This story covers interactions of four different timelines. It was originally posted in the Writers’ Forum under Project Infinity | alternatehistory.com. There is the Alpha timeline which is OTL but set mostly in the 2040s so as to avoid issues with current politics. The Delta and Beta timelines are taken respectively from prior postings in this forum at https://www.alternatehistory.com/fo...ublican-in-1912-4-parts-final-version.546689/ and

PROJECT INFINITY

Camp David Presidential Retreat Maryland, USA 1000 hours EST 15 December 2040 (Beta Earth)

Robert Brunk, the outgoing Secretary of Energy, was nervously tapping his armrest while waiting to brief the President-Elect, on the country’s most secret project. He was glad to be leaving government service but was also melancholy about the prospect of no longer knowing of developments in what he considered the biggest discovery in human history. They were in a rustic cabin and the room had a large fireplace with comfortable furnishings. The Secretary and his fellow briefers sat in overstuffed chairs arrayed around an oval wooden table. If not for the large tabbed black binders on the table in front of each chair one would think they were in a ski lodge. The one unoccupied chair was meant for the President-Elect who entered the room precisely on-time.

The Secretary and the other briefers quickly stood to face her. She, like the briefers, was dressed in what could best be described as winter casual attire. As requested, she was alone and seemed quite at ease. The Secretary spoke first, “Madame President, thank you for taking time out of your transition to attend this briefing. I believe you know Admiral James Roberts, the head of Cyber-Command, and this is Dr. Maria Hernandez, the Acting Director of Project Infinity.”

Patricia Townsend asked everyone to be seated and reminded the Secretary that she was still only the President-Elect, but added she would go with the title Madame President, if only to save a couple of syllables. Townsend asked why the President wasn’t there, and the Secretary explained the outgoing Commander-in-Chief preferred to let her be briefed so she could make any decisions on how to proceed without being prejudiced by comments he might make, but he would certainly come after the briefing if she wished.

Noting the lack of any electronic devices and the large briefing books, President-Elect Townsend asked if the briefing was going to be done using only tools from the last century. She was surprised when the answer was yes. Even more surprising was the news that following the briefing the contents of the briefing books would be burned in the fireplace heating the room.

When the President-Elect asked why her nominee for Secretary of Energy was not present it was explained that even though the Secretary-Designate had full security clearances the current President preferred Townsend only read in other parties after she had assumed office. Dr. Hernandez was the first to brief, and the President-Elect asked her if she could give her some personal background. Dr. Hernandez responded that she should start by explaining she was born on another Earth.

The President-Elect turned slightly toward the Secretary with what could best be described as a scowl saying, “Were it not for the presence of Admiral Roberts I would assume this was one of the thankfully soon to be former President’s elaborate practical jokes. Also, even he isn’t that big a dick, so I’ll assume this is real, but if not fess up right now.” The Secretary looked like he was going to throw up, while the Admiral simply appeared quite uncomfortable. Stifling a giggle, Dr. Hernandez chose to respond, “Madame President, I can assure you this is no joke; I am from one of three other similar Earth’s which this world has the ability to communicate with and travel to.”

When the President-Elect asked if the project was a proof of the multiverse Dr. Hernandez was impressed. Most people took longer to accept the truth of her statements, never mind immediately citing the theory behind Project Infinity. Hernandez then gave a little more of her background, explaining that she had been born on September 11, 2001, in New York City, which was an infamous date in United States history on her world due to terrorist attacks killing thousands in New York City and Washington, D.C. (not this world’s Washington City, Maryland).

The Doctor held her breath hoping the President-Elect didn’t storm out, as she explained the project only partially proved the multiverse theory, because, other than her home, which has been designated Alpha Earth, the other worlds in contact were created due to changes made as a result of time travel from Alpha Earth, or the President-Elects own world known as Beta Earth. Once again, the President-Elect surprised the briefers by simply stating she then assumed the other two Earth’s were Gamma and Delta Earth. This was confirmed and Townsend was directed to the four-page executive summary at the beginning of her briefing book.

It was explained that in August 2029 on Alpha Earth the United States military was trying the first test of a system using quantum entanglement to allow instantaneous communication no matter how far apart the entangled particles were. Hernandez explained that the test was successful beyond all expectations and appeared to allow not just communication but transportation or teleportation of matter. Dr. Hernandez explained that was when the Department of Energy took the lead on the project in her world, where it is known as Project Gypsy. By 2031 small objects had been teleported successfully. This was followed by lab animals who suffered no ill effects, and in June 2032 the first human traveled via teleportation. The energy curve for matter teleportation was such that it was not commercially viable to have everyone get rid of their automobiles, but transporting supplies and people to bases throughout the solar system was certainly a possibility.

Just such a test was being conducted on February 26, 2034, when the United States on Alpha Earth was attempting to teleport supplies to their new Moon Base. During the test the transmitter received interference from a weather satellite, but it was determined the satellite was actually orbiting Earth on January 22, 1967 – precisely 67 years 35 days 4 hours 6 minutes and 11 seconds earlier. It became clear there was entanglement of particles not only across space, but time as well.

Subsequent tests involved sending microsatellites into orbit using Project Gypsy, confirming the date by scanning the constellations from orbit. Attempts to access other times generally failed, but adjusting the power did allow sending satellites back 134 years 70 days and change or double the first “jump.” There were variances of less than a day depending on where the target was in the leap year cycle. Further, even though the Alphas had been able to establish a link to January 1967 the link moved forward in time with them, so that as a month passed in the Alpha of 2034, a month passed in the time they could link to, be it 1967 or 1900. The micro-satellites had consistent communication with the point of departure, and homing devices allowed retrieval without incident. The next question was whether and when to try and send humans back.

Townsend was about to interrupt Dr. Hernandez when there was a knock at the door. The Marine guard indicated lunch was ready, and orderlies brought in what the briefers and the President-Elect had selected from the menus left in their respective cabins that morning. After leaving fresh water, coffee and soft drinks the orderlies exited and what was turning from a briefing into a dialogue continued.

The President-Elect commented that it was obvious humans were in fact sent back in time and she could do without the drama, but questioned why the experiments progressed so quickly, asking whether human life on Alpha Earth was not as important as it was on her own Earth. She also asked why her world wasn’t Alpha. Maria Hernandez smiled, and sincerely complimented the President-Elect on her insight. She explained that her Earth – Alpha Earth, was the Earth that, after developing time travel, directly or indirectly created the other three Earths or timelines, including the Beta Earth they were presently occupying.

As to why the experiments proceeded so quickly, it was because from 2022 to 2038 Alpha Earth was involved in a series of ever more vicious wars which ultimately drew in the United States and her allies, and even though it was accepted as fact that they could not alter their own timeline less they create a paradox, the government believed they might be able to refine the process to have shorter jumps. This would have made Project Gypsy into a valuable intelligence tool, and perhaps even a weapon, by leaving weapons hidden in the past that could be activated in the present.

On January 7, 2035, Project Gypsy sent the first human time traveler back to December 3, 1967. The traveler was deposited in a clear desert area in Nevada and stayed just long enough to take astronomical readings to confirm the date and activate the return signal. He returned without incident, and there were a half dozen similar tests over the following month. Shortly thereafter small teams of two to four chrononauts were traveling back to the late 1960s and early 1900s for periods ranging from two days to a week.

It quickly became clear there was no way to shorten or lengthen a jump, and it was deemed impracticable to leave any kind of weapon behind due to the danger in transporting it, and out of concern about discovery. There were no indications of any effects on Alpha Earth’s timeline and, given the lack of utility toward the war effort, the United States President decided to suspend further travel absent some indication any other power had its own program. They were allowed two final jumps solely for purposes of historical research.

A retired Harvard Professor of 20th Century History named James McCarthy traveled with a security escort to 1968 for three weeks to gather data on the 1968 Presidential election when Nixon defeated Humphrey. Unknown to the security escort, McCarthy had a conversation with Henry Kissinger where he evidently broke security. The United States in 1969 then acted differently than it had in the Alpha timeline, and the result was the Sino-Soviet War and the Beta timeline. Not realizing what had happened, McCarthy was permitted to go to 1902, where shortly before retrieval he left the security officer and removed his tracker/retrieval device. There were attempts to locate McCarthy, but they met with no success, and as it appeared there was no damage to the timeline, the Project was quietly suspended. McCarthy had in fact become a confidant of Teddy Roosevelt and encouraged him to run again in 1908. This created the Gamma timeline. The Alpha timeline did not become aware of the other two timelines until 2038.

Admiral Roberts was preparing to brief on the discovery of the other timelines when the President-Elect interrupted saying she knew a Professor McCarthy at Harvard – was it the same man? Dr. Hernandez explained that as McCarthy was born in 1968 it was another version of the same person. To make matters more complicated, the McCarthy who Townsend knew was also sent back in time to 1905 for historical research by Beta Earth’s Project Infinity. The Gamma timeline had already been formed by his Alpha counterpart’s actions, but the world McCarthy traveled to in 1905 shared the same history as both the Alpha and Beta Earths to that point in time. The Beta McCarthy was unable to get close to Roosevelt before he left office in 1909, but subsequently gave him enough advice to allow for a successful return to the Presidency as a Republican in 1913. This led to the forming of the Delta Earth timeline.

The President-Elect remarked that this was giving her a headache, but before proceeding she wanted to write out some specific questions.

Dr. Hernandez had sat in on almost a dozen similar briefings on Alpha Earth, Delta Earth, and here on Beta Earth. Usually those being briefed were in groups made up of military and scientific personnel new to the Project, and the briefers weren’t Cabinet Secretaries or Flag Officers. Maria made a point of personally giving many of the briefings, and everyone had questions, almost endless questions. The Director was usually able to refer the parties to their briefing book with an instruction to save questions for the end, but you simply didn’t say that to the woman who would soon be President of the United States.

Inevitably everyone’s first question was whether they had an analogue on one of the other Earths. In most cases the answer was no. On Gamma and Delta Earths no one born after the early 1930s had an analogue to anyone on Alpha or Beta Earth, or indeed with each other. As between Alpha and Beta Earths anyone born before 1968 had an analogue, until one or the other passed away. There were some exact analogues after the split, but given the changes wrought on Beta Earth from the Sino-Soviet War virtually no one born after the early 1970s had an exact analogue.

The President-Elect once again surprised Dr. Hernandez with her questions. She handed them to the Secretary who read them aloud:
  • Why is someone from Alpha Earth Director of a project on Beta Earth?
  • Is the existence of the other timelines known to the general public on any of the other Earths?
  • Do we know or have any theories on why jumps and “double jumps” are locked into just over 67 and 134 years respectively? Have there been attempts to go back further, or into the future? For that matter do we have any indication of jumps coming from the future?
  • Are you confident there have not been other timelines created that just haven’t been detected as yet?
  • Most important – what is this costing, what does MY United States get out of the program, and what do you propose I do once I take office?
Dr. Hernandez turned toward the President-Elect, “Excellent questions, Madame President. I’ll begin by addressing why I’m here, and for much of the rest will make references to your briefing book. Before I begin – is there anything else?” The President smiled slightly and asked, “On a personal note, is there a Patricia Townsend in any of the other timelines?”

Dr. Hernandez continued as neither of the men in the room seemed anxious to jump in to answer the President-Elect’s questions. The Director began by addressing the last question of whether there was another Patricia Townsend in one of the other timelines. The President-Elect was not surprised that she had no analogue, but seemed taken aback when told that her father on Alpha Earth was killed in Vietnam in 1971 before having met her mother. When it was explained that, with no Sino-Soviet War on Alpha Earth, the North Vietnamese regime didn’t collapse, and United States involvement continued into 1973 with South Vietnam falling in 1975. Patricia Townsend had prided herself on having an analytical mind, and being able to make decisions divorced from emotion, but her voice noticeably cracked when she held up a hand to stop Dr. Hernandez as she said, “So, I would not exist but for a war that literally killed hundreds of millions of people, and that war would not have happened but for an offhand comment of an asshole history professor.” Admiral Roberts finally spoke up, “Yes, Madame President, that is correct. You’ve heard of the butterfly effect, or the term ‘For want of a nail the battle was lost,’ that’s what we’re dealing with here.”

The President-Elect took just a moment to digest what she had been told and motioned Dr. Hernandez to continue. The Director went on to address her own presence on Beta Earth, explaining that there were exchanges of personnel between the various Earths to facilitate sharing of information and resources. She explained she was only the Acting Director of Infinity and would be formally replaced by a Beta when she returned to her own timeline.

Hernandez noted that Alpha Earth had become aware of the other timelines starting with Gamma Earth in February 2038, followed by Delta Earth in April 2038 and Beta Earth in September 2038. Gamma Earth, in its experiments became aware of the other timelines in March 2036, before it even attempted time travel. The Director then referred Townsend to the diagrams and captions at Tab C of her briefing book.

The Admiral then took over explaining how, even though Alpha’s Project Gypsy time-travel components had been dormant for some time, they still did monitoring and experimentation. In 2038 they “fired the system back up” once the last of their major wars appeared won. The President-Elect read along with the explanation in her briefing book explaining that all the teams sent out during the active phase of the time-travel component had left hidden camouflaged beacon-recorders at predetermined locations. These devices were extremely small and would self-destruct if handled without having received a specific cipher signal. After each of the teams sent back had returned, the devices were recovered and downloaded. Two devices were not found. They were of course the ones left in the Beta and Gamma timelines. It was assumed that the rogue Professor McCarthy had destroyed or deactivated them, but in point of fact they existed only in the new timelines. This was discovered when the Project was again running, and a signal was received from one of devices which was evidently still recording. It was subsequently determined that the device was broadcasting from another timeline – specifically the Gamma Earth timeline.

The Gamma version of Gypsy/Infinity was called C+, and it confirmed the existence of other timelines shortly after the Project began in 2036. Gamma Earth had a distinct advantage, as Professor McCarthy had left a detailed message outlining his knowledge of Project Gypsy. The message would have been written off as a madman’s rant, but for the fact that McCarthy was able to show them how to activate and deactivate the beacon/recorder which clearly represented a futuristic technology. Since McCarthy was not a scientist, he was unable to give useful insight into reverse engineering the device. The Gamma Earth Teddy Roosevelt of 1913 classified the message with instructions to give it to his successor on January 7, 2035 (the date of the first-time travel from Alpha Earth). Project C+ started shortly after that point, and though they were unable to time travel, they were able to monitor signals from the other three timelines.

When Alpha Earth reactivated Project Gypsy in 2038 the surprise they got from receiving a signal from a device they left in what appeared to be another timeline, was quickly replaced by utter shock when their monitors showed a dour gentleman identifying himself as the Director of Project C+ asking to speak to his counterpart.

Dr. Hernandez then took over again, explaining that she at that time was already part of the Alpha timeline’s Project Gypsy. There were numerous discussions between Alpha and Gamma Earth’s Gypsy/C+ personnel over the following weeks. It appeared at that time that Alpha was significantly ahead on time-travel and matter teleportation technology, while Gamma having had the benefit of access to Professor McCarthy’s beacon/recorder had made great leaps in communications as well as monitoring other timelines. At the time of initial contact with the Alphas, the Gammas did not reveal the existence of Beta or Delta Earths. A suggestion was made for Alpha Earth to send a team to Gamma Earth to exchange technology. After Marine Corps Captain Marty Valenti safely made a trip from Alpha to Gamma and back, a team from the Alphas was sent to coordinate with the Gammas, as they called themselves.

Dr. Hernandez repeated what her government had told her - that it became immediately obvious to the Alphas that the Gammas weren’t sharing all they had, but the Alphas still obtained valuable new information. It was first believed that the Gammas called themselves that based on their program being designated Project C+. It was only after the Alphas on their own discovered Delta Earth that the Gammas acknowledged they had already known about both Delta and Beta Earth. This caused some tension between the Alphas and Gammas, but as the Gamma timeline had been by far the most violent of the four timelines their secrecy was attributed by the Alphas, and later the other timelines, as being a cultural quirk.

Secretary Brunk finally decided to speak for the first time since the briefing had started. “Madame President, let me take a moment to answer some of your questions directly.” He then explained that no timeline’s general populace knew of Project Infinity, Project Gypsy, Project C+, or the Delta timeline’s Operation Reach. In each timeline the respective program was controlled by the United States, and in the Beta and Delta timelines the information was shared respectively with the Federated Commonwealth and Imperial Federation.

It was only recently determined that other timelines were created in almost every jump, but when changes were generally insubstantial the timelines merged back into the Alpha or Beta timelines. The only merged timeline where it appears there was a significant historical change was one where Alpha Earth's Nelson Mandela was imprisoned by the repressive South African regime, and subsequently became South African President winning the Nobel Peace prize. In a timeline dubbed Epsilon, Nelson Mandela died in prison.

The Secretary continued:
I bring this up now before addressing costs to explain that, based on information garnered by the Alphas, the Epsilon timeline was created by the Gammas and merged into Alpha by the Gammas. This directly contradicts the Gamma protestations that they have not developed their own ability to travel through time. It is also believed the Gammas have used their technology to create the time limits on jumps in the other timelines, while the Gammas themselves can jump back in time, without our jump limitations. They also seem to have created interference that either prevents jumps from the future back into any of the timelines, or if they do occur the interference forecloses their detection. They are currently working to prevent communication or travel between the Alpha, Beta or Delta timelines. We think they may be trying to get our technology and resources and then merge us into a much more backward timeline. We don’t think they know we know, but they have in essence declared war on us, and that will impact costs as well as what you should do.

Dr. Hernandez didn’t contradict the Secretary even though she knew from a personal contact with an Alpha presently in the Gamma timeline that the Gammas had not in fact been able to accomplish time travel. In fact, the Deltas likely could do it, but from her own observations she believed their assurances that they had not attempted time travel. She had surmised that the Epsilon timeline had most likely been created by the Betas, but that her government was hiding it for some reason.

The President-Elect asked what all of the outlined assumptions were based on, and the Secretary responded it came from information supplied by Alpha representatives. He concluded by asking the President-Elect if she would like a brief rundown from the General on the history of each timeline.

The President-Elect agreed that a short history lesson would be helpful. She examined the appendix in her briefing book that outlined the differences in each timeline’s history. Her world was logically called Beta Earth because it appears to have been the first continuing separate timeline created by the Alpha travels. The history of the Alpha and Beta timelines did not diverge until the Sino-Soviet War in 1969.

It appears the Soviet leader in the Alpha timeline had sent a message to the Americans asking what the United States would do if the USSR employed a nuclear weapon to settle the border dispute they were having with China. In that timeline Nixon let the Chinese know of the query. The result was the Chinese backing off, and it was the first step in Alpha Earth’s President Nixon having a rapprochement with Communist China. If only that had happened on her world. In the Beta timeline the message from the Soviets and the United States reaction happened the same way, but for some reason occurred months earlier. It resulted in Mao believing there would be a Soviet nuclear attack, so he ordered a first strike. She knew her own history all too well. The massive Chinese casualties, and subsequent diaspora, followed by the Soviet Civil war and the other nuclear exchanges in the Mid-East and on the Indian Sub-continent. Alpha Earth did not have the hundreds of millions of casualties that her world suffered, but North Vietnam never collapsed, and the Alpha version of her own father died there as a result. There was a British Commonwealth in the Alpha timeline, but no Commonwealth Federation. Still the Alphas had no new nuclear exchanges until the last decade, and they were now getting technical advice from the other timelines on cleaning up from that radiological disaster.

The Delta timeline was created from the Beta Earth’s Project Infinity. The divergence from the Alpha and Beta timeline appears to have been Teddy Roosevelt winning a third term as a Republican in 1912. This resulted in the United States buying Baja from Mexico, as well as Greenland from the Danes. By the end of the 20th century those territories, along with Puerto Rico, had obtained statehood, with Greenland’s population surprisingly approaching a half million. There were a series of wars throughout the 20th century, but the United States actually mediated an end to the Great War, forming an “Inter-Continental Congress” in the process. There was a financial panic in the 1930s, but nothing approaching the Great Depression. No other conflict approached the size of the Alpha-Beta timelines World War II, but there were nuclear exchanges. The Deltas had an Imperial Federation formed that was analogous to the Beta timeline’s Federation Commonwealth., but it came into being decades earlier, 1948 to be specific. The Deltas like the Betas had worlds much more economically and politically consolidated than the Alpha timeline.

The Gamma timeline was considerably different from the others. The briefing book indicated that the facts delineated were presumed accurate, but they relied solely on information provided to the Alphas by the Gammas. Since the Gammas were so secretive and didn’t allow Alphas outside their Project C+ facilities, it was deemed possible that some or much of the history may consist of intentional misinformation. The Gamma history departs from the other timelines at some point before 1908 when Teddy Roosevelt ran for a third term. The United States was much more aggressive, with a continued expansion of the American military, especially the Navy. The Great War started in a similar fashion as in the other timelines, but it lasted much longer. This was because of a United States invasion of Mexico in 1910, which resulted in the annexation of Baja, Chihuahua, and Sonora. The Americans delayed sending ground forces into Europe due to having to maintain a large occupation force in Mexico and in various Caribbean nations. When the War did end in 1920, France was almost completely occupied and the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian Empires had all collapsed. Germany had been cut off from colonies outside Europe by the American and Royal Navies. There was an uneasy peace wherein Germany dominated the continent absorbing Austria and other German-speaking lands (less Switzerland). What followed was a cold war between Germany and the Anglo-American Alliance. From 1928 to 1939 there was an economic Depression that was far worse than the Great Depression. There was no Hitler, perhaps because the Germans turned left instead of right. Communists took over throughout the continent and the socialist policies only made the Depression worse. There were a series of conflicts that began in early 1939 with most of continental Europe aligned with Soviet Russia and Japan, against an Anglo-American Alliance and China. Eventually the Germans deployed nuclear weapons against the United Kingdom, wiping out the Royal Family and most of Parliament in 1946. The Americans retaliated in kind and by 1950 had succeeded in pummeling most of the continent as well as much of Asia.

The history provided by the Gammas ended there, but the material seemed to indicate that in the Gamma Earth of 2040 the United States had taken a page from ancient Rome. There was a United States of America, consisting of the same fifty states in the Alpha and Beta 1969, plus eight Canadian states (combining PEI and New Brunswick, while excluding an independent Quebec), and Northern territories including Greenland. Baja, Chihuahua, and Sonora are also states. The capitol is in Ottawa. There is a United States of the Atlantic consisting of five states in the British Isles including Ireland plus Iceland (which was evidently occupied by the United States in one of the wars), and includes various island territories, with a capitol in a rebuilt London. Then there is the United States of Australasia consisting of Australia and New Zealand, plus Antarctic territories, small Pacific and Indian Ocean islands, with a capitol in Canberra. The Capitol of the three constituent parts is in Washington, D.C. Many former American or British possessions including Quebec, the Philippines, Malta, New Guinea and other nations in Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Caribbean, and the Americas are independent, but have the status of United States Associates. It is unclear what their exact relationship is with the various USAs. No information was provided on Europe or other areas of Gamma Earth of 2040. The briefing book indicated it is believed the Gammas may have withheld information because radiological damage on Gamma Earth is still very severe, and much more persistent than even Beta Earth experienced following the Sino-Soviet War.

The President-Elect joked “Well, I know where I’m not vacationing next year.” The others joined in her laugh, but they would soon get down to serious business.

The President-Elect asked if she could meet representatives from the Gamma and Delta timelines and was informed that a summit of sorts was being discussed for the United States Presidents from each timeline, as a secure four-way audio-visual communication system was now in place. The outgoing Beta and Alpha Presidents had each elected not to go ahead with the summit since their successors would be in place in January 2041. President-Elect Townsend agreed the Project Infinity Team could convey that she would agree to participate in a summit at some point in late February 2041.

In the meantime, Townsend wanted to get more information on the other three timelines. When told there were representatives from each timeline working on Project Infinity, she asked how integrated they were into the Project. Dr. Hernandez explained that except for herself the representatives acted more or less as Ambassadors. She had been asked to temporarily head Project Infinity to get it on track with the Alpha timeline’s Project Gypsy and expected to be “home for Christmas.” She had performed a similar role for the Deltas, but the Gammas had politely refused her services (at least that was what her Alpha contact on Gamma Earth had said). The President-Elect wanted to meet with the other timeline representatives. It was decided that shortly after her inauguration they would be brought to a secure location for a meet and greet.

The rest of the briefing did little to assuage a growing feeling of Townsend that the Gammas, and perhaps the all too benevolent Alphas, represented a threat to her world. Security seemed totally geared toward preventing people on Beta Earth learning of Project Infinity, with little thought as to whether they should be sharing so much with the other timelines. It was clear from the briefing that Beta Earth had the most advanced technology in radiological amelioration. This tech largely rose from the Beta United States Agency for Scientific Research and Development (ASRD) chartered in the aftermath of the Sino-Soviet War. The technology was being freely with the other timelines. Townsend wondered what exactly the Betas got out of the exchanges. She was disappointed when aside from a few helpful gadgets the biggest contribution of the Alphas seems to have been in the form of a series of books from the Alphas called Game of Thrones (which answered her question as to why they printed the whole series all at once). There was also a lot of other comedic and dramatic content coming from the Alphas. When asked what literature the Alphas were taking from the Beta timeline, Dr. Hernandez confessed that most Alphas found much of Beta entertainment “depressing.” Much more helpful and practical was the rechargeable, long life, low cost, sodium and zinc battery technology provided by the Deltas.

