Colts' new venue next season. The Raiders led 20-10 at the half, but midway into the third quarter, a pass interference penalty against Las Vegas DB Nnamdi Asomugah set up the Colts' comeback...

Emrick: "[Peyton] Manning fakes the hand off to [Joseph] Addai...Finds [Reggie] Wayne wide open...SCORE!!!! The extra point by Adam Vinatieri should slash the deficit by a field goal...and it's good."

In the fourth, a field goal tied the game at 20. But with five minutes left, Tom Brady needed to march the Raiders down the field to retake the lead. But on a second and ten from the Raider 45...

Emrick: "Brady in trouble, pursued by [Dwight] Freeney....FUMBLE...there's huge dogpile on the field...AND THE COLTS HAVE RECOVERED!!!!"

That fumble gave Peyton Manning a shorter field for one last miracle...

Emrick: "Manning all alone...finds the rookie [Anthony] Gonzalez...SCORE!!!!!!"

That touchdown punched the Colts' ticket to the 2008 Super Bowl by the score of 27-20. As a final farewell to the RCA Dome, the Colts invited the standing room only crowd to stay a few more hours to watch the NFC Championship.

    NFC Championship
Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers
    Venue: Lambeau Field
    Kickoff: 6 PM EST
    TV: CBS
Announcers: Jim Nantz and Phil Simms

On a snowy Sunday night, the Packers were heavily favored to win, with homefield advantage at a truly Frozen Tundra.

This year's NFC Championship was a back and forth shootout with Brett Favre and Kurt Warner combining for 500 passing yards. The game was tied at 21 late in the fourth quarter when Favre took the snap on third down.

Nantz: Favre out of the shotgun...looking for Driver...PICKED OFF BY PAT TILLMAN!!!! THE FROZEN TUNDRA HAS THAWED!!!!!
Simms: I don't believe it, Jim.

Yes, Pat Tillman is still alive. The death of Bin Laden early in Harvey Weinstein's presidency saves Tillman's life ITTL.

That interception and ensuing touchdown from Warner to Larry Fitzgerald won the game for Arizona 28-21. The Cardinals would now become the second team in four years to play in a Super Bowl in front of their home crowd.

"CM Punk's promo was totally unscripted. He was angry to hear about the cover-up that happened eighteen years ago. That promo came straight from the heart. To hear those fans boo their local police department so loudly speaks volumes. The ceremony portion of this special was videotaped in New York City at Radio City Music Hall.

Tiffany's interviews were recorded for this special months in advance in her office at the Mighty Ducks' corporate headquarters in San Diego. On the night this special aired, her team was en route to Houston where they began their first round playoff series against the Aeros.

A few of the Nine Old Men are featured here because Sir Daniel often accompanied his mentor Richard Williams on annual summer visits to the Disney studios for several years before Danny finally landed his current gig with the organization.

Sir Daniel took his tryout with Eric Larson in the summer and fall of 1983 before being officially hired by Disney in February 1984.

In the first few months he was at Disney, Sir Daniel was assigned to Fox for the Movietoon revival shorts, which ran from 1985 thru '91.

Daniel and Rachel met in a hallway on the Paramount backlot around 1982. Danny was working on Ziggy's Gift while Rachel was working on an uncredited rewrite of Young Sherlock Holmes. Frank Mancuso, Jr. would later say in interviews that his father came to regret letting the Abbotts slip through Paramount's fingers.

In 1974 when Daniel was beginning his career at age 16, Richard Williams became Daniel's legal guardian with the approval of a London magistrate. Earlier that year, Daniel had ran away from his abusive Southampton home and boarded an overnight train to London.

Daniel was the youngest animator on staff during the making of Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure. He was 17 when he served as the live action reference model for Raggedy Andy. He was 18 during full animation and turned 19 roughly two weeks after Columbia Pictures released the film in the United States.

In 1977, Columbia's then-chairman Peter Guber wanted to appoint Daniel and Eric Goldberg to run a reborn Screen Gems, but was vetoed by the higher ups at CBS because they felt both men were too young.

    Disney v. DeviantArt Update

In an emotional defeat for fan fiction creators, a federal judge in Sacramento has ruled against art community website DeviantArt. The site had been under fire from critics for the misappropriation of the likenesses of both Tiffany Disney and her spouse Joyce Chung in AB/DL fetish art and fan fiction. DeviantArt has now been ordered to pay Disney and Chung $300 million USD each in emotional distress damages. After the ruling was handed down, DeviantArt executives who hoped to appeal to the Supreme Court later this year, now say that the site's attorneys have advised them to stand down.

Jim Carrey accepts Warner Bros.' offer to revive the Ace Ventura character on two conditions. Firstly that Jim will act as a consultant without reprising the role himself. Secondly, because of the backlash surrounding the third act of the infamous 1994 flop, both Jim and studio chairman Mario Kassar have advised that screenwriters refrain from repeating the same transphobic stereotypes depicted in the original.

    Notes
The first act of Popeye the Sailor Man utilizes the 1929 storyline from the Thimble Theatre newspaper comic in which the Oyl family hire Popeye to captain a ship bound for Dice Island. The second and third acts focus on Popeye settling down in Sweethaven and the love triangle between himself, Bluto and Olive.

The theatrical trailer instantly went viral on YouTube, garnering more than 4 million hits upon its upload to Universal Pictures' official YouTube channel.

Turner Broadcasting System's United Artists subsidiary was the initial co-producer during principal photography. However, in late 2007, Turner merged with Microsoft's Paramount Communications subsidiary to form TBS-Paramount. Early trailers used the current United Artists logo, but the actual film would instead use the Paramount logo in tandem with Universal's.

The end credits are patterned after the "sliding door" titles from the 1930's Fleischer cartoons.

Popeye will return in Defenders of the Earth in 2012. In the meantime, look for Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, Lothar and The Phantom in the coming years.