Townsend decided her first priority as President would be to increase safeguards on information going from the Beta timeline to the other Earths. Beta Earth had not yet shared their recent breakthrough on developing a cost-effective fusion reactor, and she wanted to keep it that way for now. She was especially concerned that the Gammas were not forthcoming with more information, and wanted an in-depth assessment of whether they were really trying to steal tech and merge or fold the other timelines, and if so to what end.

The Secretary informed the President-Elect that the outgoing President ordered that she be given full cooperation and carte blanche on ordering action on Project Infinity even before inauguration. Townsend silently admitted to herself that the soon to be former President wasn’t quite the asshole she thought he was. The President-Elect said she wanted increased security, by setting up a panel to scrutinize and approve any tech transfers to the other timelines, and in no way would any additional technology or research on the recent fusion breakthrough be made without her explicit approval. Since Roberts was going to be continuing in his current role in the new Administration, Townsend indicated he would be her point of contact. In the first week after the Inauguration she wanted a meeting with him, her own Secretary of Energy, and various other individuals she would identify later, but definitely including Intelligence and Security personnel. Finally, before meeting with the representatives from the other timelines, she wanted to meet with as many people as possible from the Beta timeline who have visited the other timelines, and she didn't want Gammas getting any greater access to Beta Earth than the Betas were getting on Gamma Earth.

The White House Situation Room - 2003 hours EST 24 January 2041(Beta Earth)

The three military officers and two civilians all stood when President Townsend entered the room with the newly confirmed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. After the President motioned to them, they each took seats around a utilitarian conference table with comfortable ergonomic chairs. The room had all the latest technology needed to brief the Commander-In-Chief or contact virtually anyone in the world, but today, except for the room’s artificial lighting, ventilation system, and an old-style overhead projector, all the tech was turned off. As usual all personal electronic devices had been checked with the Marine Guard at the small desk outside the conference room. The in-house tech had been turned off out of an abundance of caution, in that it was thought to be possible (but not likely) that one or more of the other timelines might be able to tap into virtually any electronic communication on the planet.

The President was seated at the end of the of the conference table. The civilians were on her left and military officers on her right. Since, other than her being at the head of the table, there was no assigned seating, Townsend wondered for just a moment if that was a coincidence, or some protocol unknown to her. She would have to remember to ask one of her aides later. To her immediate left was Janice Milner, the new Secretary of Energy, followed by CIA Director Thomas Li, and Dr. William Hansen, the recently elevated Director of Project Infinity. On the President’s right were Space Corps Admiral James Roberts, the head of Cyber Command, Navy Vice Admiral Maureen Callahan, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army Major General Jorge Lopez, who had recently been placed in charge of internal security at Project Infinity. The President would have liked her choice for Secretary of Defense to have been present, but his nomination was being slow walked in the Senate. Milner and Li had only been briefed on Project Infinity in this very room a few hours earlier.

Townsend addressed the group, “We all know why we’re here, so let us get right into it. I would like to be up to date before meeting with the other timeline representatives tomorrow. General Roberts was on the team that initially briefed me and, except for Dr. Hansen, the others in this room are here at my direction. So, Dr. Hansen - tell me how you came to replace Dr. Hernandez at Project Infinity.”

Hansen started to rise but sat again when the President waved him down. The Director explained that he had been with the Project from the beginning and had actually traveled back in time. After Beta Earth had been contacted by the Alphas, and exchanged representatives, it was deemed helpful to have Dr. Hernandez come over to aid us as she had the Deltas. Hansen explained her position was always advisory, and he formally took on the title of Director when she returned to the Alpha timeline. The President pointed out that in her initial briefing she had been told Gamma Earth was first to confirm the existence of other timelines, and asked what they told the Betas at the time of first contact. The Director explained that the Gammas were the first to detect the other timelines, but simply monitored the Beta and Delta Earth communications until the Alphas made contact with the Deltas, followed by the Betas. Hansen tried to assure the President that he was fully up to date on the Project, and available to answer any questions. To that end he gave an update in almost mind numbing detail on Project Infinity. Dr. Hansen utilized the overhead projector to show everything from organization charts to power consumption projections for the next year. Townsend interrupted the presentation and thanked him. Hansen couldn’t help but feel she was annoyed.

Knowing her two political appointees had only just been briefed on the Project, the President turned next to the military side of the table. Admiral Callahan spoke first. She detailed the coordination that had been done with Admiral Roberts and Cyber Command to expand capabilities to monitor transmissions made in the other timelines, which was already yielding significantly more information on the Gammas. When challenged on the ethics of eavesdropping by Dr. Hansen, Callahan pointed out that the Gammas were definitely already eavesdropping on the other timelines, and she was personally convinced the Alphas were doing the same, with the Deltas being an open question. DIA was prepared to turn over any ops as directed to CIA, or to operate in conjunction with them as ordered. General Roberts then confirmed that if ordered they were able to insert operatives into the other timelines with “high confidence” that the teleportation could be masked.

General Lopez spoke next, outlining what security measures he had instituted in the past two weeks. Explaining the civilian scientists being naturally collegial were resistant to the escorts he had placed with each of the other timelines' representatives, he also indicated, “No offense to Admiral Roberts,” but Space Corps personnel in Cyber Command, who were the military’s own scientific and tech community, weren’t much better. After interviews with the visitors and Project Infinity staff it became obvious that, while the other timelines might not yet have the technology behind the Beta’s recent fusion breakthrough, they were all well aware of it. Dr. Hansen objected, calling the escorts minders and emphasizing the need for trust. It was then that Lopez pointed out that on Dr. Hansen’s time travel trip he accompanied the infamous Dr. McCarthy and lost him, thus creating the Delta timeline.

The briefing continued for another hour. The President was not yet prepared to order a surreptitious insertion into another timeline but made clear she was keeping options open. They adjourned, and Admiral Callahan asked if she could have a word with the President in private. Callahan explained that the President needed to know two things going forward. “First, we might, and I emphasize might, have a legitimate defector from Gamma Earth. Second, we almost certainly have at least one mole from another timeline here on Beta Earth.”

The White House Oval Office - 1430 hours EST 25 January 2041(Beta Earth)

The small coterie of visitors exchanging pleasantries with President Townsend could have been mistaken as being any one of the dozens of groups that came to have short meet and greets with every sitting President, but of course these people were different. Most of the visitors had come from one of the three other Earths that the President had first learned existed after winning election late in 2040. There were three representatives from each timeline, who met the President without the escorts that had recently been assigned to each of them. Also present was CIA Director Li and Dr. William Hansen, the head of Project Infinity.

The President hadn’t really heard anything new in this short meet and greet, but she had merely wanted to see if she could tell from talking to her guests that they weren’t from her world. She had met earlier in the day with a number of Beta Earth representatives who had traveled to the other timelines. Townsend found herself now silently agreeing with the assessments from a young man who had dealings with people from each timeline and had actually visited Delta Earth. The scientist had commented that speaking with people in the other timelines was like talking with someone from a different generation. She found this especially true with the Deltas, who were friendly, but much more formal than the others. The Alphas seemed to fit in with everyone, while the Gammas were polite without being very forthcoming.

The representatives had varied ethnicities, with five men, three woman, and one person the Alphas explained was “binary.” All three of the Gammas were white males, but they were United States citizens from Wales, Alberta, and New Zealand respectively. While the United States in the Beta and Delta timelines each had much closer relations than the Alphas with Federated Commonwealth (or what the Deltas called the Imperial Federation), only in the Gamma timeline had there been a true merger with large parts of the former British Empire.

As the meeting was breaking up, Bill Foster, the senior Gamma representative from Alberta, complained of chest pain. Within two minutes a wheelchair was brought into the Oval Office by a Navy Corpsman accompanied by the sick man’s escort. The others in the room were asked to be patient while Dr. Foster was taken to the White House Medical Unit. Foster assured his fellow Gammas that he was already starting to feel better but would go to the infirmary just to be sure.

On arriving in the infirmary Foster was wheeled to a small alcove just past the pharmacy. The Corpsman withdrew, and out came Vice Admiral Maureen Callahan and Major General Jorge Lopez. They were both in civilian clothing. Lopez spoke – “You slipped a note to your prior escort asking to defect, but warning that no electronic communications could be trusted. You obviously still want to defect, because you followed the instruction in the note your new escort gave you this morning to feign chest pain at the end of today’s meeting. This room is a Faraday Cage, so we should be able to speak freely. By the way your new escort here is FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington. Now, why do you want to defect and, if so, what can you tell us about possible moles or leaks on Beta?”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 2003 hours EST 5 February 2041 (Beta Earth)

Special Agent Terrence Washington sat in a small private dining room blocked off from a cafeteria at the Goddard Research Center. He was waiting for Dr. William “call me Bill” Foster to return from the restroom. Since the meeting at the White House where Bill’s desire to defect had been confirmed, they had set up a program wherein each representative lunched in private with the escort assigned to them at least twice per week. This was ostensibly to build a rapport, so the representatives would not feel they were being guarded – which they were. Harris knew his escort was a Special Agent with the FBI; what he didn’t know was that the agent was a Counter-Intelligence Specialist in the Bureau assigned to this case precisely because his Special Agent in Charge (SAC) opined “Terry is the best bullshit detector in the business.”

The first meeting at the White House had necessarily been short so as not to arouse suspicion among the other timeline representatives. These luncheons were being done with all the representatives and escorts, but none besides Washington and his charge were aware the room had been turned into a Faraday Cage. At their first meet Foster had agreed to continue to work as a representative for the Gammas, with a commitment to share intelligence in exchange for a promise not to return him to the Gamma timeline against his wishes. Somewhat concerning was the quick agreement of Foster to the arrangement, but information on almost microscopic monitoring devices placed at Goddard had proved true, so for now he was given the benefit of the doubt. Washington was planning to push Foster today to flesh out what he knew and what he could offer in much more detail.

The Goddard Research Center on Beta Earth was originally the Goddard Space Flight Center and remained important to NASA even after Cape Canaveral in Florida and The Johnson Space Center in Texas came into being. That changed when, in the wake of the devastation of the Sino-Soviet War, President Nixon created the Agency for Scientific Research and Development (ASRD) and placed it under the newly formed Department of Energy and Science. ASRD in many ways supplanted NASA, which saw an almost decade long moratorium on manned space flights following the success of Apollo 11 in July 1969.

The ASRD was charged with using science to ameliorate the effects of the radiological disaster caused by the first conflict between nuclear powers. In meeting that mandate the agency scooped up a large number of researchers, medical professionals, engineers and technicians from various disciplines. This included a fair number of suddenly under-utilized NASA engineers and scientists. It was quickly decided that the Goddard Space Flight Center could be re-purposed to accommodate ASRD. The proximity to Washington was also a major factor in the decision to locate the ASRD headquarters at Goddard.

When the Beta’s began Project Infinity, Goddard was a logical choice for its location. There was already a large pool of technologically capable people, and large portions of the campus were already deemed secure areas. The Project would be just one of several classified programs at Goddard. Unlike the Manhattan Project in World War II that required three main sites spread across the nation, Project Infinity research and development were conducted almost solely at Goddard, only requiring the Super-Collider in Texas to conduct a handful of tests to confirm certain experimental predictions. None of the timelines used the same location for their analogues to Infinity. The Alphas’ used their version of Area 51 in Nevada for their project Gypsy, while the Deltas used their version of the Super-Collider in Texas for Operation Reach, and the Gammas only confirmed that their Project C+ was in the Australian Outback (without explanation as to how they resourced it in such a remote area).

Foster approached the table with the wide grin that Washington thought was close to a smirk. The other Gammas were much more dour, Washington thought he preferred dour. The agent stood and shook Bill’s hand. The food came quickly and per Washington’s request a pitcher of water and pitcher of iced tea were left by the server to minimize interruptions. To Terry’s great surprise, Foster answered every almost question completely and without equivocation. There were some minor areas where Bill claimed ignorance, and Terry believed him.

Foster filled in a lot of the missing Gamma history. It was much more war torn than the Betas or Deltas imagined, and desperately in need of Beta tech and their procedures for radiological remediation. He confirmed there had been compromises in the Beta, Gamma, and Delta programs that inured to the benefit of the Alphas. The Betas had no leak per se, but Dr. Hernandez had garnered information for the Alphas temporary director of the Delta and Beta timeline’s projects “to get them up to speed.” Foster claimed it was Hernandez that had left monitoring devices and groomed useful idiots like current Project Infinity Director Hansen. When Washington pointed out that Dr. Hernandez had not filled in as Director of Operation Reach on Gamma Earth, Foster said that was just an outright lie. He went on to explain that much of the Alpha strategy was to make the Gammas the bad guys, so the Alphas could be seen as saviors. “The Gammas allow it because the Alphas contacted them first, and warned they were the only route to secure the tech needed to rebuild Gamma Earth. It turns out the last decade of war on Alpha Earth has put them in almost as bad a shape.”

Washington interrupted, “Dr. Foster – Bill -- how do we know you’re not just saying this to turn us against the Alphas and hide the Gammas’ own bad faith? For that matter, how do you even know what you say you know about the Alphas?” Harris responded, “My dear Terry, I am an Alpha." Washington thought to himself – that is definitely a smirk.

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 0635 hours EST 20 February 2041 (Beta Earth)

Special Agent Washington had been given a small windowless office in a sub-basement of the Aldrin Building on the Goddard Center Campus to prepare his report on the revelations of Dr. William “call me Bill” Foster. He had been providing regular updates, but a comprehensive report was required by the President before her upcoming video summit with her counterparts from the other timelines.

At least he was able to use a computer to prepare the document since Foster had provided the specs for a simple program to prevent what he termed “leakage.” The program was what the Alphas called an App, but on Beta Earth it was known as a B-line. The B-line worked in the background of electronic devices to prevent any unauthorized transmissions, while detecting eavesdropping attempts directed at the device and alerting the user to those attempts. Experts at Cyber Command had confirmed the B-line, dubbed Curtains, provided protection not only from eavesdropping across timelines, but made devices virtually un-hackable. It was far superior to any tech on Beta Earth and had the advantage of minimizing the need for encryption. Washington had worried that the B-line might actually be a Trojan horse that would capture all information on a device and transmit it clandestinely to the Alphas, Gammas or God knows where, but he was assured by the computer nerds that was not the case.

As Dr. Foster was a physicist, and not an engineer, Washington had been suspicious as to how he had come to have the specifications for the Curtains B-Line. Foster explained that he was given the specifications because B-Line also allowed secure communication across the timelines. Alpha representatives (including those pretending to be Gamma representatives) in each timeline had the specifications so they could in fact upload it onto Beta and Delta devices allowing Alphas to download information and monitor communications. Foster identified a half dozen Beta databases that had been compromised and stated that as Alphas coordinated their activities on Beta Earth, he was reasonably sure that his colleagues had not made other inroads. In response, the Betas had already subtly altered some key information on computers that had been used on their recent fusion breakthrough. From new questions being raised by the Alphas to the Betas it became clear that the Alphas did indeed have access they should not have had.

Washington had been instructed to put just what he had garnered from Foster in his report. The President wanted to know what Harris had said, what could be verified, what was unverified. Most importantly, was identifying anything that was demonstrably false. Washington was to leave his own opinions and impressions out of the body of the report, but the President specifically wanted those opinions contained in a separate addendum. The first draft of the report was completed, and Washington was rereading it before starting on the Addendum. He had to admit that while large portions of Bill’s story remained unverified, nothing Foster had provided had been shown to be false, or even misleading. Indeed, many important things such as the Curtains B-line not only proved true but provided more benefit to Beta Earth than anything garnered through regular exchanges between the timelines.

Terry Washington was surprised that he found himself uncomfortable sharing his thoughts and impressions regarding the would-be defector. He didn’t like Foster, but had to admit the man was smart. Terry found Foster grating and condescending while most others found Bill charming. Of course, few others knew that the friendly Dr. Foster, leader of the otherwise dour Gamma Earth representatives on Beta Earth, was actually an Alpha Earth spy. Perhaps Terry just didn’t like Bill because he had quickly figured out that Washington was a counter-intelligence agent. Foster explained that of course Terry appeared very “earnest,” but as the United States on Beta Earth had been so dominant for so long, its counter-intelligence skills were lacking as compared to Alpha Earth. “No offense,” Bill said, knowing full well that Terry would take offense.

While Bill was smart, Washington thought him reckless. For instance, Foster had taken a series of lectures given by a 20th century History Professor on Delta Earth, and a posthumously published letter of a Beta Earth Professor talking about effects of the Sino-Soviet War, and provided them to his superiors. He turned these works into useful tools to summarize the changes to the timelines, but then he turned around and published both works as alternate histories on Alpha Earth. To make matters worse he accessed the sites using the Curtains B-line (which the Alphas called the Crossover App). Washington included links to copies made and put into a Beta database.

Washington had to admit there was no reason not to proceed out of concern that Foster wasn’t telling the truth. Foster’s stated motivation was that Alpha Earth was in much worse shape than they had let on from their recent conflicts. Gamma was, if anything, worse, and he simply didn’t want to go back to either. Based on recommendations from Artificial Intelligence the Alphas had developed Project Gypsy, and created Beta and Gamma Earths. If Foster was being truthful, once the Alphas had seen time travel was possible, they proactively created the timelines. This was done in order to see if earlier nuclear conflicts could develop tech to allow the Alphas to rehabilitate their own world. The Alphas were surprised when the Beta Earth’s Project Infinity developed its own time travel capability, and inadvertently created the Delta timeline. The Beta’s Professor McCarthy really did give rise to the Delta timeline, but his Alpha analogue’s creation of the Beta and Gamma timelines being a rogue action was just an invention of the Alphas. McCarthy followed detailed instructions because the Alphas intended to create alternate timelines.

Foster was refusing to return to Alpha or Gamma Earth out of fear of not being allowed to leave again. The only way to positively confirm Foster’s revelations was to send someone to Alpha Earth. Foster indicated he could provide sufficient information to create a legend for an operative to travel secretly to Alpha Earth, along with contacts who would help, if they were promised transport to Beta Earth. Washington wrote that he was volunteering to be that operative.

The White House Oval Office - 1708 hours EST 27 February 2041 (Beta Earth)

President Townsend and a gaggle of her close advisors were discussing the just completed video summit between the United States Presidents from the four different timelines being coordinated on their Beta Earth through Project Infinity. Most summits merely formalized agreements already made by lower-level staffers, but in this case, since each version of the United States was severely limiting the access of representatives from the other timelines, there had been little staff work. Even so, the Presidents themselves did little to advance what they all saw as a minimalist agenda. Townsend felt the summit was little more than a get to know you session.

Fortunately, all the Presidents quickly agreed that beyond making a short introduction and referencing the agenda, Dr. Hernandez would not be heard from. Each of the Chief Executives would speak for themselves, albeit with frequent breaks to consult with advisors. All four Presidents were speaking from their own version of the White House. It was agreed that to start with opening statements would be made by the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta Presidents in that order. Looking at the four-square display on the screen of the situation room, Townsend couldn’t help but think it reminded her of the display on the Thirties Dating B-line her younger sister had used a few years earlier.

Townsend’s briefing book had said Alpha Earth’s President Faison was a 63-year-old who had been an Army General and then spent just two years in the Senate before being elected President the prior November. He was a widower, father and grandfather, with a daughter who had followed his example of joining the military. Faison was a light skinned black man (what the Alphas called African American). He looked fit, with close cropped slightly graying hair. Faison’s opening statement expressed hope for complete openness across the timelines, and the sharing of technology to everyone’s mutual benefit. He hoped the Alphas could help bridge any differences between the timelines and expressed disappointment in the recent restrictions placed on the Alpha timeline reps by the Betas and Deltas. When Faison had finished speaking President Townsend wrote the word focused on her notepad.

President Townsend spoke next. She wondered to herself what the others thought of her as a divorced 62-year-old mother, grandmother (who hated being described as statuesque – she actually would have preferred the term Rubenesque), and career politician with a 35-year-old Congressman son, Peter Moy, who was happily married with three daughters. Townsend had seconded the call for openness, and reminded Faison and the others that she had only ordered the escorts and restrictions on other timeline representatives to comport with what the Beta reps were experiencing.

Edward P. Keller was in his second term as the United States President on Gamma Earth. Keller was only 51 years of age. The briefing book provided no personal information on President Keller, but in his statement, Keller spoke of how he wanted success in the talks for the sake of all the Earths, including his wife and children. Keller was a slightly overweight white man with a shock of salt and pepper hair. President Townsend realized he had just spoken in platitudes, and if asked to describe Keller in one word she would say vacuous.

United States President Margaret Redpath of Delta Earth was a 57-year-old mixed race woman also in her second term. The briefing book stated she was happily married to a hotel entrepreneur, and they had three adult children with seven grandchildren. Redpath said she too wanted openness and said it could start with the Alphas and the Gammas giving the same free rein to all representatives that the Betas and Deltas had originally allowed. She pointed out how the Deltas had shared their battery technology and didn’t want to speak in code – she very much wanted Delta access to the Alphas’ AI tech, the Betas’ fusion breakthrough, “and whatever the hell it is the Gammas are hiding.” Patricia Townsend took an immediate liking to her counterpart, who she would later describe as a dynamic woman. Townsend wrote a note to see if aides could set up a meeting with just the two women.

They were just about to get into the specifics of the summit when the president’s secretary announced that Vice Admiral Callahan had arrived. The president asked CIA Director Li to remain in the room but directed the others to take dinner and return in an hour. Admiral Callahan entered, and nodded to Director Li as the President motioned her to sit.

Callahan began – “Madame President, we had complete success. Using the summit signals to cover transport, we were able to insert two person teams into each of the other timelines, and they were successfully retrieved shortly before the technicians shut the signal down following your summit. Shall I begin my brief?”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 1254 hours EST 21 March 2041 (Beta Earth)

Terry Washington leaned over and kissed his wife Adele goodbye, pulling a suitcase and garment bag off the backseat as he exited the car. If all went as planned, he would be back with his family in about a month. Special Agent Washington was beginning the most important assignment of his FBI career. Washington was going to visit Alpha Earth to gather intelligence. Most of the next month would be consumed by training, simulations, and learning the legend that, with the help of Bill Foster, they were developing for Washington to infiltrate Alpha Earth for three to five days. Not being able to say anything to Adele about his mission felt wrong, but at least telling her he had an assignment that required leaving town for a while wasn’t a lie. He had been able to give her a telephone number to call in case of emergency but emphasized that depending on when she called it might take days for him to answer.

Terry had volunteered to go to Alpha Earth just over one month prior, but his was not to be the first secret insertion. During the President’s February 27th video summit with the United States Presidents from the competing timelines, there had been clandestine transports of two person teams to each of the other three timelines. The summit itself had been used to facilitate these short-term insertions. Washington was picked for this longer one-man mission to Alpha Earth. He was now going over the summaries of what those teams brought back.

Since all four Presidents on the 27th were to be speaking from their own version of the White House it was decided that the window opened for communication could be used to mask the transport of the teams somewhere in the general area of Washington City (or in the case of Alpha Earth Washington, D.C.). The missions were necessarily short term as the communications window would be closed within an hour of the conclusion of the Presidential summit.

The first suggestion to send the teams to the Library of Congress was rejected due to the locale being too high profile. It was decided that since the Public Library at Takoma Park was opened on Beta Earth in 1911, the transport windows could be focused at that locale as it was deemed there was a good chance that it was a library on one or more of the other Earth’s as well. A library was thought to be the best location for quickly gathering the basic background material the Beta government sought.

From his prior briefing Washington knew that, whether traveling back in time or to another timeline, once a lock was established before anyone actually steps through a transport window the Project Infinity teams would actually look through the window to see what was on the other side. The pre-insertion window is extremely small, and all four timelines referred to it as a peephole at that point. The peephole can also be moved around up to about 80 meters from where it first appears. This allows for observations to make sure those being transported were not walking into something dangerous like a fire, but just as important for clandestine transports it assured there is no one on the other side who would note their arrival.

In the case of the summit transports Project Infinity hit three cherries on their slot machine. There was indeed a public library at each of Takoma Parks, and in each case the team was able to locate unobtrusive insertion points within a few minutes of establishing a window. Each of the teams were given ready access to the library computers and books. Since each timeline had different interfaces, software, and hardware for their electronic devices, the teams were equipped with adaptors. The adaptors had been developed to allow representatives of the various Earths access to each other’s systems during official exchanges. They also had identification documents that they hoped would work, but fortunately hadn’t had to show them.

In each case one member of the team was to act as a lookout while the other did research, but this soon proved to be an unnecessary precaution. Aside from asking whether they had library cards on Gamma Earth, no one was asked for any identification. In all cases the library staff were extremely helpful, with the librarian on Gamma Earth giving the team a temporary access code, with the only caveat being that they couldn’t take any books or media out of the building without a permanent card. Billie Huong on the Delta mission reported with a smile that her partner Ed Rodgers must have really looked nervous, because the librarian twice looked at his activity warning he “better not be accessing pornography.” Fortunately, the material they were downloading and hard reference material they were viewing applied only to post-1900 history and current affairs. Their mission in essence was to see whether the historical information given to the Betas from the other timelines was correct. Even though the other operatives weren’t aware of Bill Foster’s defection, their findings would be used to judge his reliability as well.

The Delta history matched up pretty well with what the Deltas had provided the other timelines. The Gamma team’s report filled in many of the gaps the Betas had in the Gamma history. One interesting point on the Gammas was that while they were extremely reluctant to open up to the Beta official reps, there appeared to be absolutely no censorship in what they allowed the public to know about their history, current affairs, and international relations. There were plans to train an operative to go to the Gamma Earth at some point after Terry’s mission.

The Alphas were a different story. The historical information they had provided was accurate up to the early 2010s. They had failed to mention three very contentious Presidential elections from 2016 to 2024 and two major pandemics that lasted from 2019 to 2021 and 2035 to 2037 respectively. The Alphas had previously mentioned conflicts from the 2020s through most of the 2030s, but it was obvious from the team’s reports that the conflicts were much more destructive than the Alphas had let on to the other timelines. All this seemed to confirm Dr. Foster’s debriefs. The junior member of the Alpha team was told he would not be traveling to another timeline again after he devoted a full page in his report to the fact that a television show called Star Trek that he had discovered decades after it had been canceled on Beta Earth in 1969 had spawned numerous spin-offs, films, books and computer games on Alpha Earth. All three teams were extracted without incident before the summit window had closed.

Terry was pleased when informed that he had been chosen for this mission but was a little surprised. He remarked to Vice Admiral Callahan that he was happy to have been chosen but had expected a CIA or DIA agent would have been picked. Washington was still happy to be going but felt some concern when Callahan informed him that he was picked at “your buddy Bill’s insistence, and since he is the primary source being used to create your legend, we complied.”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 1845 hours EST 4 April 2041 (Beta Earth)

FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington of Beta Earth was slowly turning himself into Alpha Earth’s Terry Watkins, a construction worker on medical disability for a bad back. Terry was somewhat disappointed at having no contact with his family during his acclimation period, but realized it was necessary to start feeling like an Alpha Earth resident if he was going to be able to function in that timeline without drawing unwanted attention. Most of his days were spent studying material from Alpha Earth. Fortunately, the Alpha reps had shared considerable information on music, sports and other culture. Terry was disappointed that his favorite Washington Senators were the Texas Rangers in the Alpha timeline and couldn’t quite figure why the Redskins were now called the Commanders. He spent a fair amount of time trying to pick out Alpha music that met his tastes, and decided to make use of the extensive information provided on Star Trek from the February insertion to tell people if asked that he was a “Trekkie.”

Given Terry’s mission prep Dr. Foster had been given new escorts, but Terry still saw Bill almost daily. They met mostly at dinner, as they were on this evening. At prior meetings Foster would quiz Terry on his legend and provide helpful hints. For instance, when Bill asked Terry his ethnicity, and the response was Black, Foster explained that the preferred term on Alpha Earth was African American. Likewise, he explained that American Indians were Native Americans, and Orientals were Asians. When Terry pointed out that Asian was also the preferred term on Beta Earth, Foster apologized explaining he had for a moment confused terms from the Beta and Gamma timelines. It was for this very reason that Terry was now being intentionally left out of any briefings on revelations from the Gamma and Delta timelines and was even avoiding news on the Beta timeline.

Terry caught on that the topic on this evening was again going to be the Alpha timeline’s “wokeness.” In the prior two decades, Alpha Earth’s United States had evidently had wild swings in the concept wherein people asserted rights based on both individual and group victimhood, and in certain instances anti-woke advocates chose to ignore almost any injustice. Some people deemed to have acted improperly were “canceled,” in that they were essentially shunned by society. Despite reactionary anti-woke challenges, by the mid-2030s the country was firmly in the woke camp. Foster had been careful not to take a position on whether wokeness was good or bad overall, but Terry got the impression that Foster was more anti-woke when the good Doctor referenced comparisons to the Cultural Revolution in China that preceded the Sino-Soviet War on Beta Earth.

Bill then asked how Terry’s other preparations were going. Terry explained that in the morning he had used one of the virtual reality rooms to simulate the transport. Bill assured him the simulations were quite close to the real thing in that the peephole opened just wide enough to locate a safe exit point, and then, as that point expanded, the person being transported just walked into the other timeline like entering another room. The simulation’s wave of cold air on entering, followed by a general feeling of warmth on exiting, was spot on according to Foster. He then reminded Terry to concentrate on return simulations, as with his tracker Terry might or might not have warning before the Betas extracted him.

The two also went over the electronic devices, and documentation Terry would be taking with him. Foster assured Terry that everything would pass as being Alpha in origin, as long as he wasn’t detained by the Alpha government for some reason. It had been previously decided to send Terry with $8,000 in pre-1975 currency, which was identical in both timelines, and still accepted as legal tender. He could then use some cash and convert the rest into an Alpha debit card (the Betas using the term dcc for debit/credit card). Bill indicated he had been told that there was going to be an event in about a week that should be used to mask Terry’s insertion into the Alpha timeline. It was a minor annoyance to Terry that Bill seemed to know more of his mission then he did, but he was getting used to that.

As they were finishing dessert Terry confessed that he had at first not really liked Bill, but his helpfulness had changed Terry’s mind. Bill had previously explained that he had found Terry to be so competent and focused that he had conditioned his continued cooperation on Terry being the asset to infiltrate Alpha Earth. Bill had also previously been steadfast in maintaining he would not voluntarily leave Beta Earth, so Terry was shocked when, as he walked away after they shook hands at the end of the meal, Bill said, “by the way I’ll be going with you.”

Camp David Presidential Retreat Maryland, USA 1030 hours EST 6 April 2041 (Beta Earth)

The President was seated at the head of a long table flanked by various military and civilian advisors as they discussed whether to give a go order for a clandestine insertion of FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington into the Alpha timeline. It had been almost four months since then President-Elect Townsend had first learned of the existence of Project Infinity at a cabin just a stone’s throw from this building. At that time Townsend was briefed by just the former Secretary of Energy, the Director of Project Infinity, and Space Corps Admiral Jim Roberts of Cyber Command. Admiral Roberts was the only one of those briefers present today. In the normal course the President now had Janice Milner as her own Secretary of Energy. Dr. Hernandez, the prior Director of Infinity, had returned to her home on Alpha Earth.

Townsend had not seen any justification for having a Director of Project Infinity coming from another timeline and had been happy to see that Hernandez had been replaced before Inauguration Day. Still, the President was not impressed with her replacement, Dr. William Hansen. Based on concerns expressed after her initial briefing, security had been considerably tightened on the Project and on the representatives sent to Beta Earth by the other timelines. This had led to the possible defection of Dr. William Foster, the leading representative from Gamma Earth, who, just to keep it complicated, said he was actually from Alpha Earth.

As Foster had identified Dr. Hansen as a “useful idiot” who had been far too trusting of Dr. Hernandez and the other Alphas, it had been decided to exclude Hansen from today’s deliberations. Dr. Hansen technically had not been replaced out of concern that doing so would alert the other timelines, but he had been effectively isolated. Even with Hansen being absent, the President counted a dozen people besides herself in the room, not to mention the aides, Secret Service, Marine Guards, and other staff just on the grounds today who had some idea about what Project Infinity entailed.

Townsend had tried to increase security on the project, but with the exponential increase in the number of people involved, it was only a matter of time before a leak occurred. She wondered to herself if her three counterparts in the other timelines faced similar concerns.

The formal announcement of the recent breakthrough in fusion technology, which was projected to be able to provide almost limitless clean energy, was scheduled for the coming week. The breakeven point in fusion energy had actually occurred in 2021, but the government-business partnership had taken another two decades to develop a safe, commercially viable plant design. It was projected almost all current nuclear plants could be converted in the matter of just two years with new smaller facilities quickly coming online in parallel.

It was hoped that any questions about secret projects could be deflected by obtuse answers letting those inquiring think the secrecy that was surrounding Project Infinity was actually relating to the fusion breakthrough. The President didn’t like being deceptive with the American people, but secrecy was needed, and that story certainly beat the suggestion to use UFOs as a cover.

In any event, the topic at bar was whether she was going to give the go ahead for a several days long insertion of a Beta operative on Alpha Earth. There had been a prior insertion of two-man teams into the other three timelines, but that had been for a matter of hours, and involved only gathering basic open-source material from a local library in each timeline. The material gathered from Alpha and Gamma Earths provided some proof that their reps to Beta had been misleading, and in some cases downright dishonest. They seemed to confirm information being provided by Dr. Foster. The question now was whether any information their agent could retrieve would be worth the risk if he was compromised.

The DIA Director, Vice Admiral Callahan, was summing up on her view of Foster, and whether he could be trusted. She indicated that Foster had been found wholly credible, but there were still concerns about his mercurial nature. For instance, while on defecting the physicist almost immediately acknowledged he was actually from Alpha and not Gamma Earth, he had only recently revealed his was really Philip Harris from Wisconsin and not William Foster from Alberta. When asked about the delay he had merely stated it was irrelevant, that he had actually, with the consent of the real Foster, assumed his identity prior to traveling to Beta Earth, and by the way they should still just call him Bill.

Bill had shocked the Betas when it was decided to do rotations between timelines of some of the representatives on April 11th when he immediately agreed to return to the Gamma timeline. This was surprising because Bill had previously been adamant about not leaving Beta Earth out of fear that he would not be allowed back. When asked about his change of heart, Bill stated that as it was a routine rotation, he felt safe, and was confident he would be rotated back. Callahan then outlined how their defector went on to suggest that the rotations could be used to mask Agent Washington’s insertion to Alpha, and as he believed he himself would return to the Alpha timeline shortly after transporting to Gamma, their defector would be available to assist Washington.

The Admiral concluded: “In short, I don’t know if this defector can be trusted, but everything he has said has checked out, and the rotations would be optimal for our agent’s insertion. The only thing that makes me feel better about Bill is that he demanded before he leaves, we deposit $10,000,000.00 in an account under the identity we have agreed to provide him here. That gives some indication he is planning to come back.”

President Townsend scanned the room. She asked if anyone else had input. No one responded, and she remembered her father, who in the Alpha timeline had died in Vietnam before ever meeting her mother. Whenever she had tried to get him to tell her what she should do in her political life he would give general advice, but always ended it with saying, “Patricia, in the end you have to be the one to make the really hard choices.” The President ended the session with a short, direct command “We’re a go.”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 0545 hours EST 11 April 2041 (Beta Earth)

FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington was alone watching a closed-circuit feed of the transfer of the replacement Alpha representatives arriving on Beta Earth. Terry was finally becoming comfortable with his Terry Watkins Alpha Earth cover. It had been decided that on this date all the timelines would transfer in new four person teams to replace the three person teams that were rotating back to their own timelines. The new personnel would come in and have a day to get acclimated before the people they were replacing returned to their own timelines.

Once the Alpha reps, their equipment, and baggage were transferred there was a twenty-to-thirty-minute download of data from the Alphas to the Betas. Shortly after the window from Alpha Earth was closed, the Betas would open a window to Gamma Earth and send their replacement reps there; and Gamma would repeat the process by sending their reps to the Delta timeline. After the Deltas had sent their reps to Alpha Earth, the Alphas would open a new window to Gamma Earth, and the Betas would send reps to Delta Earth with the Gamma reps going to Alpha, and the Delta timeline then transporting their Beta representatives. The final round would be Alpha to Delta, Beta to Alpha, Gamma to Beta, and Delta to Gamma. Given the calibrations required, all told the process would take almost seven hours.

The whole thing would be repeated tomorrow in reverse order with the old representatives being returned to their own timelines. The plan was for Terry to be transferred after tomorrow's download to the Alphas was complete (but before the window closed). Dr. Bill Foster had been credentialed as the lead representative to Beta Earth from the Gammas but was actually an Alpha who wanted to defect to the Beta timeline. He had assured the Betas that if they sent him to Gamma Earth today with the new Beta representatives to that timeline that the Gammas would let him return to Alpha Earth with their new reps, giving him time to prepare to meet Terry when he was transported to Alpha Earth the next day.

Sure, enough at about 7:30 AM Terry watched Bill Foster glad hand a couple of the technicians, and Dr. Hansen, the titular Project Infinity Director, and walk through the expanded peephole back to the Gamma timeline. Hansen and the others believed that Dr. Foster was being transported a day early to take care of an unspecified personal issue. Terry had gone from not liking Foster at all, to be almost completely won over based on the man’s assistance in prepping him for this mission. Washington had backtracked a bit based on Bill’s almost neck breaking ability to change direction. Bill had gone from being adamant that he would not return to Alpha or Gamma Earth, to not only agreeing to return, but offering to act in essence as Terry’s handler.

Terry’s superiors shared his concerns about Foster (whose real name was Philip Harris). They were concerned about Foster’s trustworthiness and mercurial nature, and offered to cancel or delay the mission, but they also made clear that once Dr. Foster left Beta Earth they were committed to follow through. They would assume Foster would be able to get to Alpha Earth a day ahead of Washington. The Alpha site for their Project Gypsy was in their Area 51 in the Nevada dessert. In the previous decade the Alpha government had built up the town of Rachel, Nevada to make for less of a commute for the large staff supporting Project Gypsy. Washington would be transferred to coordinates that matched up with Bill’s backyard. Terry couldn’t help but smile when he asked what to do if Bill didn’t show up immediately and Bill handed him a six-character code to open the door and said, "Leave me at least a couple of Coronas."

One of the reasons the transfer was being made at this point was that they were approaching Easter. Bill had assured the Betas that this meant there would be somewhat less stringent security around Project Gypsy. Further, many of those who were manning Gypsy would be preoccupied with analyzing everything available on the just announced Beta fusion breakthrough.

Terry hoped Bill was right, because come tomorrow he would also be going to another Earth.

Project C+ Transport Center, Australian Northern Territory Approximately 100 Kilometers Northeast of Alice Springs 2202 hours ACST 11 April 2041 (Gamma Earth)

Dr. William Foster stepped into the reception area with the other individuals who had just been transported and was once again Dr. Philip Harris. The real Dr. Foster, who was now using a name that Harris simply could not recall quickly approached him with an outstretched hand and said “Doctor, we got the message that you were in this sortie just as this window was opening. We weren’t expecting you until tomorrow. Is something amiss?” Harris whispered that everything was alright, but they should speak in the Director’s office outside the earshot of the arriving Betas.

Once in the office Foster was saved embarrassment when he saw from the nameplate on his desk that the Project C+ Director had adopted the name William French. Given the fact that Harris had used the name Foster in dealing with some of the just arrived Beta Representatives the real Dr. Foster would have to continue using the pseudonym for a while longer. Harris actually liked the real Dr. Foster, who was so anxious to overcome the Gamma reputation for being taciturn that he insisted to anyone addressing him as Doctor or Director that they just call him Bill. In fact, when using the name William Foster, Harris had adopted the same habit.

On taking their seats Foster/French again asked Dr. Harris if there was a problem. Harris responded, “Please call me Phil,” and they both laughed. Harris explained that he was just anxious to get back to Alpha Earth and was hoping the Director could arrange for him to go on the sortie to the Deltas, so he could then take their sortie to Alpha Earth. The Director confirmed their sortie to the Deltas would leave in just over a half hour, and expressed concern that Harris would not be available for a full debrief. Harris then handed over a device the Gammas called a portable memory with assurances that it was a comprehensive record of his stay on Beta Earth. He also gave assurances that the other two representatives returning to Gamma the next day could answer any questions, and if the Gammas felt it necessary, he was sure that the Alphas would let him return to answer questions.

Were it not for the unspoken, but very real inequality in the partnership the Gammas had formed with the Alphas, the Director would have denied the request, but they both knew it was really more a direction than a request. The Director called down to the control center and asked them to inform the Deltas that Harris would be coming through with the new Gamma reps and was requesting transport to Alpha Earth with their representatives.

Finally, the Director asked if Harris had pursued with the Betas whether they were interested in the offer to provide them with thylacines to repopulate their Tasmania. Harris had almost forgotten about that tasking. Fortunately, he had broached the subject early in his just completed tour. He explained to the Director that the Betas were very interested but were hesitant to trade technology for the animals. There was the added complication that in the timelines outside Gamma Earth, Tasmania and the other Australian states were in one form or the other closely allied with, but were not actually part of, the United States. If they did accept the animals, the Betas would likely claim there was a small colony rediscovered in the wild rather than try to explain their arrival from another timeline. The Director smiled and stated that the Deltas had already agreed to an exchange of animals to increase the genetic diversity in each timeline. Harris also promised to raise the issue with the Alphas but didn’t expect them to make it a high priority.

The control center indicated that the Deltas had agreed Dr. Harris could accompany the new Gamma representatives. Harris proceeded back down, picked up his bag and prepared to enter his third world in as many hours.

Operation Reach Headquarters Facility, Waxahachie, Texas 0937 hours CST 11 April 2041 (Delta Earth)

Phillip Harris stepped through the still expanding window from Gamma Earth and had to catch himself as there was a stairway leading down from the edge of the platform he had stepped onto. He silently wondered if this was done as a conscious choice of the Deltas to literally put other timeline visitors off balance on arrival. This was his first visit to Delta Earth. Harris was surprised at how bright the facility was and noted that unlike the utilitarian furnishings in the other timeline control centers, this facility had plush furnishings and some very nice artwork adorning the walls. There was a large bay window opposite the transport platform that looked out on a field of wildflowers, at least Harris thought it was a window, until the scene changed to a placid lake. The VR was at least equal to what they had on Alpha Earth, and even approached the quality Harris had observed on Beta Earth. Perhaps they were giving this to the Gammas in exchange for the Tasmanian Tigers.

An attractive, if slightly overweight, blonde woman who Philip estimated to be in her early thirties addressed him as he reached the bottom of the staircase. “Dr. Harris?” Harris responded, “Please call me Philip, and you are?” Without cracking a smile she responded, “I’m the woman you made a shitload of work for by coming on this sortie with less than ten minutes notice.” Harris apologized, and offered his rehearsed response that he had just learned that his fiancé was ill, so he was just attempting to get home as quickly as possible.

This time the blonde did give a small smile. She asked for his Data Card. The card was basically just a computer chip that served as a combination identification/timeline passport and credentials for inter-timeline travelers. Harris had given the Gamma Project C+ Director the Data Card he had used while on Beta Earth as Bill Foster and retrieved his own from when he first arrived on Gamma some months ago. To the Deltas it would appear that Harris had been on the Gamma timeline the whole time.

The blonde, who still hadn’t given her name, put the card in a portable reader. She then turned to Harris, and remarked, “It all seems in order, but you’re only credentialed to the Gammas. I’m afraid we’ll have to do a search of your person and baggage. We’ll do it as quickly as possible to allow you to be on our sortie to the Alphas. Do you have any electronic devices?” Harris responded that he had left those with colleagues, so as to minimize delays in transit. He was silently grateful that he had left the portable memory he had carried with the Gammas, instead of trying to take it through to the Alpha timeline.

The young woman now gave a much bigger smile and said, “The name is Irene, by the way. If you’ll accompany Carl, who is coming up behind you now, I’ll look through your bag, and, barring anything unexpected, you’ll be on your way in about 40 minutes.” Carl walked him to an elevator and took it two levels up (much of the facility was evidently underground). They then walked through a door to a workout center. Carl took him to a changing area and asked him to disrobe down to his underwear. When asked about prosthetic devices Harris responded that he had none. Carl then used a portable detector to determine if Harris had any metal or electronics. After going through Harris’ clothing Carl took him to a small break room on the same level as the control center. Philip was halfway through a can of Diet Moxie when Irene called Carl to bring Harris back. Irene handed Harris back his bag and Data Card and told him the sortie to Alpha Earth would be leaving shortly. When she apologized for any discomfort, Phil responded that he was just glad to have avoided an actual body cavity search. Irene actually laughed as she said, “Well I told Carl you were engaged.”

As he climbed back up the platform, Harris thought to himself that having a fiancé had given him the idea to use her as an excuse to speed up his travel, but it also complicated his relationship with the Betas. Yeah, he should have told them about her -- oh well.

Project Gypsy Control Center, Area 51 Restricted Military Reservation, Nevada 0913 hours PST 11 April 2041 (Alpha Earth)

At first glance Harris decided that little seemed to have changed since he last left what the staff here called the bunker. He had actually done the grand tour of all four timelines in just a few hours. He would have to ask how many others had visited all four timelines. Perhaps he was the first to do them all in a day. Too bad they couldn't publish his record.

As he exited the window from Delta Earth, Philip recognized the young Air Force Staff Sergeant manning the closest console. He was able to recall the man’s first name and asked, “Rodney, where is my best girl?” Rodney said he didn’t know, when the always serious Space Force Captain Margaret Gottlieb, who was on the console next to Rodney, responded, “Since you weren’t due until tomorrow, she took the day off to get your place in order.” When Harris protested that the place would only need a dusting, the Captain indicated there was a pool on whether Harris had even made his bed before leaving, and that his “best girl” had told them she personally believed she would find milk and other perishables still in his refrigerator. Dr. Harris gave a curt no comment. The young Sergeant then pipped in that General Shea wanted to see him on the double.

Harris said, “All in good time,” and asked to borrow a phone when Captain Gottlieb turned from her console while pointing to two Marine guards approaching to escort him. Not for the first time Harris thought the Alphas were much more militarized than the other timelines. He smiled at the two guards and motioned them to lead onto the good General.

Brigadier General Patrick Shea was a career Army intelligence officer, who firmly believed his main qualification for his current position was being able to perform intelligence and counter-intelligence functions for Project Gypsy while putting up with all the bullshit created by assholes like Dr. Philip Harris. He was just 5'8", built like a fireplug, but definitely solid with close-cut red hair. The Marine guards delivered the good Doctor to Shea’s office and quickly withdrew. Harris offered the General something between a wave and a salute. Shea said, “Philip, please don’t try to adopt military courtesies with me. You’ll almost inevitably get them wrong, and I might get the mistaken impression you’re trying to mock me.”

The General motioned Harris to take a seat, and asked why he was back a day early. Harris explained he just wanted to show the Betas that he had some pull, to help with recruitment. Shea was becoming quite angry but trying very hard not to show it. “Doctor, you were on a covert mission to identify possible intelligence resources on Beta Earth. You were set up with a cover as being from the Gammas in case you were discovered so it would not cause problems here on Alpha Earth. By seeking anything special, you drew attention to yourself. That is the last thing any intelligence agent should want. Once more, the Deltas now know you as you, so you can never be an asset there, not to mention if the Betas and Deltas compare notes you’re blown.”

Harris got defensive pointing out he was a physicist, not a secret agent. Shea lost his temper, stating, “If you were really a good physicist you would be working here, but we can agree that at intelligence you’re a dangerous amateur.” They each sat in silence for a few moments when the General apologized and added, “Philip, the truth is we needed a good physicist, because there is no way a non-scientist could do this job, but you have to stop freelancing. Now, what about identifying potential assets, and do you have a report for me? Also, what can you tell us about the Beta Fusion breakthrough?”

Philip explained he had identified four possible assets. Two were scientists on Project Infinity, one was a data entry clerk, and the last was an FBI agent who had been his escort the last few weeks. As to the fusion breakthrough, there was a public announcement just before he was leaving Beta Earth. Finally, he had not used the flash drive he had been given as the Betas had greatly increased security, but he could brief as required.

Shea let out a breath. "Well, I suspect the clerk may be the most useful of the assets, especially if he or she has an equivalent to our Top-Secret Clearance. The FBI agent might be playing with you – be careful when you go back. Write a comprehensive report and we’ll go over in detail how you should proceed before you return. Frankly, the Beta announcement about the fusion breakthrough was just one more reason not to rush your return. Can you get me the report by this afternoon?" Harris asked if it could wait a couple of days while he went home. The General then said – “Doctor, you are here under quarantine, and incommunicado with the outside world for 24 hours. That is not just you. It is a new security protocol for anyone returning from another timeline. So just relax a couple of hours, then get on a secure computer without any network connections and get me that report before those 24 hours are up. Tell my secretary to set you up with on-site secure quarters. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

As he left the room Philip recalled how, before his return, the Betas had said many of the same things about his travels that Shea had just covered. They had just wanted him to go on a normal rotation and avoid attracting attention. His mother was right – by insisting on trying to prove he was the smartest person in the room he often only established he was the biggest asshole. There was no way that he was going to be home before Terry Washington, aka Terry Watkins, arrived.

Sand Spring Estates - Rachel, Nevada 1004 hours PST 12 April 2041 (Alpha Earth)

Terrence Washington felt the expected rush of cold air as he entered the window from Beta Earth, and just as in the simulations it was quickly replaced by a feeling of warmth all over as he stepped onto solid ground as Terry Watson on Alpha Earth. He knew it was all real but wouldn’t be totally shocked if someone tapped him on the shoulder and told him it was all just an elaborate VR prank, like he had seen on Believe It or Not.

The peephole had originally opened up inside the home of Dr. Philip Harris. Even though it appeared that no one was at home, Terry had been transported to the backyard, as Harris wasn’t sure if his alarm system would go off if someone was moving around without disarming it at entry. Terry took a minute to look around. The landscaping around the whole house was typical of Southwestern designs on Beta Earth. That meant no grass, a lot of decorative stone and some cactus. The yard was fenced in, but there was no lock on the gate. On Beta Earth there would be a pool, but per Harris the clean water shortage on this world was such that no new construction included pools. The yard had a small tool shed and a greenhouse. There was a garage attached to the house, with a sleek Electric Blue vehicle with SONATA written along the hatch to the trunk.

Harris had briefed him on the dwelling. It was a two bedroom, two bath ranch house with built in solar panels. Terry thought that the solar panels and greenhouse weren’t getting much sun today, as it was very overcast and much cooler than he would have expected for the Nevada desert mid-morning in April. Of course, the team that had downloaded information on recent Alpha history last February had provided data to show that, thanks to the last decade of war, overcast without much rain was typical on most days throughout the globe in the Alpha timeline. In fact, he noticed that one side of the greenhouse had what were likely high intensity lights built into the ceiling to be employed when there was no sunlight.

Harris had outlined that the housing development was only about five years old, and that he had been the first to occupy his home since he purchased it four years prior. On Beta Earth the Rachel, Nevada population was less than one hundred people, living mostly in mobile homes. That had been the case in the Alpha timeline as well, but with the greatly expanded research on various projects to support the war effort the population in just the last decade had swelled to over 20,000 and was still growing. Given the expansion, it was decided giving Terry an identity as a construction worker recovering from a bad back would be an optimal cover.

Terry went through the gate from the yard and approached the front door. He considered just punching in the code that Harris had given him, but in case a neighbor was watching he rang the bell. To his great surprise a female voice answered, “Yes, can I help you?” Son of a bitch! Terry hesitated for just a half a second before saying, “I might have the wrong house. I’m looking for Dr. Harris.” The voice came back again, “Is this Terry? Philip got stuck at work, I’m his fiancé. I’m already on my way, and will be there in less than ten minutes to let you in.” Terry confirmed his identity, and said he would wait. The bastard had lied – he finally caught him in a lie, but it was after the asshole had gotten a Beta agent here.

A quick check of his retrieval device showed Terry that the window had closed, and calling for return with the window closed would likely alert the Alphas. He took a seat on the porch swing and went over the cover story in his mind again. He had known Harris when they were both kids in Madison, Wisconsin. They saw each other last October when Philip returned to Madison for his mother’s funeral. Philip had told him then that if Terry’s back got better there was plenty of construction work in Rachel and Philip would put him up until he found a place.

As promised, the fiancé pulled into the driveway just a few minutes later. She was driving a white vehicle the Alphas called a suburban. She was an attractive Hispanic woman (Terry wondered to himself if the Alphas say Latina), dressed in jeans with what he would call a peasant blouse. As she came closer and extended a hand Terry hoped his jaw didn’t drop as she said, “I’m Maria, I’m sorry Philip wasn’t here to greet you, but he’s always promising to do things without thinking them through. Let’s get inside.”

Terry returned the handshake, and responded, “Don’t I know it.” He recognized her from his preparation for this mission, and simply couldn’t believe it. Not only did Harris have a fiancé, despite clearly telling the Betas that he had no ties to keep him from leaving the Alphas, but that fiancé was none other than Dr. Maria Hernandez, who Harris had made out to be the chief agent the Alphas used to undermine the other timelines.

Maria Hernandez punched in the access code and swung open the front door. Terry followed her into the house, and Hernandez told him to hang up his coat and proceeded to show him the guest bedroom where he could unpack his bag. Terry started to say that he could find a motel and take an Uber (grateful he remembered the Alpha term for a car service), but Maria would have none of it.

Hernandez explained that she actually hadn’t expected Philip until tomorrow, but he returned from his work trip a day early only to get stuck when he stopped at work on the way home. “You may even have been at Reid Airport at the same time, but he didn’t have his personal cell with him. In any event, he called me when I was on the way to pick him up at work and asked that I turn around in case you had arrived early. For once Philip’s instincts were right. I had literally just turned around when you rang the bell. He is getting another ride and should be here soon.” She told Terry to relax on the sofa while she got them some coffee.

Terry smiled. Of course, he knew she was lying just to cover up their work at Project Gypsy. He just hoped she hadn’t ascertained he was also lying. He left his bag on the bed and started into the living area. The room he had been given was Spartan, but it had a queen-sized bed, small dresser, a nightstand with a lamp, spacious closet, and a large window with blinds, but no curtains. Like the rest of the house the room was immaculate. There was a bathroom across the hallway. The door to the other bedroom was closed, and Terry presumed it to be the main bedroom with an attached bath. The house had central heat and air, and Terry found the temperature quite comfortable.

The living area was huge. Behind the couch and other furniture was a large bay window with curtains and raised blinds. On the coffee table were two small piles of envelopes, and a small garbage pail where he presumed Dr. Hernandez had been sorting Bill’s (make that Phil’s) mail. A home entertainment system, including what Terry thought was a 3D projector, took up most of the wall facing the sofa and love seat. There was a table with four chairs off the kitchen. Terry could hear Maria in the kitchen, but his view of that room was partially obstructed, as you had to make a half turn to enter that room.

Maria called in asking how Terry wanted his coffee, and he responded black was fine. She walked into the room carrying two large mugs. Maria said she was glad Terry wasn’t a coffee snob like Philip, who refused to drink anything but Starbucks latte mochas. Terry just smiled. Maria asked if he wanted her to put something on the entertainment center, and he said that was okay. He immediately regretted that when she said, “Good, what dirt can you give me on Philip when he was a kid?” Terry suddenly wished that he had just asked her to put on some music or news. He tried to limit his exposure by saying that he was a few years younger than Phil, and it was really their moms who were close.

He hoped to God that Phil hadn’t lied when he helped him create his legend as he said, “I hadn’t actually seen Phil for years before he came back to Madison for his mom’s funeral last year.” He was relieved when Maria responded that she was so sad she never met Philip’s mother and was unable to attend the funeral. They had only gotten engaged shortly after his return. Terry asked if she lived with Phil, and she laughed, explaining, “Philip is a man-child. This place was a pig sty before I came in yesterday to clean it up. I had promised myself that other than picking up his mail once a week I wouldn’t do anything to clean up his mess, but when his return got close, I couldn’t help it. I just don’t want to be picking up after him every day until we’re actually married.” She then asked if Terry knew Philip’s first wife, to which he responded no while again silently cursing Harris. Terry was glad that Maria didn’t ask him about his own background, as he’d had only a short time to memorize his full legend.

They continued to chat. Terry asked if she worked with Phil, and she explained she was actually his boss. Mercifully they finally saw through the window that Harris had been dropped off and was coming up the walk. Maria shouted out that the door was unlocked, and they both stood as Harris walked in. Philip dropped his bag, grabbed Maria around her waist and kissed her. He then asked. “How’s my best girl?” Without waiting for an answer, he walked over to Terry and gave him a bear hug, while apologizing for the delay.

Harris then asked how they were getting along. Terry just nodded, and Maria responded, “Tell me, Philip, is Terry a Beta or a Gamma? I’m betting Beta.”

The man who had identified himself as Terry Watkins tried to go on the offensive. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Phil made out that he was involved in some super-secret stuff which I don’t care about. I was just looking for a job. If you two have issues, I’ll just be on my way.” Terry looked to Harris for backup, but the man looked beaten. Harris asked Maria if he could explain when she stopped him by holding her hand up and turned toward Terry.

She was visibly angry, but took a breath and addressed Terry directly:
Mr. Watkins let’s start over. I am Dr. Maria Hernandez, Director of Project Gypsy. I strongly suspect you already knew that. I also suspect your name is not Terry Watkins, and that you are here now because my fiancé far exceeded his mandate on his recent mission and got you to come here. If I’m incorrect just tell me and we’ll do a quick background check to confirm your identity, pay you for your inconvenience and send you on your way after you sign an NDA. We may even be able to get you a job if you can pass a security clearance. If I’m correct and you tell me now, I’ll do my best to quickly get you back where you belong. However, if I’m right, but am forced to involve our security people, I can’t say what will happen.

Just then Harris took the decision on how to proceed out of Terry’s hands. Starting with, “Terry’s real name is Terrence Washington. He’s the FBI agent they assigned to be my escort after you left the Beta timeline.” Phil went on hardly taking a breath for almost five minutes outlining what he had done, even including his getting the Betas to promise him $10,000,000. Terry actually thought Phil was going to cry, and when he started to hyperventilate Dr. Hernandez got a paper bag from the kitchen while Terry walked him to the table outside the kitchen. Breathing into the bag helped Phil regain his composure.

When they were all seated around the table, Dr. Hernandez asked Philip to be quiet while she spoke to Terry. “So, I’m just going to call you Terry. Do you want to contradict anything Philip said?” Terry just shook his head no, and let Hernandez continue. “Don’t beat yourself up. You’re only mistake was calling Philip ‘Phil,’ as except for joking when he assumed his ‘call me Bill’ persona he has always been Philip, or Dr. Harris, correcting anyone who called him just Phil.” She went on to explain that she had maintained control of Philip’s personal devices and monitored his social media when he was away. She therefore was able to check his contacts when he asked her to let Terry Watkins into his home. She actually checked only because she couldn’t believe even Philip would invite someone to stay with him on the very day he was due back. Also, she saw another red flag when she heard Philip had returned a day early.

Hernandez said, “Terry, you have to meet me halfway. What do you have to say?” Terry responded, “What do you want me to say? Your fiancé assured us that the Alphas more than the Gammas were trying to manipulate the other timelines. We wanted intelligence to confirm your intentions. By the way, he never mentioned a fiancé, and said in your sorties to the Beta, Gamma, and Delta timelines you were the main agent for Alpha infiltrations.” Maria shook her head as she explained that due to Gamma preferences for a man it was Philip and not her who went to that timeline. Terry laughed, “Big shock – Dr. Philip Harris is a liar.”

Philip remained mostly silent, and actually withdrew to the sofa while Maria and Terry continued to discuss the situation. Once Maria provided fresh assurances that she would not turn him over to the authorities he showed her the device he was going to give to Harris to infiltrate Project Gypsy systems, telling her that the Beta timeline’s Cyber-Command had assured him it would overcome any encryption and allow transmission to the Betas without detection. Hernandez gave Philip another annoyed look when Terry talked about the help Harris had given in developing the Curtains B-Line for Beta equipment. He also showed her the retrieval devices he had brought with him which were to be activated for himself and Philip after the mission.

Hernandez expressed concern about unsanctioned transports, recalling the disaster that occurred when the first Alphas to visit the Gamma timeline started a COVID pandemic on that already suffering world. The various timelines now required a full range of inoculations across all timelines and that the status be reflected on the travelers' Data Cards. Terry had no Data Card, but he assured Maria he had received inoculations for both timelines before travel.

Terry hoped that Maria would keep her word, but strongly suspected she would soon call her security chief. Instead, she said, “I told Philip to alert the Gammas and Betas of Alpha infiltration as I had done with the Deltas. It appears he did too little with the Gammas and far too much with your timeline. Well, in for a penny in for a pound. For now, they won’t trust Philip to get near anywhere secure given his recent breaches in travel protocols. I’ll plant the device, and we’ll figure out the timing on your retrieval.”

Well, Terry now felt like Gomer Pyle, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.”

Project Gypsy Control Center, Area 51 Restricted Military Reservation, Nevada 1015 hours PST 16 April 2041 (Alpha Earth)

Dr. Maria Hernandez sat at her desk pondering what to do next. Just the prior Thursday she had been on the way to meet Philip, who was due to return from Beta Earth, when he called her. Maria had planned to take the week off to be with him as she knew he would be disappointed when he found out about the new 24-hour quarantine requirement for those returning from other timelines. Maria was surprised when Philip said on the call that he had returned a day early. Even more surprising was his statement that he was getting a ride home, but could she please go to his house right away as an old friend named Terry Watkins was expected anytime.

Of course, she met Terry but given the fact that she had never heard of him before, and there was no sign of any Terry Watkins on Philip’s phone or in social media, Maria quickly deduced that Terry was an agent from another timeline. Not that Maria was a great detective – more like Philip was an awful spy. Some months ago, shortly after Maria had returned from her assignment on Delta Earth, she was told that she would have a two-week break and then proceed to the Alpha timeline. Even though Maria had been promised the Project Gypsy Directorship on her return, she had been a little anxious to tell Philip there would be yet another separation, but surprisingly Philip was excited.

It turned out Philip had been tasked to go to both the Gamma and Beta timelines, and they would have a slight overlap in the Beta timeline. He then went on to add that they would have to keep their distance on Beta Earth as he would be traveling there as a Gamma. He added that he had been cleared to tell her about his “mission,” which was to identify potential intelligence resources on Beta Earth. Even prior to that discussion, Maria had become concerned with what she viewed as excessive secrecy and overreach by those running Gypsy.

Specifically, Maria didn’t like the fact that the Alpha representatives to the Beta and Delta timelines had been told to intimate that the Gammas were a potential threat due to almost a century of war, racial strife, and civil unrest. Maria herself had initially believed that assessment. She had even briefed Betas, Deltas and even Alphas that the Beta and Gamma timelines had been created by the rogue Professor McCarthy. She initially stayed silent after finding out that McCarthy was no rogue, and the Alphas had intentionally created the Beta and Gamma timelines in the hope that those worlds might develop solutions to problems the Alphas had essentially baked into the timelines with the assistance of AI. The Alphas wanted to see if those solutions, in the way of technology and policy, could be utilized in fixing problems that had plagued the Alphas since the mid-2020s. The technology developed by the Betas could prove to be especially useful, while the Gammas were in even worse shape globally than the Alphas. Ironically, the Gammas, using tech left behind by the Alpha agents early in the 20th century, were the first to be able to detect and communicate with the other timelines. Indeed, the Alphas were totally unaware of the Delta timeline created by the Betas until the Gammas told them.

Maria couldn’t help but feel sorry for the Gammas. Excepting the technology to observe and communicate across timelines, the Gammas were one to two decades behind their sister worlds. No one war approached the destruction of Beta Earth’s Sino-Soviet War, but there were almost constant major conflicts on Gamma Earth. Many on Gamma Earth referred to that part of their history as the second hundred years war. Truth be told between the first shots fired in 1911 and the comprehensive peace just over 93 years later there were some breaks in the fighting of a year or more. Also, alignments were constantly adjusted with some nations taking longer breaks, and various Empires or entities collapsing. The Gamma United States was much bigger than in the other timelines, but that came from absorbing much of a devastated British Empire.

The Alphas did get their test case in a way with the utter chaos outside the United States on Gamma Earth being so similar to what the Alphas now faced. Arguably the internal dissension within the United States of Gamma Earth was still less than what the Alphas had experienced in the last two decades. Maria had been especially disappointed in the program wherein the Alphas represented themselves to the Gammas as their saviors, and warned against trusting the Betas and Deltas, while telling those worlds that the Gammas were secretive warmongers.

All of the disillusionment is what prompted Maria at their last evening before Philip’s departure to ask him to ignore his mission and instead to just quietly let those he met in the Gamma and Beta timelines know that they shouldn’t accept Alpha representations at face value. She had explained that she had already done this to a small extent on Delta Earth and planned to continue on Beta Earth. Maria was glad that Philip readily agreed, but she shouldn’t have been surprised at how far he went with the Betas.

Even though Philip’s actions were almost manic, Maria felt she had to back him up. In that regard, Maria had cut her vacation short, and this morning used the device Terry had given her. It was essentially a flash drive which downloaded a program to silently spread itself and exchange whole databases across worlds. It did appear that if the Alphas knew about the program, they could reverse the procedure, but the program was undetectable unless you knew exactly what you were looking for. Terry was being retrieved with a scheduled window being opened in less than an hour. Philip had a retrieval device but wasn’t going to use it as yet. Maria hoped to get him back to Beta Earth under Alpha auspices. She had a meeting scheduled with General Shea this afternoon and hoped to leverage his decision to suspend Philip’s security clearance by offering to go to the Gammas to personally assess any damage. She had already told Philip that their engagement was off.

Maria then decided to go to the bunker and observe the scheduled communications window being opened with the Betas. As she opened the door there was a smiling fortyish man wearing the standard Project Gypsy civilian jumpsuit. Maria jumped back slightly, as the man apologized for startling her. He said his name was Ed, and asked if he could discuss something with her. Maria said she could give him a moment, “But if this is an HR matter –.” The man interrupted as she closed the door behind him, “Not at all Doctor, let me start with saying that I’m from the future.”

“What?” Maria practically shouted, but Ed just continued to smile at her. Were she not the director of Project Gypsy, Hernandez would have thought Ed was crazy, or that someone was playing an elaborate joke, but somehow, she just knew he was telling the truth. As that fact sunk in Maria noticed her heart was pounding, and her mind was racing through scenarios, when suddenly she felt a complete calm, and acceptance of the situation. She invited Ed to take a seat at the small conference table in front of her desk, went to the door to the adjoining office and told her secretary she would be in conference and asked not to be disturbed. Maria then went over to the bay window overlooking the bunker and closed the blinds. Rather than going to her desk, Maria took a seat at the table across from the still smiling Ed.

Maria then asked Ed if she should be worried that she both believed and trusted him. Ed responded, “It is a rather simple Jedi mind trick.” Maria couldn’t help but laugh. Ed then explained that was a joke, of course, but his clothing had been treated with a chemical that acted something like a pheromone, but instead of creating sexual desire it just instilled calm and trust. He went on to assure Dr. Hernandez that she still had free will. Ed said that Maria was at a crossroads for herself and the fate of four worlds, and he was present only to give her guidance, which she could accept or reject, but he was confident she would accept. When Maria asked why he was so confident, Ed again smiled and stated, “Dr. Hernandez, it’s a matter of history.”

Ed then asked if it would be alright if he could outline why he was there, and what was being asked of her. He went on to promise to try and answer any questions, but he would be somewhat constrained on what else he could say. Maria asked how long it would take. Her visitor indicated “You’ll miss the window being opened to the Betas, but don’t worry about Terrence Washington, as he’ll be home shortly. We’ll be done well before your meeting with General Shea though.” Well, if Maria had any doubts that this man was from the future that scotched them.

Maria indicated he should go ahead. Ed took two bottles of water from the mini fridge in the corner, handed one to Maria, returned to the table, and began:
Now, Doctor, I know from your memoir, yes, you’ll write a memoir, and it will be a best seller in all four worlds, that you never liked the Greek letter designations for the various timelines. Well, don’t be disappointed, but in my time, we consider ourselves as being in the Omega timeline. That is not to say that there have been multiple other viable timelines created or discovered. Rather, the four timelines you’re familiar with have interacted to such an extent that they have in essence become a single super timeline. If there were to be deviations going forward from here, they would by necessity create four new Earths each time. We don’t want that, and where it looks like it may happen, we nullify any such timeline before there is a substantial deviation.
Now I see you making a face. I’m sure you’re having visions of us strangling an infant in the crib. That is not the case. The nullification consists of merging the timeline back into what we now call the Omega timeline. You’re already aware of the first instance where we did this by merging what you called the Epsilon timeline into the Alphas. Nelson Mandela died while still in prison on Epsilon Earth but lived to become South African President on Alpha Earth. This merge created what was known in the Alpha timeline as the Mandela effect where some people had distinct memories of Mandela’s early death. There is also constant natural merging of timelines where minor changes lead to very short divergences followed by re-merging.
There is substantial travel between the timelines in the future. With very few exceptions (i.e. this sortie), time travel is forbidden. By the way, there is no real restriction as to how far you can go backwards or forwards in time. Ironically, the Alpha subterfuge you fed to the Betas and Deltas that the Gammas, who actually never traveled in time, had somehow created interference to limit time travel actually wasn’t too far off the mark. We had created that interference and used it on all four timelines. In the future we took action to limit the ability of your four timelines to go beyond the windows you have already used to travel backwards by creating interference. The time travel windows you know exist only because people in my time chose to allow them so as to allow for creation of the Beta, Gamma and Delta Earth timelines. Please don’t ask why – they haven’t even told me that.
Even now the four timelines you’re familiar with are intrinsically linked. By the way, my mother was an Alpha, and my father a Gamma; I have a niece with one grandparent from each of the four timelines. Doctor, how you act or fail to act going forward will have a profound effect on the integration of the timelines. I come from a world where you took all the right actions, but failing to do those actions could result in everything from cutting off contact between the various timelines to actual inter-timeline war.
Now as to your earlier question as to why I’m so confident you will follow our advice. As I said it is history to us. In your memoir you don’t acknowledge time travel, but your classified papers actually outline this meeting. I should say here my name is not really Ed, but that is how I’m identified in your notes. I was among several people who trained for this mission. Based on simulation performances and AI evaluations, it was determined I was the best candidate to make contact with you. If we’re wrong and this results in you not following our advice, this version of the timeline will have to be nullified to avoid the outcomes I’ve already described.
First, please go ahead with your meeting with General Shea today, but be aware that he will not reinstate the security clearance for Dr. Harris. Even so, it would be in everyone’s interest if you still not only go to Gamma Earth, but revisit Delta and Beta Earths. We would like you to take the device I’m going to give you, use it to replace the program on the device Agent Washington gave you, and upload the new program to a mainframe in each of the four timelines.

Maria somewhat sarcastically asked, “Is that all?” She wanted to know precisely what would happen when the program executed, what would happen to her, and how Philip would make out. Ed gave answers in more detail than she would have expected but avoided giving many personal details as to Maria’s future. He then added, “I’ll be leaving now. You may want to get some lunch before your meeting. Should I tell the future that you agree?”

Maria was surprised when she heard herself say, “Yes.”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 1235 hours EST 16 April 2041(Beta Earth)

FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington felt quite tired. He had been retrieved from the Alpha timeline less than an hour earlier. The first thing Terry did was call his wife. It was good to hear Adele’s voice, and the fact that she seemed excited to hear from him warmed Terry’s heart. He confirmed the kids were okay, and Terry explained he would stay where he was overnight as his debrief was expected to go late. In the meantime, he would have his own mobile back shortly, and she could message a time that he should call when the kids were home.

The debriefing started shortly after 1:00 PM. They recorded the interview, and also used a stenographer – Terry hoped that meant he wouldn’t have to write a report as well. Lunch was brought in for him, and Terry tried not to chew when speaking so the stenographer wouldn’t miss anything. They took a break just after 4:00 PM so Terry could speak to his children. Since they were all off the next day, Terry promised they could go to the National Zoo. The debriefing ended by 6:30 PM, and Terry considered going home to surprise Adele, but he was asked to wait and read over the minutes that evening to make sure no changes were needed.

Terry went to dinner, showered, put on some sweats, and was just going to see if the minutes were ready when there was a knock on his door. On opening the door, he saw none other than Major General Jorge Lopez, head of security at Project Infinity. The General was holding what appeared to be the minutes, and Terry expressed surprise that he was delivering it personally. Lopez just smiled and said he was giving it to Terry for reference as they were about to have a video audience with the President. When Terry asked if he could change, the General said, “I think it is best not to keep our Commander-in-Chief waiting. I’m sure she’ll understand, as she wouldn’t be calling if she could wait to hear what you have to say.”

Agent Washington and the General walked to an elevator and took it three levels down to the secure conference room. A guard checked both of their identifications, and then let them enter. Terry was surprised to see that Dr. Hansen, the titular Director of Project Infinity, was present. The only other person there was a petite young woman who was monitoring the connection with the White House. The President was already on the screen that took up about half of the wall facing the conference table. As Lopez and Washington walked in the President thanked Hansen and said she would get back to him on his concerns. The Doctor than stood up thanked the President and shook hands with Terry and the General before exiting the room.

General Lopez than looked to the screen and said, “Madame President, this is Special Agent Terrence Washington, recently returned from the Alpha timeline.” The President asked that they both make themselves comfortable and asked the General to prepare a report within the next week on the advisability of bringing Dr. Hansen fully into the loop on current operations concerning infiltrations into the Alpha timeline. President Townsend then thanked Terry for being available on such short notice. Terry apologized for his dress, but the President just joked that she assumed the Alphas had lost his luggage. Townsend explained that she wanted to get Washington’s impressions while they were still fresh in his mind, and apologized if they were going to rehash much of what he had just said in his debriefing. Terry responded he was at the President’s service.

It quickly became clear that the President was very interested in Terry’s impressions. The conference lasted just over 90 minutes. The President was especially interested in the two nights Washington went to a local tavern – once with Dr. Harris and once alone. Terry explained that his biggest takeaway from casual conversations with locals was that there was immense frustration. Frustration with inflation, the military occupations in Latin America and Asia, as well as dealing with the failed states around the globe. The occupation of Mexico seemed to be very divisive, with some Alphas complaining the United States was using it as a dumping ground for refugees, while others thought the government shouldn’t take in anyone. Terry commented that the most common sentiment he had heard was, “The government keeps telling us we won the wars – well losing couldn’t have been much worse.” I traveled with $8,000 in currency and spent more than $6,000 in less than five days. The President was impressed with Washington’s observations – congratulating him for doing “retail politics.”

After Terry covered his interactions with Dr. Harris and Dr. Hernandez, the President asked if he felt they could be trusted. Washington said he believed that Harris had sincerely wanted to defect, but he was not stable. From what Terry had learned before leaving the Alpha timeline, the report Harris had submitted to the Alphas would likely prompt them to suspend his security clearance. Terry recommended that if Harris made it back to the Beta timeline that he be given sanctuary, but he should not be used again in a covert capacity.

The President then asked again about Dr. Hernandez. Terry took a moment before responding, “Dr. Hernandez surprised me, likely because I was prejudiced by the inaccurate information provided by Harris. I know she kept her word, and let me return unmolested, but we’ll have to wait and see if she actually uploads the program that I brought to Alpha Earth. I’m afraid if she doesn’t my mission cannot be deemed successful.” At that point General Lopez interjected, “Madame President, Special Agent Washington is unaware that before today’s window from the Alphas closed, we received a treasure trove of material in a download – it appears Dr. Hernandez did indeed download the program.”

President Townsend then said she was not surprised, and added:
You see I did not originally call this meeting. Dr. Hansen called the White House claiming he had information that required my immediate attention. It seems he had received an electronic message this evening from Maria Hernandez, and she asked him to pass the message on to me. It was a video feed, which Hernandez appears to have been able to send without opening a window from the Alphas. She states she is willing to work with us and expected in the near future to be visiting the Gammas, Deltas and our timeline.

Terry just said, “Well I guess I didn’t have the biggest news for this briefing.”

Operation Reach Headquarters Facility, Waxahachie, Texas 1335 hours CST 15 July 2041 (Delta Earth)

Dr. Maria Hernandez was waiting in the office of Dr. Irene McCoy, the on-site director of technical services of Operation Reach. The title was misleading, because, although there were others who were technically higher on a rather complicated Organizational Chart for Operation Reach, everyone on-site knew that if you needed something done Irene was the go-to person. Maria was going to have a working lunch with Dr. McCoy, who was uncharacteristically late. Dr. Hernandez had only arrived in the Delta timeline a week earlier. She had just completed a very successful eight-week sojourn on Gamma Earth and was trying to assess whether Irene could be as much an ally as Bill Foster had become.

Maria’s meeting with General Shea in the aftermath of the debacle with Philip Harris, her former fiancé, had gone exactly as the mysterious Ed had predicted. Shea acknowledged that she could try to overrule him as to the suspension of Harris’ security clearance, but he was sure that the Secretaries of Energy and Defense would agree with him. Shea did promise to forgo any criminal investigation of Harris, and that he would be assigned unclassified work at Project Gypsy until Maria’s return from her mission to the other timelines. At that point Shea would re-evaluate Dr. Harris.

On her arrival in the Gamma timeline Maria was greeted by Dr. William French, and, as she had been warned, he immediately greeted her with the opening line, “Please call me Bill.” She couldn’t help but like the man. Maria had found the Gammas were not at all like the people described to her by Philip and the other Alphas. They were not misogynistic, and she was in fact welcomed with open arms. Likewise, although they had a much more violent 20th century history, including war and racial divisions that had been largely resolved by the early 21st century. In fact, when she told Bill that Philip would be sidelined for some time and he could resume being Dr. William Foster, he actually asked permission to hug her.

Within two weeks, Maria had established enough of a rapport with Bill that she broached the subject of uploading the program Ed had given her. She told him what the program could do, without saying how she got it. She explained her goal was to upload it in all four timelines to force information sharing. Bill asked for a couple of days to consider the request. Maria agreed but was concerned that she would be detained as a spy, or, worse yet, returned to the Alphas.

The very next day the restored Dr. Foster told Maria that he had consulted with his superiors. He explained that given the obvious bad faith the Alphas had displayed throughout their earlier contacts with the Gamma timeline, they would like nothing more than to use any resource that will give them unfettered access to Alpha records. After the Gamma’s best computer experts looked at the program, they admitted they couldn’t figure out how it worked, but it did seem to work. When it was uploaded, they got access to both Alpha and Beta databases during windows with those timelines. They were also able to communicate with the Betas without having to open a window. Maria generally served as the point of contact for these communications.

In the weeks that followed Maria couldn’t believe how close she was becoming to Bill Foster. They actually talked about marriage. Maria was going to be 40 soon, and Bill was almost ten years older. Things were over with Philip, but if she returned to the Alphas and they continued it would give new meaning to the term long-distance relationship. They agreed to see where it went if and when she returned to the Gamma timeline.

Maria was reflecting on whether the Deltas would be as open to her plan as the Gammas when Dr. McCoy walked in. Irene apologized for being late, and asked if Maria would like to go to a Tex-Mex place for lunch. Maria said that sounded great.

Dr. Maria Hernandez, Special Agent Terrence Washington, Sir George Wong, and Dr. Irene McCoy stepped through the now closing window from the Delta timeline onto Beta Earth. They followed the standard Beta procedure requiring they scan their Data Cards at a kiosk and get cleared by a technician before being formally greeted.

As expected, the Project Infinity Director Dr. William Hansen was there to welcome the sortie, but Hernandez immediately noticed Dr. Bill Foster, the Gamma timeline’s Project C+ Director, standing just behind him. Maria actually felt her heart skip a beat, and realized she was being rude when she went right past Will Hansen to grab Bill Foster’s hand. Quickly realizing her faux pas, she turned to see Foster already engaged in conversation with the others, thus saving her from any embarrassment.

Dr. Hansen was saying, “When I realized I would have the Alpha and Delta Directors visiting, I thought it only appropriate to invite Dr. French – I mean Dr. Foster—so we could all meet in person. He actually just beat you all through our new portal.” That’s when Maria realized this was not the same place she had traveled to and from on her prior visits to Beta Earth. She asked Will Hansen if they were still at Goddard, and he responded it was, but he would more fully explain over Maryland crabs and cold beer if they were all up for it.

Hansen went on to say that security restrictions prevented him from taking them to the Maryland shore, but he had recreated his favorite crab shack in their upgraded VR room, and “Not to worry, as the beer and crabs are real.” Dr. Hansen then asked Irene where the Delta computer specialist was. Dr. McCoy told him how the man had a mild adverse reaction to one of his Beta inoculations, but as she had worked with Sir George the last few days, they should still be able to go forward on analyzing the Shadow system. Irene then reminded them that she, unlike the other Directors, was not a physicist, having earned her Doctorate in Computational Science and Engineering.

Will Hansen remained as awkward as ever when he turned to Terry and asked, “Agent Washington, I hope you can join us, and I’m not just asking because our visitors require an escort in restricted areas like the VR room.” Terry just shook his head and smiled, saying, “Well, I have to stay here until I do a full debrief in the morning, so I accept your very gracious invitation. Just give me a few minutes to call my wife and let her know I’m back.” Not catching the FBI agent’s good natured sarcasm Hansen just said, “Good, I’ll just show our guests to their rooms, and we’ll meet you outside VR room # 1 at five thirty.”

While taking them to their rooms, Will spoke without interruption, extolling the capabilities of the VR upgrades. After meeting Terry at the entrance, they walked in as a group, and the program was already running. Maria had to concede to herself that Dr. Hansen certainly didn’t exaggerate. The six of them sat on benches around an elevated table with George and Irene sitting across from Maria and Bill, while Will and Terry occupied the ends. The table was covered by butcher paper, with a stack of paper plates, small mallets, melted butter and various other condiments. On top of a counter next to the table were buckets with already cooked blue crabs, an enormous roll of paper towels, a tub of “National Bohemian Beer,” and bottled water on ice. Will explained that anything they would eat, drink, or handle was real, but that the rest was pure VR, to include a VR template covering a real table.

The scene appeared to be a sunny day with a pleasant breeze coming in from the bay. They had an unobstructed view of a beach (and it smelled like the ocean), with what looked like families closer to the water. There were even seagulls flying over the beach, sometimes sweeping down to try and steal food. Maria thought Will had over done it slightly when she noticed the band playing Beach Boy music looked and sounded exactly like the real Beach Boys from the 1960s. She doubted Irene or Bill knew who they were. The band was close enough that they could hear the music, but far enough that the group could converse easily. Hansen was very proud as he explained that the scene was exactly the same as it was the first time he went to a real crab shack he loved in Maryland, except that controlling the weather allowed him to skip the need for an awning. Terry couldn’t help but rib Hansen, “So, Doc, how old are you anyway? Aren’t all the real Beach Boys long dead?” Will nodded, “Well, maybe I idealized the scene just a smidge.”

Maria had only had crab a handful of times but found herself showing Bill how to use his mallet and pull apart the crabs, while Terry and Will did the same for George and Irene. They were delicious, as was the beer. Will Hansen was on his third beer when he asked Maria if she had followed up on the request he had made on her last visit.

Maria then remembered that she had confirmed that Will, who was born in December 1969, had an analogue on Alpha Earth, and she had promised to try to get more detail when she was back in the Alpha timeline. She said she had gotten further information, and offered to tell him in private, but Will said to go ahead a share with the group. The Alpha analogue to Hansen was also a physicist, but he never became involved in Project Gypsy. He retired as a full professor from MIT in 2030, to care for his ailing husband, Jonathan Blaine, who passed away in 2033. The two had been one of the first gay couples to marry in Massachusetts in 2004. They had an adopted son, Mark, who was married with two children. Will stared for a moment and finally said, “I don’t think I ever met a Jonathan Blaine.” Maria then told him, “Well, he was a few years younger than you, and there was never a Beta analogue for him.” Will then suggested it might be better if they discussed anything else in private, and Maria said she would be happy to do so.

Trying to change the subject, Irene then commented that today had been her first time traveling to another world, and wondered if it was normal to be dehydrated. George then said, “Oh, I think you only have a few hours,” and everyone but the two Williams laughed. Maria then explained what had happened when Sir George landed in the Delta timeline, so they would understand the joke.

Will then said, “I suspect I’m the only one here who has traveled in time.” That got their attention. Terry and Maria knew the whole story, but Will surprised them by not holding anything back. Starting a fourth beer, Will outlined how he had taken a research sortie on a double jump back to 1905 Washington, D.C., with his good friend Professor James McCarthy, a Harvard University historian. “Truth be told my friendship with Jim is probably why they let me be his escort instead one of the regular military intelligence types. Unfortunately, Jim took advantage of our friendship to actually become part of history and ditched me before our scheduled return after abandoning his retrieval and location device. It wasn’t until long after my return that we realized he had created the Delta timeline by somehow helping Teddy Roosevelt win in 1912.” It was Irene who finally broke the tension by saying, “Well, I and my whole family sincerely thank you and Professor McCarthy.”

They continued to chat, and Dr. Hansen continued to brag about all the recent improvements to Project Infinity. Terry Washington, who was only drinking water, was tempted to tell the good Doctor to shut up, but he had been ordered to let Hansen tell the visitors anything, as gaining their trust in a possible conflict with the Alphas was deemed more important. Hansen continued:
The new portal you all went through today is the first of three new ones coming online. The plan is to have portals constantly open with one each dedicated to the Alpha, Gamma, and Delta timelines, and the old portal will be used for travel within our timeline. This and the VR upgrade we are experiencing now are possible largely due to the fusion initiative as it is now called bearing fruit. We don’t have to concern ourselves with power curves anymore. Also, since it became public, we’ve had an infusion of personnel from Brookhaven. I recruited one guy myself, who said I couldn’t offer him an opportunity to top helping giving the world unlimited clean power, and he apologized after I showed him there were three other worlds he could help.

That’s when Irene asked, “So the Betas are going to share this breakthrough?” Will would only say he had said too much. Terry’s curiosity then got the better of him and he asked his own question. “Doc, if the new fusion reactors provide so much power why aren’t we using these portals to do big things like travel the galaxy, or everyday things like delivering pizza?” Irene said, I can answer part of that:
Power is only half the problem. The travel, whether it be through space, through time or across universes, relies on quantum entanglement. This is somewhat an oversimplification, but to go somewhere you have to have already been there. In other words, if you want to use entanglement to land on the Moon or Mars you have to have been to the Moon or Mars. Similarly, even though each of us is second by second traveling into the future we can’t use quantum entanglement to speed up your travel, but if you’re sent into the past, you can be retrieved from the present. I believe the other Earths have experienced the same issue we’ve had since making contact across timelines in that in trying to go to our own past we can observe through peepholes but can’t open a transport window.

Maria remained silent, as Bill then jumped in:
For a computer geek you summed up the physics nicely. Let me try to see if I can restore Terry’s confusion. Our research can’t find a reason for the limitations on the spacing of the time jumps. The Alphas were originally telling the Betas and Deltas that the Gammas were limiting the other timelines’ access to time travel. That of course wasn’t true. There could of course be some as yet undetermined law of physics that creates the spacing of time jumps, but we believe the Alphas, while lying about the Gammas, were unknowingly correct about an intelligent force. We have three possible explanations. One theory is that it is being limited by Alpha created AI, perhaps even unknown to the Alphas themselves. It could also be limited by someone in the future, and we may not know this until we or our descendants arrive there. Finally, there could be another more advanced timeline that we are unaware of. Any of these theories alone or in combination may also explain the new problems with time windows.

Maria noticed that Will Hansen was having trouble keeping his eyes open. As she looked around, she saw the VR sun was setting, and that somehow a campfire and blankets had appeared on the sand a few meters off the platform where they had been eating and talking. As they walked toward the fire George had taken up talking to Terry:
As to why portals aren’t likely to soon be used for delivering takeaways, I would surmise it to be a matter of economics. There’ll be enormous economic displacement if portals were immediately used to transport everyday items, or even to sending people on vacation or in lieu of commuting. First off, as with the fusion tech, it will take time to scale up the infrastructure. I imagine the F.C. will want to have its own portals, and the U.S. will have multiple locations. Perhaps, to start with, putting portals in the same geographic locations as the other timelines. It may remain a controlled secret for some time, although I’m sure there are already leaks, thus limiting use. I’m sure it will be useful for deploying emergency equipment and personnel to disaster sites.

Sir George walked back to go to see if the room with a sign over a door marked restroom really had a toilet. Maria stopped him and complimented him on his insights. George leaned in and whispered, “I had some help from our mutual friend. We’re going to have to work together to get Shadow fully uploaded here.”

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 0800 hours EST 28 August 2041(Beta Earth)

Dr. Hansen, the Project Infinity Director, yawned but otherwise seemed none the worse for wear after hosting the beer-fueled get together in the facility’s newly upgraded VR room. His counterparts from the other timelines, Doctors McCoy, Foster, and Hernandez, were fully alert while mulling what to take from the small breakfast buffet set up against the wall opposite Will Hansen’s desk. The other attendees at the prior evening's soiree were otherwise occupied. FBI Special Agent Washington was being debriefed on his visit to the Delta timeline and Sir George Wong was sleeping in as his debrief over a secure line with the FC wasn’t scheduled until later in the morning.

Dr. Hernandez just took black coffee and was the first to take her seat at the conference table set up between Will’s desk and the buffet table. She remembered teasing Philip, her former fiancé, about his Starbucks addiction, but now found herself wishing that the Betas had developed slightly more variety in their caffeine delivery systems. The other directors all opted for a more substantial breakfast. The men loaded their plates and Will filled his own extra-large mug with coffee, milk and three sugars.

Will thanked them all for being on time, and after some chit chat where the rest of them thanked him for his hospitality the previous evening, he suggested they get started. As they would only be together one full day, the agenda was limited to two items. They needed to finish the analysis of the Shadow systems and how, going forward, the various timelines, hopefully including the Alphas, would cooperate on sharing information and technology. They agreed on some general parameters, but as Sir George’s report would significantly impact how they would go forward, that issue was tabled until he was available.

The other matter up for discussion was the next Presidential summit. Dr. McCoy indicated that as regarded the setup, all four Presidents had agreed that each of them would be transmitting from their own Oval Office, but they wouldn’t be sitting behind their desks. There would be a round table set up in the center of the room. Each President would be sitting at the table with their Project Director and one other aide of their choosing. Other aides could be in the room, but they would be behind their principal and out of sight of the other timelines. From each President’s perspective their counterparts and would be sitting at the same table. The Alphas had invited the other timeline Chief Executives to actually transport to their timeline for a true in person summit, but security concerns made that impossible. It was agreed that the Deltas would take the lead in creating and transmitting the template, which the other timelines would piggyback onto.

The actual agenda for the summit was deemed political, and outside the purview of the Directors. Even so, each of them shared what their ultimate boss was looking for. It was acknowledged that the Gammas would reveal at the summit that the other timelines were utilizing the Shadow System. They would also communicate that the other timelines were fully aware of the Alphas prior half–truths and outright deceptions. Maria then interjected, “You need to find softer wording for that revelation. You’re going to tell my President that, thanks to Shadow, we read your mail and, by the way, you Alphas are all bastards.” She reminded them that the last fifteen years on Alpha Earth were very challenging. The challenges were still ongoing, and while the Alpha deceptions were not excusable, they were understandable. It was agreed that alternative language would be recommended to the political leaders in the other timelines. Maria wondered how the Betas would react when they found out the Gammas and the Deltas were already accessing Beta timeline data bases, and how they would all take it when they realized she was going to try to give Alphas the same access.

They also discussed what each timeline was considering about going public with their programs. Complications included dealing with friendly powers such as the Federation Commonwealth on Beta Earth, and the Imperial Federation on Delta Earth, not to mention neutral powers and outright adversaries. Other than encouraging the politicians to put the item on the agenda, the directors agreed that they could only make recommendations. They did agree to recommend timetables be drawn up in each timeline for publicly revealing at least some aspects of the various programs.

Will Hansen then stood up to stretch. He said, I think we need Sir George to intelligently discuss Shadow. “Take a long lunch, and be back here by 2:00 if that’s okay?” The others all nodded their assent and filed out. Sir George was waiting outside the door. Irene McCoy smiled at him and asked him to join them in the cafeteria. Wong responded, “I would really love to, but it’s really urgent I speak to Maria. Please go ahead, and we’ll catch up.” After Bill and Irene left, George continued, “We’ve got a problem. Is there anyone who works here that you can absolutely trust?” Maria had to say, "No."

Wong took a second to think before continuing, “Well, is there someone with a high clearance here that we can risk approaching for help? How about Agent Washington?” Maria responded that it depended on what they needed the person to do, and even though she had assisted Terry when he was on Alpha Earth, she thought that as an FBI Agent Terry’s first instinct would be to immediately report anything out of the ordinary to Beta authorities. She then asked George why they needed Beta assistance.

George explained:
Using information I had received from Ed, our visitor from the future, I was able to make some assumptions about the Shadow Systems. Ironically, your contact with Will Hansen following the return of Agent Washington to this world, caused great concern here on Beta Earth. They expected the software that Terry had given you would allow them to spy on the Alphas when there was an open window, but they knew it wouldn’t facilitate secret communication across timelines with no open window. The Betas were worried that the Alphas were setting a trap, and I was brought in to find out if their own systems had been compromised.

That was why they finally decided to call on me. As you surmised, the program the Betas asked you to upload to the Alpha systems was developed by me. I hadn’t yet even been fully read in on Project Infinity when I was given the Curtains B-line and asked to improve on it. With help from Irene McCoy, I was able to determine that the Shadow System is a derivative of my program, but many generations removed. Of course that isn’t surprising given the source was our mutual friend.
I was able to locate where and how the Shadow System had infiltrated the Beta data bases, and confirmed my findings when I examined the Delta systems which, for lack of a better term, had been directly infected. I freely confess that even with Irene’s assistance I likely would not have been able to find anything, but for Ed. Based on my discussion with Ed, I withheld my findings from the Betas. As we discussed before leaving the Delta timeline, I was planning to access the Beta timeline network and directly upload or infect their systems, as you did in the other three timelines. The only problem now is that, despite protestations from my government, I will not be allowed to directly access Project Infinity systems. In other words, we need a Beta with sufficient access to do it for us. Even though we have some major capabilities now with the indirect spreading of Shadow from the other timelines, as Ed told us both, a full integration foreclosing any possibility of purging Shadow requires a direct upload, and a sync across all four timelines.

Maria thought for a second, “There is one possibility, but we’ll need to involve Irene and Bill.” George and Maria then met Bill and Irene in the cafeteria, where she explained her plan. As a group they returned to Dr. Hansen’s office. Dr. Hernandez very much regretted the choice they were about to force Will to make.

The four visitors walked in as a group. Will Hansen looked up from his desk and smiled, “Well, you’re a little early. How was lunch?” Sir George spoke first, “Dr. Hansen, before we begin, I have some very sensitive information to convey. My government has insisted that this information not be shared beyond the individuals in this room. I would request that we adjourn to a location that is a Faraday Cage, and that no recording devices be employed.” Hansen immediately agreed and said there was such a room just down the hall.

Hansen then led the others to the Faraday Cage, and they each placed their personal devices in small lockers in the foyer outside the room. Once inside they all found seats, and Director Hansen asked Sir George to begin. However, it was Dr. Hernandez who spoke first, “Will, please know if there had been any way to do this without revealing what you told me after the dinner last night I would have taken it.” Dr. Hansen dropped his smile, and the color immediately left his face.

Will knew immediately what Maria was referring to. Despite having a few too many beers, he had very much wanted to hear more detail of the life of the Alpha timeline’s Dr. William Hansen. Anticipating the party in the VR room might go late, Hansen had arranged to take visitors quarters to save himself a commute in the morning. On their walk back to the rooms he had asked Maria if she would give him more detail on his Alpha counterpart. She had tried to demur, but knowing Hernandez would soon be leaving Beta Earth, Will had practically begged. She finally relented and each took a seat in the overstuffed chairs of the otherwise empty visitors’ common area.

Hansen now wondered if he had been manipulated as part of some elaborate plan. Will dismissed the idea almost immediately, remembering Agent Washington only left them alone after he had said there was no risk in the common area and, in any event, he would take responsibility. Well, he thought there is no fool like an old fool.

Will remembered actually being jealous of his Alpha analogue. The man had a family and had experienced a long term committed relationship. Even though Will may have eclipsed the Alpha Hansen’s career, he would have traded places in a heartbeat. He could have left it at that, but the alcohol had made it difficult to suppress his emotions. Hansen did something no one working on a top-secret project should do, he shared.

Unlike his Alpha counterpart, the Beta Dr. William Hansen had never been in a committed relationship. His career had been all consuming. Although Will had stopped denying his homosexuality in high school, his sexual orientation was not the primary aspect of his life. Will had casually dated, and despite coming out while an undergrad, his mother still tried to fix him up with women through his thirties. His career was rewarding. He had some good friends, was respected by his students and it turned out that some of his published work was useful, if not integral, to the nation’s fusion breakthrough. In short, Will thought he was satisfied with his life. That all changed after he joined Project Infinity.

The team was much smaller at the beginning, and Will went on one of the first jumps back to 1969, just before the Sino-Soviet War. Shortly thereafter he renewed a casual acquaintance with Jim McCarthy, who came from Harvard as a researcher. Within a very short period he and Jim had grown close. They were about the same age and both were academics. As they became closer, they considered informing their superiors. They decided against doing so because the travel teams were being made up, and revealing a romantic relationship would prevent them from being paired up.

After almost three years, they were selected for the same mission and even specifically denied a romantic relationship when asked by the then Project Director. As the transport date approached, Jim broached the thought that they could simply not return. He argued that as an historian he could help create a better world, and Will’s scientific background could advance early 20th century Earth by decades. Will knew he should have reported that conversation immediately, but instead just pretended he thought Jim was kidding. Of course, Jim wasn’t kidding, and Will knew it. Rather than give up the relationship, Will seriously considered staying in the past with McCarthy. In the end, Will did not stay with Jim, but neither did he try to prevent what in essence was McCarthy’s defection to an earlier era.

Will had felt abandoned and used by Jim McCarthy, but he still often wondered if he made the right choice. Maybe if there was a multiverse independent of his machinations there was a world where he prevented Jim’s travel, and another world where he had stayed in the past with Jim. This all went through Hansen’s mind in a matter of seconds. He couldn’t remember all of what he had told Hernandez the night before, but he knew he had said too much. After composing himself, Dr. Hansen just asked, “What do you mean, and what do you want?”

Maria gave the broad outlines of what she had told the others who were now staring at him. To add insult to injury, Dr. Foster added that the Gammas had also independently confirmed that the short-lived Epsilon timeline was also (evidently accidently) created by Hansen on his first jump. Foster explained the Gammas had researched the issue because of Alpha accusations that the Gammas were responsible, even though the Gammas had never developed time travel.

Sir George answered the question of what they wanted, by explaining they needed him to do a direct upload of the Shadow system into Beta data bases. They all assured him that the system was to be integrated across all four timelines merely to insure no one timeline could deceive the others. Wong continued by explaining the Gammas and Deltas already had significant penetration on Beta data bases.

Of course, Dr. Hansen realized that the unspoken truth was that they would somehow make sure the Betas became aware of his earlier errors in judgment, and the best he could hope for was a dismissal from his post. He then looked to Irene McCoy, who had not spoken much, and asked her position. She responded, “I hate to say this, Doctor, but I believe this is important enough, that if asked I would say you were our leader.” Well, he certainly had a decision to make.

Virtual Inter-Timeline Platform 1704 Hours GMT 16 October 2041

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland Project Infinity (Beta Earth)
Project C+ Transport Center, Australian Northern Territory (Gamma Earth)
Operation Reach Headquarters Facility, Waxahachie, Texas (Delta Earth)

For the past five weeks the Project Directors from each of the four timelines had been meeting weekly using the new Virtual Inter-Timeline Platform System (VIPS). Over the previous hour they had finished the normal updates, and the only item left on the agenda was testing a new feature in VIPS. The system itself had been designed by Sir George Wong, who was now a fully accredited member of Project Infinity, even though he was not a United States citizen. The system was designed to give the four United States Presidents a chance to interact as if they were together, without having to leave their own timeline.

Wong had suggested he could add a feature wherein the participants in any meeting could interact in private if they wished. Just as on Sir George’s own Beta Earth, where the Federation Commonwealth Prime Minister and United States President would have public meetings, the bulk of their interactions and negotiations occurred in private where they could speak frankly. The Presidents uniformly embraced the idea. This worked to the benefit of the Directors, who would now have their own way to consult in private about fully implementing the Shadow System. The downside was that they couldn’t take final action because the Presidential summit had been delayed pending Wong’s new feature coming on-line.

Dr. Hansen signaled Sir George to enter VIPS. Each of the Directors appeared to George to be seated at a round table. He smiled and made a half waving gesture as he took a seat next to Will Hansen, who was the only person actually in the same room as Wong. Without saying a word, George held up his left hand and motioned a count to three followed by making a fist at which point the Directors pressed identical blue buttons on small consoles in front of each of them. Lights on each console then switched from red to green, and a disembodied voice announced, “You are no longer being monitored or recorded. In case of emergency press the blue button to reengage the monitors.” The message was the same in each timeline, but slightly out of sync because of micro-differences in the timing of pushing the button. Each Director then called out to see if anyone on the outside could hear them. When no one answered they presumed it worked. They each in turn then disengaged the system, confirmed that they again had contact, and reengaged the system hearing the same message.

Wong finally spoke, “Well, I think we will finally be able to schedule your Presidential summit. I apologize for the delay, but in the end, we should get the result we want.” George didn’t mention that the delay would have been longer, but for another visit from the mysterious Ed. Wong didn’t believe anyone other than Maria Hernandez knew of Ed. Maria had gotten her own visit, but even she didn’t know of Wong’s last interaction with the man from the future. Of course, for all George knew Ed had visited everyone in the room.

Will Hansen listened to Wong, and while he thought he would feel regret or, at best, ambivalence about what they were planning, he now felt real excitement. He had directly uploaded the Shadow System into the Beta Databases some weeks ago. Hansen didn’t kid himself about why he cooperated – the others had blackmailed him. Even so, he now shared the goals of his compatriots. He hadn’t understood the reference that Maria Hernandez had made to, “Drinking the Kool-Aid,” but she promised to explain when this was all over.

Maria Hernandez was beginning to think that they might just pull this thing off. On her return to Alpha Earth, General Shea had kept his word and reinstated Philip Harris. Philip was to be re-credentialed back to the Gammas, but this time as a true observer. She would actually like to find an excuse to visit the Gammas herself and see if she and Bill Foster could form a real relationship.

Bill Foster raised the prospect of using the new feature to have just one on one meetings with counterparts. The rest of them knew he was really hoping to be able to have some private contact with Maria. No one embarrassed him by verbalizing that thought, and instead all agreed it was a good idea.

Irene McCoy indicated that since the Deltas were responsible for the VR overlay, she had gotten permission for Sir George to be on Delta Earth for the summit, and they would grant asylum if things went “sideways.” Maria wondered if there was something developing between Irene and George.

Wong concluded their discussions. “The current plan is for you all to be present for much of the private sessions with the Presidents, but you will have to withdraw before they start the executive sessions. Just before you withdraw enter the code ABCD on the console. I hope that isn’t too hard to remember?” They all gave nervous smiles.

The four project Directors engaged VIPS and made small talk while waiting for a signal that each of the Presidents were ready to begin. The Directors were each in their respective transport facilities, and once the Presidents were in place, they would open a window to the Oval Office in their own timeline. Sir George Wong was working from the Delta timeline control room and had already done the overlay to VIPS. From each President’s perspective, they would be in their own Oval Office with their counterparts and other participants sitting at an ornate table that in each timeline had been placed over the Presidential Seal imprinted on the rug in the center of the room. Much more utilitarian tables were in place in each of the transport centers, but VIPS gave them the same ornate overlay.

Dr. William Foster was a little tired. Everyone else in this meeting, including the others from his own timeline, was in North America, so while it was between 4:30 PM and 7:30 PM on the 28th for the others, in Australia it was 6:30 AM on the 29th. Since the first successful test of the VIPS privacy feature on October 16th, they had conducted a half dozen tests and simulations, including setting up projections from each of the White Houses. VIPS was operating perfectly. The plan was for each President and an aide to be brought in at the same time, while the Project Directors continued working from their facilities.

It would appear to the other summit participants that each of the Chief Executives was flanked by their respective Project Director and another aide. The Alpha, Gamma, and Delta Presidents had each chosen their Vice-President as the other participant in the summit. Patricia Townsend, the Beta President, had chosen her new Chief of Staff, the recently retired Admiral James Roberts, formerly of Cyber-Command. Dr. Maria Hernandez thought to herself that President Townsend had made a smart choice. Roberts was familiar with Project Infinity, and in fact was one of the briefers who read Townsend in on the Project less than a year ago. Maria then wondered if President Townsend had told her own Vice President anything about Project Infinity. If not, and tensions were to rise because of what the Directors were planning, should something happen to Townsend it would be akin to Harry Truman taking over after FDR died in the Alpha/Beta timelines.

Sir George signaled from the Control Room on Delta Earth that each President was now in place. Just a second later, Maria found herself seated next to her own Chief executive, President Faison. Looking around the now filled table she saw all the parties were present. One unusual aspect of the meeting was the appearance of eight water pitchers for twelve people. The plan was for there to be a general discussion followed by a President only meeting. The Directors and the other aides would then withdraw to leave the Presidents in Executive session. On withdrawing, the Directors would activate the Privacy Function for the Presidents. At the end of the Executive session each President would call an aide into the Oval and have them notify their Project Headquarters to go back to the general session.

Since the Deltas were controlling the template, they were considered the closest thing to a host. President Redpath made the welcoming remarks followed by the Gamma, Beta and Alpha Presidents. In the open session it was decided that VIPS appeared to be working so well that questions of copyrights and patents across the timelines could be referred to a working group for study and report. A request from the Alphas to streamline procedures for travel between timelines, and allowing unfettered movement without escorts for inter-timeline representatives, was a nonstarter. Maria took note of the reality, or was it virtual reality, that Irene McCoy seemed to have a much more familiar relationship with her principal then she, Will Hansen, or Bill Foster did with theirs.

After a little over 90 minutes they took a short break. On their return, it was agreed to go into Executive session. The topics in the Executive Session were to include resource sharing, what (if anything) to share with each world’s populations, and relations with entities in other timelines not under United States control. The Directors each left the VIPS system and went to the outside monitors. After observing the other aides appeared to have left the room, they each pushed the blue button on their VIPS portable console, and the lights turned from red to green. After about two hours the Directors each received notice to return to VIPS. On a signal from Sir George they again pressed the blue button. The Presidents reappeared as the other participants were returning to their seats.

None of the Chief Executives appeared especially happy. Still, they gave closing statements starting with President Faison, followed by Townsend, Keller, and Redpath. They put off scheduling another summit until reports from the working groups were ready. Each of the Presidents forced a smile and posed for a faux photo. There was also reference to a written statement that would follow. Maria actually thought it likely the statement had been drafted before the summit even started.

As President Redpath thanked everyone and announced, “This concludes our proceedings,” George Wong spoke the word “Now” over the feed. Each of the Directors immediately entered ABCD into their consoles. They were just as surprised as everyone else when the power went out and they each found themselves alone in their world’s VIPS room.

It had been a week since the incident the Alphas were referring to as the Big Blink. In all four timelines the Project Directors engaging the Shadow Sync Command resulted in enormous power surges that traveled around the globe. The Directors had expected the command would result in permanently opening a window linking databases in all four timelines. It did that, and much more. The sync process also instantaneously sought out every database in each of the timelines and was able to insert itself to exercise control whether the database was linked to the VIPS program or not. To accomplish the feat, it evidently had to draw enormous power all at once. This resulted in the Big Blink, wherein almost everything using power on the planet winked out for about eight seconds before rebooting. Fortunately, there appeared to have been an AI safeguard in the Sync Command that spared emergency services as well as ships, planes and other moving vehicles. Even so, it was thought miraculous that across four worlds there were few injuries and no fatalities.

There was some minor panic, but the short duration of the outage combined with the lack of fatalities led most people to just go on with their lives. Conspiracy theories abounded, especially when governments and industry could offer no explanation. On Beta Earth many blamed the new fusion reactors. On Alpha Earth the prevailing conspiracy theory attributed the Big Blink to a computer virus left as a dead man’s hand by America’s defeated enemies. Alien intervention had a small plurality of opinion in the Gamma timeline. The Deltas actually came closest with a slight majority expressing concern that their recent AI experiments had created sentience. Theories about alternate timelines and influencers from the future failed to gain much traction on any of the Earths. Of course, governments in all four timelines promised investigations. In that respect they were telling the truth.

After the Sync Command was executed the VIPS system, like all other systems worldwide, reinitiated or rebooted (as they said on Alpha Earth). The only problem was that in reinitiating VIPS, the power draw was such that there was insufficient bandwidth to open another window in the same portal. The four timelines could communicate via VIPS, but the power drain prevented the timelines from opening a transport window at the same time. To make matters worse, they couldn’t shut the system down.

The only saving grace was that the energy was all coming from the Betas, who had the advantage of utilizing almost unlimited power from their new fusion reactors. The Betas had also constructed a second portal at their Project Infinity location. This allowed them to transport and retrieve people from the other timelines. For this reason, it was agreed the Betas would lead the investigation.

As FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington was known to all four Directors, he was leading the teams visiting each timeline. Since they couldn’t shut down VIPS, they utilized it to coordinate the investigation. Different groups were in and out of the system around the clock. Terry Washington had traveled to Alpha Earth and was sitting next to Dr. Maria Hernandez in VIPS. Present from the Beta timeline was Dr. William Hansen and Admiral James Roberts. Sir George Wong from the Beta timeline had remained on Delta Earth following the Big Blink, and he was sitting next to Dr. Irene McCoy of the Delta timeline. Dr. William Foster was representing the Gammas and was joined by Alpha Dr. Philip Harris who had been stranded on Gamma Earth.

Agent Washington spoke first. “We’re making progress on determining the cause. I have teams in all four timelines and, so far, we're getting cooperation from everyone we’ve spoken to. I started on Delta Earth, and then proceeded to the Alpha timeline. Given Sir George’s expertise, I may ask him to return to the Beta timeline after I finish here and on Gamma Earth.” Admiral Roberts then interjected, “That’s all well and good, but President Townsend wants some real answers soon, and I’m sure her counterparts feel the same way. It’s a little awkward here as we’re the only ones who can use a portal to travel. How long before the other timelines can bring new portals online?”

A quick survey revealed that the Deltas expected to have a portal available within two days. The Alphas said three to four days, and the Gammas estimated a week. Part of the reason for the delay stemmed from a conscious decision to have each timeline locate their new portals at their own version of Goddard. Their other facilities would remain, and if they managed to disconnect VIPS they would become backups.

Agent Washington indicated he would be going to Gamma Earth the next day, and that he would continue to coordinate. VIPS continued to run in the background, but all of the participants disconnected from the system. Maria turned to Terry and asked if he needed anything else from her. He responded, “Yes, I’m collecting all the consoles used by the Directors at the summit. I’m bringing them back to Beta Earth for comparison and analysis.” As Maria started to object, Washington interrupted her, saying, "I know you have backups, and to quote Sir George, I need that ‘Now,’ and by the way, I know about the Directors' conspiracy.” Maria couldn’t help but give out an audible gasp.

Hernandez recovered quickly, trying to cover the gasp with a cough, then said she didn’t know what Washington was talking about. Terrance Washington was an experienced investigator who knew how to control a conversation. His goal was to use Maria Hernandez to confirm what the investigation had already uncovered and see what she could add. Ideally, he would do this without revealing to his subject, and make no mistake Maria Hernandez was now a subject, what he already knew. She was not in custody so, even if it turned out a Beta FBI Agent was considered to be law enforcement on Alpha Earth, there was no need to read the Doctor her rights.

Terry answered her question saying, “No offense, Doctor, but I think you know exactly what I’m talking about. Now I haven’t yet said anything to anyone in the Alpha timeline about what I know. Let’s just grab a cup of coffee and we can discuss how I can possibly help you mitigate the damage to your life here. I’ll even spring for one of those extravagant concoctions our mutual friend Philip introduced me to on my first visit to this timeline.” Seeing she had little choice, Maria nodded her assent and they headed to the snack bar.

Maria grabbed a seat at a small table in the far corner of the room, while Terry grabbed them two coffees. As a visitor, Washington merely waived his temporary identification in front of the robot-barista/busboy/cashier and verbalized his order. He brought back a Caramel Macchiato for Maria and had gotten himself a Nitro Cold Brew. Maria tried denial again saying, “Terry, I don’t know what you think you have, but I am not involved in any kind of conspiracy.” Special Agent Washington looked her in the eye and said, “Doctor, this is an official inquiry sanctioned by your government and mine. Now you can request an Alpha representative be present, and I’m sure General Shea will assign someone to join us. In point of fact, the only reason I haven’t already informed Alpha security is that I feel a certain amount of gratitude for the assistance you gave me on my first visit to Alpha Earth. So please don’t bullshit me.”

Hernandez decided to try to go on the offense. She reminded Washington that on his first Alpha visit the FBI agent was actually a spy, and questioned how the Alphas would feel about him leading the inquiry if they knew that. Terry was unperturbed, pointing out that with the massive data dumps between the timelines caused by the “Directors’ Conspiracy,” he was certain that everyone’s secrets would soon be out in the open. He went on to point out that while his actions might cause a rift in Beta-Alpha relations, the assistance she and Philip Harris rendered to him would likely make them criminals in the Alpha timeline.

Maria hadn’t touched her coffee, while Terry was almost finished with his. Washington sensed she was trying to figure out what he knew and how he had found out. Hernandez was brilliant and had most likely already discerned that Dr. William Hansen was Terry's source. Poor Will had spilled his guts in a very casual meeting much like the session Terry was having now with Dr. Hernandez. Terry, of course, wasn’t going to tell Maria how much he knew or how he knew it. He tried to subtly suggest that Philip Harris was the source but could tell Maria wasn’t buying it. Maybe Philip wasn’t in on it. They hadn’t officially removed Hansen so as not to tip the co-conspirators. On Terry’s visit to the Delta timeline, his interviews with Dr. McCoy and Sir George had been much more oblique. Terry had already arranged for an MI5 agent to be present when they would have a much more direct interview with Wong back on Beta Earth.

Maria finally said she didn’t have anything to add to what she had told the investigator on Washington’s staff who had spoken to her the day before. Terry sighed. He truly liked and felt indebted to Dr. Hernandez. “Look, I’m traveling to the Gamma timeline tomorrow. I can offer you an investigative excuse to accompany me to assist in my inquiry. If you want to speak to me there that’s fine. If not, when I turn in my report after I return to the Beta timeline you may not want to be on Alpha Earth anyway.” Maria took a small sip of her now cold coffee and said, “I’ll join you. I’d love to see Will Foster again. Thanks.” Washington thought that Maria Hernandez was going to be harder to crack then Will Hansen.

Project C+ Transport Center, Australian Northern Territory 1107 hours ACST 30 October 2041 (Gamma Earth)

Beta Earth FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington was sitting in a windowless room the Gammas had given him to work in. Even though it was spring in Australia, the temperature was 36 degrees Celsius outside the Transport Center. Terry didn’t like having his seasons reversed and was hoping that if he had to make future visits to this timeline that their Maryland portal would be operational. At least the air conditioning here worked well.

The room had a computer, but Terry wasn’t making any use of it. Using an electronic device was deemed too high a security risk after what the Gammas were referring to as the “World Hiccup” made virtually all databases across the four timelines available to Project C+ and its counterparts on the other Earths. Washington was reviewing his own handwritten notes, as well as some barely legible summaries of interviews done in all four timelines by his investigative team. All formal interviews were being recorded using old analogue systems. Later today the Betas were sending a data input specialist with a Top-Secret clearance and, more importantly, real typing skills to try and transcribe everything on a half century old electric typewriter the Gammas had provided.

Terry was fairly confident he knew what had happened. He also believed his investigation would give the experts sufficient evidence to piece together how the Directors and Sir George had accomplished the feat. In talking to the experts on his team, Washington was much less sure that a way could be found to reverse the damage. Dr. Hansen, who had outlined the Directors’ Conspiracy in great detail, steadfastly refused to acknowledge damage was done – instead saying it was merely a new reality. The fact that he wouldn’t expand on that statement gave little hope of ever discovering why the Directors acted as they had.

After Hansen’s confession Terry had traveled to the Delta timeline. Having previously met Dr. McCoy, and actually acted as an escort for Sir George, Terry was able to justify interviewing each of them personally. He never disclosed that Will Hansen had already told him of their plot. Interviewing them separately, Washington had stuck to mostly technical issues. Wong had appeared nonplused even when asked why he had called out the word “Now” just before the blackout. Wong explained that was just the signal to cut the connection. The only time he got reactions from either Wong or McCoy was when he asked about what the letters ABCD being entered on the portable consoles meant. They each answered as Hansen had told Terry they would. They had agreed that if asked they would all give the same explanation that ABCD was just the command to terminate the VIPS connection. They also each insisted that they didn’t know why the blackout occurred. They obviously had expected the question about the word “Now” and even though they had prepared a story about the ABCD entry they were surprised Terry knew about it. When Washington informed McCoy that his team had already taken custody of the console she had used, Irene just said, “Okay.”

After arriving on Alpha Earth, Terry had let one of his team members interview Dr. Hernandez, hoping it would lull her into feeling safe. Even when he personally followed up, Washington had not pressed as hard as he could. Maria knew her communications were being monitored so she couldn’t contact the other subjects to gauge how much Terry knew, or who may have talked. He was glad Dr. Hernandez had taken his offer to go with him to Gamma Earth. He liked the scientist, and being off Alpha Earth would possibly provide her some degree of protection when Agent Washington shared his findings.

When they had walked through the window from Alpha Earth to Gamma Earth the day before Dr. Hernandez was smiling, but Washington noted the smile quickly faded when she realized that Philip Harris and Bill Foster were both absent from the reception area. Terry had previously directed his team to pull them for individual interviews. He had his people time their interviews such that their absence would further keep Maria off balance.

Maria was taken to guest quarters, while Terry joined Dr. Foster’s interview in progress. It terminated rather abruptly when Foster said he would not be talking anymore without a direction to do so from the Gamma President of the United States. That took Terry back. Fortunately, his team had already secured the console Foster had used in the VIPS conference. Realizing he was operating above his pay grade, Washington decided to send a handwritten message back to Beta Earth requesting instructions. When they brought Philip Harris in, the failed defector intimated to Terry that he had valuable information but preferred to reveal it only on Beta Earth. Terry added that to his message.

Washington was going to ask Dr. Hernandez to come see him when there was a knock on the door. He called for whoever it was to come in. A lean olive-skinned man about 40 years of age came in. He said, “Agent Washington, my name is Dalton, I’m the data input specialist you asked for. I was also told to give you this.” The man then handed Terry a copy of his credentials and envelope marked FOUO for SA Terrence S. Washington EYES ONLY. Washington thanked Dalton and told him to see about getting quarters. After Dalton withdrew, Terry opened the envelope, expecting it to be an answer to the message he had dispatched the day before. He then read the typewritten message.

Terry Washington looked around the room, as the data input specialist sent from the Beta timeline indicated his equipment was ready. There were two old-style video cameras set up in the ceiling. Dalton, the input specialist, had indicated that he could monitor both cameras on a split screen using an old-style closed-circuit connection. One camera would be static and would capture everyone seated at the table. Dalton could use a remote control wired through the wall to change the aspect or do close ups as needed on the other camera. Only the static camera had an audio feed which Dalton heard through noise cancelling headphones. Everything was analogue to prevent a premature sharing of the information gathered. Before the subjects entered Dalton would move into a small connecting room to monitor the interviews. After the session began, he would note the time on the tape whenever Agent Washington signaled to do so by tugging on his ear.

Agent Washington did not like this setup at all. He had been sent here and to the other timelines to supervise an investigation. You simply didn’t bring all your subjects together and ask them if they would mind confessing. Orders were orders, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t upset at having to just sit down with some self-important scientists rather than taking his kids trick or treating for Halloween.

A uniformed security guard then knocked on the door to indicate all of the interviewees were now in the waiting area. Well, that was one small victory anyway. Terry had stood fast on keeping them all separate, and requiring they have escorts until reporting for this session. Washington signaled for Dalton to move into the connecting room and start recording.

Agent Washington stood in front of his chair at the head of a table with three seats on each side. Terry motioned them to take their seats. There was a manila folder and cardboard nameplate in front of each chair. To Terry’s left were Dr. Maria Hernandez, Dr. William Hansen, and Dr. William Foster. To his right were Dr. Irene McCoy, Sir George Wong, and Dr. Philip Harris.

Washington pointed to the restroom, and asked, if possible, they wait until a break to make use of it, so they would not have to stop the taping (informing them of the recording was contrary to Washington’s recommendation). They had all eaten an early lunch, and Terry pointed out there was a water cooler with cups. If the session went long, they would bring in dinner.

Terry finally began, by reading from an index card:
It is now 1157 hours Australian Central Standard Time on 31 October 2041 at room 3B7 of the Project C+ Transport Center in the Australian Northern Territory on Gamma Earth. I am FBI Special Agent Terrence S. Washington of Beta Earth, appointed to lead the inquiry into the power surge and inter-timeline blackout following the Presidential summit ten days ago. Also present are Dr. Maria Hernandez and Dr. Philip Harris of Alpha Earth, Dr. William Hansen, and Sir George Wong of Beta Earth, Dr. William Foster of Gamma Earth, and Dr. Irene McCoy of Delta Earth.
Effective immediately, by agreement of their respective governments, each of the aforementioned individuals has been suspended from their duties in Project Gypsy, Project Infinity, Project C+ and Operation Reach. They are being directed to view the top document in the folder in front of each of them. If they sign the document, they will be immune from criminal prosecution across the four timelines provided they answer honestly and fully any and all questions posed now, or in any future sessions.

Washington had taken a calculated risk. He had lied. Except for Hansen, none of the scientists had been suspended. Also, he had no authority to grant immunity, and he certainly wasn’t going to tell these people that he had been ordered in essence to blow any chance of getting a prosecution. His bluff paid off as they all signed and as directed handed up two signed copies of the forms. Terry then initialed one copy and handed them back. Then he said, “Now let’s get started.”

The group was then directed to examine the next document in their folders. It was a three-page summary of what Dr. Hansen had revealed about the “Directors’ Conspiracy.” Terry Washington tugged his ear as each of the subjects individually acknowledged they had read the document. When asked, Will Hansen acknowledged that the summary accurately reflected what he had told Agent Washington and the other investigators, and he declined to make any changes.

Washington asked each of the subjects to in turn indicate if anything they had read was inaccurate. Dr. Hernandez, Dr. Foster, Dr. McCoy, and Sir George each signaled that they found no inaccuracies. Dr. Harris indicated he had no idea as to the accuracy and denied being involved in any conspiracy.

Terry Washington pulled on his ear and said, “As you aren’t mentioned in the statement, I can almost believe that. Why then did you imply yesterday that you had valuable information, and ask for transport to Beta Earth?” Harris responded, “Well, I might have some tangential knowledge in that I believe the conspiracy may have started when Maria – sorry I mean Dr. Hernandez— assisted you and me on your mission to Alpha Earth last April. Due to my own small involvement then I do really want to go back with you to the Beta timeline. Finally, I do have information on people I was trying to recruit for the Alphas the last time I was on Beta Earth.”

Washington had to give Philip credit. In just a couple of sentences he had made statements exonerating himself, possibly compromising Terry’s own status as an investigator, and putting blame on the former fiancé who had dumped him. Knowing Philip Harris’ proclivities made Terry expect this kind of gambit. He stared directly at the man as he said, “That is extremely interesting, Doctor, but given my experience with you we are going to have some in depth conversations one on one following this gathering. I will certainly want to know who you may have compromised. You should stay for these proceedings anyway. First, let me ask, did you tell the Alphas about your recruits, and was I on your list?” Terry pulled his own ear and smiled as Harris appeared to slide down into his seat and admit that he had in fact named Agent Washington as a possible Alpha asset when the situation was just the reverse.

Each of the Directors and Sir George were questioned in turn. None added very much to what Hansen had given him. None mentioned any time traveler having given them information or direction. When asked about their motives, they each insisted it was based on forcing the Alphas to come clean and getting the Betas to be more forthcoming with sharing technology.

Sensing George Wong was wavering and seeing him look to Hernandez when asked how he developed the Shadow System, Terry pressed, and pulled on his ear. “Sir George, immediately following this session you are returning to the Beta timeline, where you will be subjected to an interrogation from United States investigators in the presence of an MI5 representative. Now I ask you again, and if you want to keep any immunity, I suggest you answer truthfully now. Once again, how did you develop this tech?”

Wong was starting to answer when the data input specialist came through the adjoining door. Terry thought, this is great, just when I’m getting to something new, he is going to tell me there’s some recording issue. Harris spoke up for the first time in an hour, “Um, Mr. Dalton here was one of my possible assets.” Dalton himself then said, “Please just call me -” Bill Foster completed the sentence “Ed.”

It quickly became apparent that Agent Washington and Dr. Harris knew the man who had just entered the room as Edward F. Dalton, a data input specialist from the Beta timeline. While Sir George, Dr. Hernandez, and Dr. Foster simply knew the man as Ed. From the cross conversations it was also apparent that George, Maria, and Bill each saw Ed as something much more than a just a data input person. Dr. McCoy spoke up, “Am I the only one here that doesn’t know this guy? And who is he anyway?” Dr. Hansen said that he had seen Dalton on Beta Earth but had never actually spoken to him. Maria looked at Bill Harris while responding, “George and I both know him, but we were unaware he had made contact with anyone else.”

Washington was trying to get back control of the room when Ed Dalton asked if he could say something. Since he couldn’t see how the session could go anymore off the rails, he said, “Go ahead, but just tell me first if the recording system is still engaged.” Ed took a seat at the opposite end of the table from Terry. “It isn’t, and I don’t think you’ll want to connect it after you hear what I have to say, but if I’m wrong, I’ll happily repeat everything on camera when I finish.” The FBI agent shook his head, thought for a moment, and said, “Why not? This whole thing is FUBAR anyway. Just start with who you really are.”

Ed smiled, as he had in his first meetings with Maria, George, and Bill. Once again, he had a general calming effect on the room, and began. He spoke to the whole room, but directed most of the comments to Agent Washington in particular:
Agent Washington, I have the utmost respect for your investigative skills, and sincerely believe if you follow my suggestions, you’ll be alright. I’m going to say some things that may stretch credulity, but if you let me finish, I think your questions will be satisfactorily answered.
First of all, I am a time traveler from your future. All four of the timelines you know still exist and the four Earths interact to a much greater extent. Given this interaction we refer to ourselves as being in the Omega timeline. I had already explained this to Maria, George, and Bill. I contacted them each individually and had asked Bill to not share the fact that I had contacted him with Maria or George. It was my mission to get Maria to recruit the others to upload the Shadow System in all four timelines. This laid the foundation for what will eventually evolve into the Omega timeline or reality.
Now shortly after Dr. Harris arrived on Beta Earth using Dr. Foster’s name, I was inserted onto Beta Earth as Data Entry Specialist Edward F. Dalton. As I am very proficient with archaic computers – no offense Sir George—I was able to quickly compromise the Beta Earth systems and create the Dalton identity, along with appropriate documentation.
I let Philip Harris think he was recruiting me, while taking the opportunity to confirm he had in fact offered to defect to the Betas. In his attempted recruitment, Dr. Harris revealed a great deal more than he should have. He didn’t give me his real name, but he did tell me he was an Alpha, and that you were going to go on a clandestine mission to Alpha Earth. It was I who convinced Harris that he should accompany you to Alpha Earth. It wasn’t difficult as Philip was excited at playing double agent – assisting the Betas, while reporting you, myself and others he had spoken to as potential assets to the Alphas. By the way, Philip, as I’m sure Agent Washington has known for some time, the two scientists you approached out of desperation on your last day on Beta Earth promptly reported your overtures to Beta Security.
The program you gave Dr. Hernandez to upload into the Alpha systems is actually a distant ancestor of the Shadow System. On the day you were returning to Beta Earth I made contact with Maria. As she agreed to assist you, she went further by taking steps to ensure the Shadow System was uploaded directly into all four timelines.
I knew from history that Maria would not be able to act alone. I also knew that the Betas would call in Sir George Wong when they couldn’t figure out why their program was doing more than it should. That was why I made contact with George, convinced him of my identity, and obtained his agreement to assist Maria. Please don’t feel guilty for not discerning this on your own as Sir George was recruited by me before you were ever assigned to accompany him to Gamma Earth.
I never contacted Dr. McCoy because she was willing to assist Dr. Hernandez without my prompting. Dr. Foster was only recently contacted to facilitate getting Dr. Hernandez asylum on Gamma Earth, as the Alphas are going to be upset for some months. Likewise, I know from my last contact with George that the Deltas, at Irene’s urging, are offering him asylum to prevent Beta retribution. That brings us up to date.
I’m ready to explain how I would suggest you proceed, but do you mind if we order in some dinner first?

Terry couldn’t believe how Dalton had taken over the whole process, but he still asked one of the security guards seated at the station outside the door to take the group’s dinner orders.

Special Agent Washington didn’t want to admit it but taking a break to have a meal was a good idea. He felt refreshed and had used the time to think. Even though they mostly ate in silence the rest of the group seemed more relaxed. Terry hesitated now to refer to the others as subjects, partly because he wasn’t exactly sure how Dalton would characterize him. Washington had considered placing Dalton under arrest. The man had admitted to breaching security at a Top-Secret facility, and Terry wanted to do something to show he was still in control. The problem was, Terry wasn’t 100% sure he was still in charge here. Washington considered what he would do if Dalton simply refused to go into custody. If Dalton really was from the future, any attempt to detain him would likely result in the man literally disappearing. He would let this play out just a little longer.

Once the last of the trash had been removed Terry said, “Alright, Mr. Dalton, please continue. I would direct you to start by explaining why, if you have such easy access to our ‘archaic’ systems, you didn’t just upload the Shadow System in each timeline yourself.” Dalton responded:
Certainly, and as I said earlier – please call me Ed. I provided assistance to these wonderful people but didn’t just do it myself because history told me they did it. Everyone here retains free will. They could have each chosen not to go forward with the plan, or, as in the case of Dr. Hansen, attempt to withdraw from what you have called the “Directors’ Conspiracy.” By the way, in my time it is referred to as the first step on the path to unity.
The simplest way to explain this is that we’re all part of a recursive loop. The people you refer to as conspirators have free will, but I was confident of the choices they would make, and how I should assist, because from my perspective it has already happened. Now I can’t give you a lot of specifics on where you are all going, but I can share a few things to help you decide how you want to proceed.
First of all, if you accept my help, I can give you a report already written in your style truthfully outlining most of the facts you’ve uncovered. The remaining facts concern my involvement. I would suggest you reveal whatever you believe appropriate, but that it be in a separate addendum. This is because the main report will likely be publicly released much quicker than you might think. Putting references to time travel in a separate addendum will avoid having to have redactions that will just raise questions. Second, and perhaps more important to you, I can give an update to the Shadow System that each timeline can use to prevent automatic sharing of files. It won’t erase the files already shared, but I think all four timelines will thank you. The update will also allow use of transport and communication from the same window even when VIPS is running.
Finally, none of you here should believe this is going to result in everyone having what the Betas and Alphas used to refer to as a “Kumbaya moment.” The Alphas especially are going to have a negative reaction. There is going to be what amounts to a Cold War between the Alphas and the other timelines, with severe constraints on contacts and exchanges. The Betas are also going to be reticent to expand contacts.
Thanks to efforts of people in this room, that will change after President Townsend starts her second term. After the existence of the timelines becomes public knowledge, she will be the first political leader to travel to another timeline. She will visit the Deltas, then the Gammas, and finally the Alphas. The Alpha trip will culminate in her visit to that timeline’s Vietnam Memorial where she will take an etching of the name of the man who became Patricia Townsend’s father on Beta Earth but died in combat on Alpha Earth. Townsend’s travel begins the thaw. Does anyone have questions?

Terry stood and said, “No questions for now. I assume I can take some time to read my report, and have experts look at the proposed Shadow update. Please wait here while I arrange for each of you to have escorts until we reconvene tomorrow when I’ll tell you how we’re proceeding.” They all nodded, and Ed said he would fully cooperate, but couldn’t help adding, “No pressure, but our simulations show a 27% chance that deviating from the recommended course of action will result in an actual armed conflict between two or more of the timelines with nuclear weapons delivered through a portal being the most likely form of attack.”

Terry said, “I’m glad there’s no pressure. I’ll let you all know in the morning what time we’ll start.”

Project C+ Transport Center, Australian Northern Territory 1005 hours ACST 1 November 2041 (Gamma Earth)

Special Agent Terrence Washington had called to start the session at 9:00 AM, but put it off an hour after Doctors McCoy, Hernandez, and Foster all requested permission to attend All Saints Day Mass being held by the Facility’s Catholic Chaplain at the same time. Maria had been surprised to see that Ed had also attended the service, as she had half expected he would have returned to the future. Who knows, maybe he had done so, spent two weeks at home, and returned just a moment after leaving. Each of them had an escort, and had been unable to interact, but when the escorts brought them back to the conference room, they were free to speak with each other, at least until Terry showed up.

Everyone save Washington was back in the room before 10:00. Even though he realized it would make him look like a third grader, Bill Foster switched his cardboard nameplate with Will Hansen’s so that he could sit next to Maria. Maria and Bill spoke quietly to each other, while Irene McCoy and Sir George, sitting across from them, did the same. Ed was in the same seat he had taken the day before and was answering (or deflecting) a series of questions from Will and Philip.

Hernandez believed it was likely they were once again being recorded and thought Washington’s delay in arriving might well be a means to see if any of them would say something useful outside his presence. She decided it didn’t matter, and when Bill expressed similar concerns, she reminded him that they hadn’t held anything back, so they might as well talk. He agreed, but then Maria added – “You did share everything didn’t you? I mean the first I heard about you meeting Ed, and Gamma Earth granting me asylum was yesterday.” Bill responded, “I don’t recall you telling me about Ed, and, by the way, he is not omniscient, as I had approached my government about granting you asylum before you even left here last July.”

Maria actually started to choke up. She then suggested that if she was really going to live on his Earth then maybe he could expound on some of the differences between the Alpha and Gamma timelines in 2041. Maria actually was fairly familiar with the differences in the timelines but gave Bill the opportunity to be her guide.

She started by asking about some subtle differences she had noticed in the Mass they had just attended from those on her Earth. Bill explained that while the Alphas and Betas had Vatican II in the 1960s, and the Deltas had Lyons III in the 1950s, his world didn’t have a Church Council until Shannon in the 1990s, even before the last of his world’s Great Wars. So, while all four timelines now had Catholic services in the vernacular, as opposed to Latin, the translations differed somewhat. Like the other three timelines, the Gammas had a child sex abuse scandal that rocked the Church, but as it came to light when the Shannon Council was sitting there was a quicker, more robust response.

Since they had already talked religion, they next turned to politics. Bill went into great detail on wars that took up almost a century. He described how the British Empire, as well as much of Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, were basically destroyed in the wars against communist aggression. He emphasized that these conflicts actually closely paralleled what the Alphas would experience in the 21st century. Those same wars made the Gamma United States much larger than their Alpha counterpart.

Maria asked about the Gammas’ Constitutional Convention, noting that the Alphas were the only timeline not to have had a second such convention. Bill explained that the integration of the massive new territories prompted the Gammas to call the Convention. The Gammas had no British Commonwealth, Imperial Federation, or Federated Commonwealth, so much of the territory those entities controlled became part of the United States. Washington City, Maryland (as opposed to the Alphas’ Washington, D.C.) remained the Capitol, but the Convention created three administrative divisions with Capitols in London, Ottawa, and Canberra. Likewise, “United States Associates,” on Gamma basically consist of allied nations which, while technically independent, were essentially United States protectorates due to the devastation they experienced. Bill also smiled as he told Maria that Gammas had not had direct election of Senators until the Convention. Maria laughed, asking, “Do women vote here?” Fortunately, she immediately realized Bill was joking when he told her they were working on it.

Maria was taken aback when Bill told her that former enemy territory remained essentially wasteland. He went on to say that habitable areas are still under occupation. “We’re not proud of how we treated the defeated enemies, but their prosecution of the wars was so ruthless we felt we had no choice. We have started making use of technology we’ve gotten from the Beta’s to fix things.” Unlike the other timelines, the Gammas had no United Nations or Inter-Continental Congress. There had been a nascent League of Nations that ceased to exist less than a year after convening its only session in 1921. Diplomacy and war had been conducted by bilateral agreements and military alliances. Maria looked quite sad, and Bill tried to change the subject. He said, “Let’s talk about you – I want to be part of your life here.” Maria smiled and took his hand.

Sir George and Dr. McCoy were having their own conversation. Irene was somewhat perturbed at not being told her fellow scientists were being guided by an oracle from the future. George agreed that he should have told her. He went on to express gratitude for her assistance in getting him asylum on Delta Earth, but concern that he would not be able to return to the Beta timeline.

Irene pointed out that there were many similarities between their timelines. The Beta Federated Commonwealth was very much like the Delta Imperial Federation. She also emphasized he would always have a friend in her, and George then responded that the only thing worse than not being able to return to his timeline, was not being able to return to hers.

Despite Ed telling both Will Hansen and Philip Harris that he couldn’t share much with them, they each continued to pepper him with questions. Finally, Ed said he would give them each some free advice. Ed told Harris that he really wants to make sure that he doesn’t immediately return to the Alphas and should try to accompany Agent Washington back to Beta Earth. Turning to Will, the man from the future said, “You can relax. Your time as Director of Project Infinity is over, but you’re still going to be very grateful for your involvement, and it will pay dividends in the future. I just realized I sound like a fortune cookie – let’s stick with relax.”

It was almost 11:00 when Agent Washington finally walked in. “Sorry for being late, Mr. Dalton – I mean Ed – please come with me. We’ll be back shortly, or at least I will.” Terry looked at Dalton, and sure as shit the man was still smiling.

After the short walk to Agent Washington’s small office, Terry sat in his faux leather chair and motioned for Ed to sit on a padded folding chair across from him. The two men stared at each other for a few moments across the metal desk. Terry spoke first, “You know, I’m trying really hard not to wipe that shit eating grin off your face.” Ed reacted immediately. He didn’t frown, or become angry, but changed his demeanor like a smarmy student who just realized the professor didn’t want his ass kissed. Ed’s brow furrowed slightly, and he leaned forward looking Washington right in the eye, and said, “You have my word I will answer all of your questions as honestly and completely as I can. Just be aware that there are some areas I can’t address. I’m sure you can surmise why, but I will not lie to you.”

Terry leaned back in his chair and looked at the ceiling. He actually believed Dalton, but he thought back to earlier in the year when he had believed Dr. Philip Harris, who was masquerading as Dr. William Foster. “Mr. Dalton [the other man wisely resisted the urge to say call me Ed], I would truly like to believe you, but I need some personal proof to assure myself that your motives are pure. In other words, how can I be sure you aren’t just an agent for the Alphas or some as yet unknown timeline leading me down a garden path?”

They discussed the report that had been prepared for Terry. When Washington asked if it was an example of Artificial Intelligence, Ed explained it was a product of the time loop. “It sounds like you, because it is you – in my history the archives show the document I gave you was your report. In essence I just saved you some time by providing you a copy of what you would have written on your own.”

Ed tried not to smile, so Terry wouldn’t think he was being flippant. “What else do you need? I can tell you that you and your wife are expecting another child next year. Do you want to know the gender, or the name you’ll choose?” Terry already knew Adele was pregnant, and that it was going to be a girl, but couldn’t resist asking, "Will the baby be healthy?” Ed assured him she would be. Terry thanked him, but pointed out his foreknowledge might establish he was from the future but didn’t establish Ed’s motives. Dalton said he had a potential solution which he would broach at the end of their discussion.

Terry brought up that as the Delta and the Gamma governments had at least tacitly supported the Directors’ Conspiracy there was no action he could take against Doctors McCoy or Foster. Further, the grants of asylum being granted to Dr. Hernandez and Sir George put them out of reach. He asked if Ed had recommendations as to Doctors Hansen and Harris.

Ed responded:
Well, I know that Will Hansen has been removed. Based on your report I’m confident the Betas will find just having him resign will be sufficient. I can tell you he can play a crucial role in the rapprochement with the Alphas. I would suggest you orally advise President Townsend that Will Hansen’s Alpha counterpart is going to develop a rare form of leukemia due to radiation exposure in the Alpha conflicts of the 2030s. The Beta Hansen is essentially an identical twin to the Alpha Hansen. Preceding President Townsend’s 2045 visit to Alpha Earth, the Will Hansen sitting down the hall will consent to the Alphas’ request to travel there to donate bone marrow to his analogue. This will aid in Townsend’s efforts to thaw the cold war with the Alphas. It will also provide Will with a measure of redemption, and, when he decides to permanently relocate to Alpha Earth, give him the family he never had in the Beta timeline.
Philip Harris is, as you know better than almost anyone else, is another story. He really didn’t have anything to do with the Directors’ Conspiracy but letting him return to the right now Alphas would be a mistake. He is so self-aggrandizing that people almost always come to believe he knows more than he does. If you let him go back to the Betas and give him an important title he’ll be fine. He will complain when you tell him he isn’t getting the promised $10,000,000, but, despite some manic behavior, Philip isn’t stupid. From what I know, if you want real revenge for the trouble he’s caused, make sure everyone calls him Phil.

After extracting a promise from Terry not to reveal information about the future of the others waiting down the hall, Ed sketched out their future biographies. Other than learning his daughter would be born healthy, Terry didn’t ask for any information on his own future. Ed then offered his plan for proving his sincerity. He said, “Come with me to the future.” Terry asked, “How’s that?” Dalton then detailed his plan:
Have me secured in my quarters tonight under guard. Then tomorrow you can handcuff me and take me through the portal to Beta Earth. So long as the exact time is noted in the logs my compatriots will hijack the window, and you will be deposited with me in the future. You can then confirm whatever you need to. Regardless of how long you’re there we’ll have you walking into the Beta reception area within a few seconds of when you were taken, albeit with no one else attached to your handcuff. You can even have Harris and Hansen accompany us, and they’ll go through to Beta Earth without interruption. It will appear to everyone in the present that I was somehow transported without effect on you or the others. Given that I was cuffed, and presumably thoroughly searched before going through the window, you’ll be blameless. Of course, I’ll need your word that none of this will be recorded or told to anyone else.

Terry asked why he just couldn’t add it to the secret addendum, and Ed explained that it was simply because while there was a record in his history of the escape there was no record of Terry traveling to the future. “I’m only guessing that’s what we did, or rather will do. It’s a leap of faith.” Terry said, “I’m not Catholic, but maybe I should have gone to Church with you today.”

Agent Washington called down the people on the team of the rotating escorts for Ed. He explained that Dalton was under arrest. Terry emphasized they were now actually guards and not escorts. To Ed Dalton’s surprise, Washington told the guards to talk to the technical team at the Transport Center about making Dalton’s quarters into a Faraday Cage. Terry had decided to trust Ed, but he still wanted to take precautions to make sure the man didn’t decide to leave prematurely.

Once he had made arrangements for Dalton’s security, Washington finally returned to the meeting room with the others. He then explained that the man they knew as Ed had been arrested, and he would personally escort the man within a day to the Beta timeline. Doctors Harris and Hansen would accompany them. Since Terry knew that Doctors McCoy and Foster were going to assert that he had no jurisdiction over them, he decided to preempt them by saying their assistance was no longer required, and that they could resume their duties.

Washington then said that he would like Sir George to return with him to Beta Earth for follow up. Wong replied, “I look very much forward to returning home, but I have already accepted an invitation to accompany Dr. McCoy to the Delta timeline. I will promptly notify you when my visit is completed.” Terry said, “That’s very nice, but unless you tell me you’ve requested and been granted asylum, you’re coming with me.’’ Irene McCoy answered for him, “Sir George has requested asylum, and my government has granted that request.” Wong merely nodded agreement.

Looking toward Doctors Hernandez and Foster, “Dr. Hernandez, the Alphas have requested your immediate return. Should I convey that the Gammas have granted your request for asylum?” Dr. Hernandez confirmed her request for asylum was approved and she would be staying on Gamma Earth. Washington said, “Well, I guess we’re done here. None of you have to have escorts any longer. Please don’t attempt to see or contact Ed. Dr. Foster, you should know the Shadow System update Dalton has provided has tentatively been deemed safe and will be used to open the portals to the Delta and Beta timelines tomorrow.”

Project C+ Transport Center, Australian Northern Territory 0914 hours ACST 2 November 2041 (Gamma Earth)

Dr. Philip Harris, Dr. William Hansen, FBI Special Agent Terrence Washington, and the man they only knew as Edward Dalton were patiently waiting for the window to Beta Earth to open. Dalton was handcuffed to Agent Washington. As far as everyone across four timelines knew Washington had placed Dalton under arrest for suspicion of espionage in the Beta timeline. Only a handful of those people knew that Dalton was actually a time traveler from the future.

The Shadow System update was actually being used to open a window to the Beta timeline even though VIPS was running in the background. Sir George Wong and Dr. Irene McCoy had already been safely transported to the Delta timeline. Dr. William Foster was overseeing operations, but Dr. Maria Hernandez was nowhere to be seen. Foster approached each of the men in turn and shook their hands before verifying their Data Cards to clear them for exiting the Gamma timeline. Terry was annoyed when Dr. Foster put an arm on Ed’s shoulder when shaking his hand, and then leaned in to whisper a few words. Rather than make an issue on the spot, and have a confrontation with Foster, Terry decided to go through the now opening window as quickly as possible and report the incident after getting back to the Beta timeline.

OMEGA TIMELINE VIPS MEETING CENTER

As the window began to open, Terry directed Harris and Hansen to start through. The Beta control room was now clearly visible as Terry walked into the window with Dalton. Instead of the usual cold air Terry felt when traveling between timelines it was downright freezing now, and the warmth on exit felt like an oven on broil. The feeling passed quickly, and Terry could tell he wasn’t in the Beta timeline.

He was in what looked like a well-furnished apartment. There was a window, and it appeared the sun was just setting. An attractive woman in casual clothing stood before them. Terry was still taking in his surroundings when Ed pulled up his arm and asked to be let out of his cuffs. Ed then said, “Let me introduce you to my boss,” but Terry interrupted, and addressed the woman directly – “Are you, my daughter?” She nodded, as he said, “It’s like looking at Adele.” His daughter replied, “Believe me I know it, but I also know I’m a little older than the Adele you’re going back to. Ed told me you don’t want to know my name, so unless it makes you uncomfortable just call me Adele.”

Ed whispered something to Adele and left the room. Adele then explained to Terry that they were in a version of VIPS on a future date she would prefer not to specify. The simulation was a fair approximation of her own apartment. She explained that rather than show him a lot of tech that he wouldn’t be allowed to share, they could just have a pleasant visit. “Now I might not be able to convince you I’m not part of an elaborate AI deception, but I’ve got some pulled pork using your very own secret homemade barbeque sauce, followed up by mom’s famous peach cobbler."

The meal was delicious, and Terry was firmly convinced that he wasn’t being misled. Someone who makes cobbler like Adele could not be evil. They spent just under two hours together. Terry opted for iced tea with the pork and had another Alpha type coffee with the cobbler. Even though they weren’t able to speak in great detail about his daughter’s life, Terry wasn’t frustrated. In fact, he was quite comfortable. The one substantive fact Adele communicated to Terry was that the interaction between Bill Foster and Ed at the Gamma portal came because Foster had discerned that Ed was his and Maria Hernandez’ son. Terry figured it made sense for what he now thought of as the Omegas to use loved ones to gain trust.

After spending just under two hours in the future, Terry noticed that Ed had walked back into the room. He asked Terry, “Are we good?” Terry said, “I think we are. So you work for my daughter. Is she a tough boss?” Both Ed and Terry’s daughter smiled, and she explained why – “Dad, Dalton calls me his boss. It’s a joke – we’re married.” Then Ed jumped in – “You now have the same uncomfortable look I believe I had when we first met – that’s when we first met from my perspective. As long as you don’t log this meeting, I can assure you that you’ll get more than even the next time you see me.”

Terry suddenly had more questions, about his other kids, and grandchildren, but his daughter pointed across the room to a slowly expanding point of light. They hugged, Terry reattached the handcuff to his left hand and walked into the window back to the past.

The Goddard Research Center, Greenbelt Maryland - 1918 hours EST 1 November 2041 (Beta Earth)

Once again Terry experienced more intense cold and heat when he passed through the time window. He found himself back on his own Beta Earth. The room was crowded. He saw Doctors Hansen and Harris were already being escorted out. Admiral Roberts approached him, and as Terry was evidently a little unsteady on his feet, the Admiral grabbed his arm. Washington quickly recovered, and then went into his roleplay by raising the hand attached to the empty handcuff and asking what happened to Dalton. Roberts offered his guess, “It looks like he was retrieved while still attached to you. There was a localized power surge after Hansen and Harris came through, and a several second delay before we saw you. What do you remember?” Washington lied, and said he just remembered walking out of Gamma Earth handcuffed to Dalton and appearing here without him.

Roberts tilted his head ever so slightly to the left and held up his hand to indicate he was getting a message in his ear implant. The Admiral gave a clipped, “Understood.” He then turned toward Washington and said, “I want you to go to medical and get a quick look over. After that we’ll forgo the usual debrief, as the President is downstairs and wants to speak to you personally. Hand me your Data Card and report, and I’ll ask a Secret Service Agent to bring you down after medical clears you.” Washington handed over the report and indicated he could go to the infirmary on his own.

The M.D. in the infirmary asked why he was there. When Terry said they just wanted medical clearance the Doctor took a swab from Terry’s cheek, checked his blood pressure, listened to his chest, and checked his ears, nose and throat. After putting the swab in a standard analyzer, the physician said, “Everything is within normal limits. Was there something special I was meant to look for?” Washington explained he had just had a rough trip through the portal. Just then he saw the Secret Service agent already waiting.

The Agent escorted him to the room where the President was waiting. Out of an abundance of caution they had turned the room into a Faraday Cage. Terry expected to be briefing a room full of people, but the President was alone. She smiled at him and motioned Terry to take a seat.

Patricia Townsend had his report in front of her. “I’ve barely started this. Can you give me the highlights?” Washington went on for about 40 minutes. He tried to cover everything and made a point of highlighting what Dalton had asked only to be conveyed orally to the President. He did not reveal his own trip to the future or what he knew of the identities of Ed and his “boss.”

The President said:
Well, some of what was predicted is already happening. The Alphas are livid. They’re especially upset the Gammas aren’t turning over Dr. Hernandez and that we’re keeping Dr. Harris. I’m not really as upset as the report predicted I would be. That’s not to say the report is inaccurate, as I plan to play the wounded party to get some leverage. The good news is it appears I’m a shoo-in for re-election.
I’m inclined to let this just play out to see if the predictions continue to be accurate. I would like you to stay close to me. How would you feel about transferring to the Secret Service, with a two-step bump?

Terry stated that it would probably be fine, but he wanted to speak with his wife first. The President said she understood, and then said, “To quote an Alpha movie I snuck to my youngest granddaughter, 'To infinity and beyond.’”

Epilogue

Ed’s predictions proved accurate. In December 2041 the Alphas expelled representatives from other timelines and recalled their own representatives. The Betas continued exchanges, but representatives from the Gamma and Delta timelines had their movements severely restricted. The Gammas and Deltas increased their contacts and cooperation. Despite the Alphas having chosen isolation, VIPS was never closed, so not all contact was cut off.

Dr. Philip Harris: Philip Harris was formally granted asylum on Beta Earth. The physicist did not get his $10,000,000.00, but he was hired to work at Project Infinity. He was given the title of Director of Interpretive Studies. The position essentially involved identifying useful technology that had become available through the Shadow System. Dr. Harris left Project Infinity in 2052, by which time the existence of other timelines was public knowledge, and travel was becoming common. His numerous requests to be allowed to return to Alpha Earth without fear of prosecution were all rejected. He never again left Beta Earth. Publication of Harris’ book A Trip Around the Multiverse, was done without being submitted for government vetting. After threats from the United States government on Beta Earth to return him to the Alphas, Harris issued a statement clarifying that his book was largely a work of fiction. The statement indicated the work exaggerated his own role in the steps toward unity (which it did), and falsely cited instances of time travel. It was not revealed that the time travel aspects of the Harris book were accurate until 2079, after Harris had died. Still, the work was popular and allowed Harris to live out a comfortable life.

President Patricia Townsend: As predicted, President Townsend became the person most credited with moving the four timelines towards unification. In her second term, shortly after revealing the existence of the alternate timelines to the public, she accepted the new United States President on Delta Earth’s invitation to visit that world. After their inter-timeline in person summit, the two Presidents went on to Gamma Earth, and the tour culminated in the triumphant first annual ABCD summit on Alpha Earth (with the locale rotating each year since). On leaving office in 2049 Townsend was tapped to chair the Inter-Timeline Regulatory Agency (INTRA). Townsend retired in 2058.

Dr. William Hansen: Resigned as Director of Project Infinity on his return to Beta Earth in 2041. He retained a title of consultant but had no real duties (having been replaced by Admiral Roberts). As Ed had predicted, Dr. William Hansen was contacted in 2045 to see if he would be willing to travel to Alpha Earth to be a donor for a bone marrow transplant for his Alpha analogue. The act was a major milestone in President Patricia Townsend’s initiative to repair the rift between the Alpha and Beta timelines. The operation was a success, and Hansen became so close to his counterpart’s family that he relocated to Alpha Earth.

Sir George Wong and Dr. Irene McCoy: Sir George remained on Delta Earth and was formally granted citizenship in that world’s Imperial Federation. His contributions in the area of quantum computing led to him becoming the first person granted knighthoods in two timelines. Dr. McCoy remained as the on-site director of technical services for Operation Reach until the organization became a separate cabinet department and her title was re-designated as Secretary for Inter-Timeline Operations from 2053- 2061. In 2043 she gave birth to George Wong, Jr., the first of her three children with Sir George. Irene and Sir George remained close throughout their lives, but never married. Sir George returned to Beta Earth in 2048, but he and Irene visited each other often, and their children were regular inter-timeline travelers. Sir George and Secretary McCoy both consistently refused to write their memoirs. Their oldest child followed his parent’s example, and Dr. George Wong, Jr., was generally agreed to be the premier computational scientist of his generation across all four timelines.

Doctors Maria Hernandez and William Foster: Bill Foster had realized the mysterious Ed was possibly his son after he found out the last name the man had adopted was Dalton. He had told Maria his suspicions before Ed had left Gamma Earth with Terry Washington. The whispered communication of Bill to Ed was telling him to look up to the balcony outside the Director’s office, “So you can see your mother wave goodbye.” Foster remained as Director of Project C+ (and its successor agencies on Gamma Earth) until 2060. Despite Maria Hernandez having been granted asylum by the Deltas, she was not permitted to work on Project C+ until 2044. Maria and Bill married in 2042, and the following year, after successful fertility treatments, Maria gave birth to healthy twins. The boy was named Dalton Eduardo Foster, after his two grandfathers. The girl was named Lourdes Barbara Foster after her grandmothers. After the thaw in relations with Alpha Earth, Maria’s parents were permitted to visit their grandchildren for the first time in 2045. In 2049 Patricia Townsend brought in Maria to head the joint scientific board under INTRA. The board was charged with seeing what new technology could be developed combining resources and research from all four timelines. Her team eventually discovered it was the Shadow System that was preventing new time travel. Maria’s team actually developed a work around, but the details remained classified and time travel was done only under tightly controlled conditions. Dr. Hernandez eventually did write her memoir, if only out of obligation to create the Omega timeline. Even though the memoir had no direct references to time travel, there was much speculation that many of the unanswered questions in the memoir could only be explained by time travel or the existence of a secret timeline. Bill and Maria’s granddaughter was the first child born with a grandparent from each of the four timelines. Maria Irene Wong was born to Lourdes Foster-Wong and George Wong, Jr., in 2067.

Terrence Washington: The daughter of Terry and Adele Washington was born on April 4, 2042. They named her Shirley. Terry left the Secret Service in 2044 but remained on President Townsend’s staff as an advisor. Washington was with the President on her tour of the timelines in 2045. His wife, Adele, was permitted to accompany him. During that visit Terry introduced his wife to Starbucks coffee. In 2046 Adele asked permission from the Beta United States government to enter negotiations with the Starbucks Coffee Company from the Alpha timeline to partner in bringing their products and franchise operations to the Betas. The Beta version of the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) found no conflict for Terrence Washington based on Adele’s proposed business activity. Realizing that at that time they lacked any means to enforce trademarks, or other trade secrets on Beta Earth, the Alpha Company quickly agreed to lend Adele Washington’s startup their expertise and other assistance in exchange for reimbursement of their outlays plus a 10% interest in the Beta version of Starbucks. Betas around the globe became quickly addicted. The agreement with Starbucks became a template for similar contracts between the four timelines. Terry left Government Service entirely in 2048. Thereafter, he worked with Adele to identify and negotiate with companies to license goods and services throughout the timelines. In 2054 their company, ATW, Inc., was the second private enterprise on Beta Earth to receive a charter to construct license portals for travel to other timelines. In essence it became a travel agency. They gave Sir George Wong a 10% stake in the company in exchange for his services. Each of Terry and Adele’s children went on to take leading roles in ATW, Inc.

Dalton Eduardo Foster (Ed): The man who would be best known as simply Ed, was raised on Gamma Earth but traveled frequently to the other Earths. He attended the combined MIT program from 2061-2065, wherein by agreement the four versions of the University each had him for classes for a year. Ed was pursuing his Masters at Princeton on Beta Earth when he met Shirley Washington, who was recruiting for Computer Engineers for ATW, Inc., but Dalton instead took an offer to work for INTRA’s Joint Science Board, who agreed to pay for his Doctorate at the Delta version of Cambridge University. Dalton and Shirley still stayed in touch. They quickly realized their parents had known each other from their work even before knowledge of the other timelines was common. By 2067 Dalton and Shirley were planning to marry, and Dalton finally met her parents in person. Dalton immediately thought Adele Washington was great. Meeting Adele in person served to emphasize to Dalton just how much Shirley resembled her mom. When Dalton went to greet Mr. Washington, the man turned and said, “So you’re just another asshole scientist, who thinks he knows what’s best? Well, let me just say that I know exactly where you’re coming from, and I don’t like it one bit.” Dalton took a step back and looked to Shirley, who appeared nearly as confused as he felt. Just then Adele smiled and gently pushed Terry Washington on the back saying, “Terry. You’re scaring both of them. Please just explain that you’re a moron, as, while Shirley knows that she may not have told Dalton.” Terry turned, trying to continue to look severe, but soon broke up, “Just giving you a hard time, but trust me when I say you’ll get even. I assume you know I know your parents. I even met you and your sister when you were toddlers. Do you mind if I call you Ed?”

Alpha Earth: The Alphas remained isolated for more than two years after the implementation of the Shadow system. The immediate successor to Dr. Hernandez as Director of Project Gypsy was newly promoted Major General Shea, who had issued warnings about both Doctors Hernandez and Harris before their defections. Shea was just the latest in a string of Admirals and Generals being placed in charge of important agencies and departments in the Alpha version of the United States following the conflicts from the 2020s and 2030s. True, the President was duly elected, and, like many of those he appointed, he was retired from the military, but more than a few believed he might not follow the 22nd Amendment forbidding him from serving beyond his second term.
The Alphas were the last of the timelines to acknowledge the existence of alternate Earths to the general public. They only made the revelation after agreeing to Townsend leading the other timeline Presidents on a visit to Alpha Earth. They had already been fighting growing public outcry after a work entitled Escape from Alpha Earth had been disseminated online. Philip Harris had left a dead man’s switch that automatically published the material if he hadn’t accessed it in a year. It was meant to be a novel, but given the real names, and locations referred to in the work, and Harris’ disappearance, the public and the U.S. Congress began asking questions. Thus, while the Alphas eventually forgave Maria Hernandez, Philip Harris was always going to be persona non grata.
The access to the Shadow System did give the Alphas access to useful information for recovery from their recent conflicts. The other timelines offered political, economic, and technological solutions, and it was finally decided the speed of the Alpha recovery would be enhanced by direct contacts.
The Betas offered especially useful technological solutions to the Alphas radiological damage. In many ways, the Gamma failures to cope with long term wars provided insights on what to avoid. By 2042 the United Kingdom had already joined into an economic union with Canada, Australia and New Zealand known as CANZUK. The war and looking toward the success of Anglo integrations in the Delta and Beta timelines led to a stronger Commonwealth, with Ireland actually rejoining in 2048. CANZUK came to include the entire Commonwealth in an Anglo-Confederation in 2051.
The rebuilding of the European Union after its 2035 dissolution came slowly. By 2049 there was a New European Union divided into five groups. There was a Scandinavian Group, as well as Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Groups. Integration progressed so that by 2071, all of Continental Europe fell under the organization which became the Continental Union.
To deal with continuing issues of illegal immigration, and recovery from their conflicts, the Alpha United States worked to build or rebuild regional international organizations. In addition to the European and Commonwealth consolidations they encouraged the creation of similar cooperative institutions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The last American occupation forces stationed around the globe returned to the United States in 2057.

Beta Earth: The Betas in many ways were in the catbird seat in 2042. Their last major conflict was decades in their past. The technology they had developed in the aftermath of the Sino-Soviet War was superior to that of the other worlds. Likewise, the development of cheap clean fusion technology gave them an advantage. Patricia Townsend was also an important asset. President Redpath of Delta Earth was just as farsighted, but it was Townsend who leveraged her world’s advantages.
The Betas were quick to exploit their technology, and moved to commercialize, and in some ways privatize, inter-timeline travel and communication. There were setbacks and mistakes. In 2053 the Betas chartered Multiverse-Travel, Ltd., as the first private company to operate a portal for travel to the other Earths. Only Delta Earth accepted travelers sent by the company, and they shut it down when the company was found to have bypassed a Delta reception center to send clients directly to a Cabo San Lucas resort. No Data Cards were examined, and when it was found that other travelers sent by the company were missing inoculations, the Deltas withdrew from the agreement. The Betas quickly revoked the company’s charter. In the following year ATW, Inc., received a new charter for private inter-timeline travel. They solved the problems of the predecessor company by just leasing time on one of the many new government portals, and ensuring travel would only be to sites approved by the receiving government. By 2056 they were sending people to all three timelines, and, within a decade, each timeline had at least a dozen companies contracted to lease government portals to move people and products.

Gamma Earth: The Gammas gained more than the other timelines from their contacts. They were able to make great strides in rehabilitating many areas that had been thought to be permanently uninhabitable due to their 20th century nuclear exchanges. Their cleanup actually progressed much faster than the Alphas because of the greater amount of time that had passed. In fact, many of the areas rehabilitated were repopulated with refugees from the Alpha timeline. This was a win-win in that the Alpha refugee crisis was somewhat mitigated. The refugees were in most cases settling in areas geographically identical to their former homes, and the Gammas were accelerating the recovery of their world.
With the political resurgence of previously devastated areas, the Gammas recreated a League of Nations. The United States remained dominant, but global cooperation became as important as inter-timeline cooperation. The Gammas had exchanged Tasmanian Tigers with the Deltas to increase the genetic diversity of both timelines’ populations. They also provided all three timelines with passenger pigeons who had not gone extinct in the Gamma timeline thanks to Teddy Roosevelt’s conservation efforts starting in 1909.
After initial contact the Gammas started off about 10 to 20 years behind the other timelines in technology. They took a page from the Deltas and created their own Agency for Scientific Research and Development (ASRD). Within five years they had caught up with their sister timelines.

Delta Earth: The Deltas came to refer to themselves as the Goldilocks timeline – not too hot and not too cold. They were the quieter version of the Betas. Their political situation was stable. The Delta Earth of the 2040s had long since settled into relatively peaceful nation-states and trading blocks.
The Deltas were the first of the timelines to acknowledge the existence of their sister Earths to the public when President Redpath made an address shortly after the Presidential election in November 2044. Redpath herself wasn’t running, but both of the major party candidates had been briefed on Operation Reach. Redpath made the announcement after the election to take the decision away from her successor. The Imperial Federation Prime Minister had been read in on the program years earlier, but other world leaders found out just hours before the President’s address. The relative calm of the public in hearing such startling news gave impetus to the Betas, Gammas, and even the Alphas to tell their worlds.
The Deltas were behind the Betas on fusion technology, but they traded their superior battery and VR tech for access to that breakthrough. They became intermediaries for the Alphas, who preferred dealing with them to the Betas. Even though the Delta technology was in general on par with the Alphas and Betas, they proved the most adept at quickly adapting different approaches from the other timelines to make generational improvements in medical treatment and pharmacological research.
Delta Earth had the most robust trade policy. They traded their own technology and research. They did tech for tech trades with the Betas, tech for resources with the Gammas, and, somewhat surprisingly, tech for entertainment with the Alphas. The Alphas were more than happy to provide licenses for their literary works, films, and other media in exchange for access to Delta technology. Prior to the INTRA arbitration panels, creators of the traded works often received no compensation for Delta use of their works. Even after the panels, it was found the Alpha governments and not the Deltas were responsible for compensating those artists.

Creating the Omega Inter-Time Multiverse: It took decades before the four Earths were sufficiently integrated that the average person no longer thought of the worlds as being separate timelines. By the early 2070s one would speak of being from Beta Earth in the same way they would speak of having German ancestry.
The creation of the Inter-Timeline Regulatory Agency (INTRA) in 2049 was a major step in integration. The agency was tasked with overseeing transfers of technology and intellectual property between the timelines. A system for licensing technology and copyrighted works was put in place along with a method for compensating the holders of the original patents and copyrights. By the time President Townsend retired in 2058, INTRA had representatives from most of the nations in each timeline. It was overseeing movement of goods and labor between the timelines and regulated commercial travel between Earths. INTRA also employed arbitration panels to enforce Inter-Timeline agreements and regulations. The panels also made determinations as to whether a company in one timeline deserved compensation if an individual or company in another timeline was employing their products, designs, or trademarks. The aggrieved company in such a case would have to show the new company in the other timeline was employing essentially identical products, processes or designs, and that they were not developed independently. Thus, the Coca-Cola Company existed in all four timelines, and could not arbitrate any actions taken before the timelines became aware of each other, but the Beta timeline’s replacing Tab with Diet Coke in 2050 was deemed predatory in that the formula and taste of the new product was indistinguishable from the Alpha version introduced in 1982.
Throughout the 2040s the sharing of knowledge improved the quality of life across the timelines. It allowed for ultimately futile research to be discontinued when it was revealed that another timeline had already determined it was a dead end. On the other hand, it created immediate cures for a myriad of conditions that were plaguing one or more timelines when it was revealed another timeline already had a cure or treatment, Alzheimer’s being the most prominent example. Although there were relatively few people like Dr. Hansen with exact analogues on the other Earths, almost everyone immediately had a larger pool of closely related people available. Even if you didn’t need a transplant, you still had an enlarged family (though some considered this a negative).
Besides the Gammas sending Tasmanian Tigers and Passenger Pigeons to the other timelines, there were exchanges of animals endangered in one timeline to rescue the species in another. This even extended to plant life and the lifesaving cures preserved in the Gamma version of the Amazon Basin.
The Delta opening of King Tut’s tomb more than 125 years after it occurred in the other timelines created a stir. Less exciting, but perhaps more important, was the realization that determining the viability on oil fields, natural gas deposits, and commercial mines required drilling or exploring in only one timeline. This resulted in significant savings in time, energy and capital. Likewise, space exploration was made more efficient as a probe need only be launched in one timeline for all four to get the information.
Human space travel did not result in colonies on Mars or the Moon. There were mining operations on both bodies and in the asteroid belt, but it was mostly done by robotics. Although transport by the Portals through space was technically possible, and had in fact been done, it was found that the stability of the windows was not always reliable, such that by the time an object passed through the window, it may have moved by up to 9 meters. Further, if man hadn’t been there, it was impossible to find entangled particles to create a window. So, there was no transport outside the solar system. Thus, man still traveled by spaceship, and then only within the Sol system. Due to time constraints few made journeys beyond Mars.
Politically, there remained differences in the four timelines. The United States in one form or another existed on each world, but a United States citizen on one Earth wasn’t recognized as a citizen on the other Earths. Under the auspices of INTRA, each nation on each world enforced their own policies for visas, immigration, and trade. Most nations set up streamlined procedures for immigrants from other timelines who were citizens or subjects of analogue nations.
The major Religions adapted better than anyone would have predicted. The Catholic Popes formed permanent contacts utilizing a dedicated VIPS connection. The other faiths were similarly nonplused, and generally found no contradictions to their doctrine. Hindus saw it as a proof of their beliefs. Mormons redoubled their efforts to find salvation for ancestors and their newfound “near ancestors.” Several new faiths developed, but all largely died out by the late 2050s.
By the 2070s the Alphas, Betas, Gammas and Deltas had all become Omegas.

Dr. Dalton Eduardo Foster was excited. After more than two years of training, and dozens of simulations, he was going to travel back to New York City’s Times Square just before midnight Eastern Standard Time on December 31, 2040, Beta Earth. He would actually appear on a subway platform while the revelers above ground were counting down to the New Year. To the best of his knowledge, Dalton was the only person assigned to Operation Blender to actually receive a mission go for time travel.

His mission was to facilitate the actions of the now famous figures who would bring about the first steps toward unity of the four Earth timelines. Dalton didn’t kid himself about why he was selected for the mission. His parents, Bill and Maria Foster, were two of those history making people. Much of the reason for this mission was justified by the memoir of his mother, who in the year he was going to was still Dr. Maria Hernandez. Dalton had been itching to start his mission for months but was reminded they had an almost unlimited time to launch the mission, as he would always be sent to the same time and place to start. When Dalton voiced even mild impatience, he was subtly reminded that anyone could be sent back in his place, so long as the replacement took the same actions, and left the “Unifiers” with the same impressions. Dr. Foster took the hint, kept his mouth shut, and trained hard.

Besides a warm overcoat, scarf, watch cap, and gloves, Dalton was wearing dress slacks, and sweater over a button-down shirt, with comfortable shoes. Everything was era appropriate to 2040. He was carrying an overnight bag. Dalton’s specially modified cranial implant would allow monitoring by Operation Blend and give him a means of communication when he felt the need. Once Dalton had secured his position at Project Infinity, he would be able to schedule short term returns to the future when his alter ego, Data Input Specialist Edward Dalton, would have vacation. He could also call for an emergency retrieval. As it would be a long-term mission, Dalton was glad they had programed time so he could return to see Shirley and the kids.

Dalton’s Doctorate was in Computational Engineering, and he was part of the design team that had come up with the interface for his cranial implant to access and insert data into Beta computer systems. He also carried a personal electronic device that appeared to be no different than the devices carried by millions of others in the time he was traveling to. The plan was for Dalton to access a public computer and use his interface to enter a myriad of databases, including the United States Defense Department Secret Internet Router Network (SIPRNet).

In short order the databases would be altered to create a complete history for Edward Dalton. They would establish school records, employment and credit histories, and a very boring social media profile. The Ed Dalton of 2041 was divorced with no children, and, aside from being an avid baseball fan, had no real interests outside work. Most importantly, he had a Top-Secret Security Clearance and was moving to Maryland to assume a new position at a Top-Secret program called Project Infinity. Dalton was looking forward to meeting his parents and the other unifiers when they were in their prime. Of course, he would not see either of his parents for months, as his dad was on Gamma Earth and his mom had just left Beta Earth to take over as the Project Gypsy Director in the Alpha timeline.

Suddenly, Dalton listened as the countdown he had requested began. It really wasn’t necessary, but he felt a countdown gave the proceedings a historical flair. As the countdown reached zero Dalton stepped into the fully open window. He felt the intense cold he had been prepared for by the simulations, followed by the expected heat as he began to step out. Suddenly the cold returned and was again replaced by a blast of hot air. Dalton stepped onto the empty subway platform. Something seemed off – it was Times Square Station and looking up a staircase Dalton could see that, as he had been briefed, the gates were closed to prevent overflow into the station until police could control the movements of people entering the station after the ball drop. He could tell from the noise that the ball had indeed just dropped.

Dalton then saw that the subway cars waiting for the partiers to arrive were decades out of date. Indeed, it looked like they still had a motorman’s compartment. He was beginning to think he was in the wrong year. Attempts to communicate with his point of departure via the cranial implant failed. Likewise, the emergency retrieval message got no response. Seemingly out of nowhere a bundled-up man with an actual newspaper under his arm approached Dalton from the opposite end of the platform. The man walked directly up to Dalton and said, “Dr. Foster, my name is Philip Harris. Happy New Year and Welcome to 1968.”
