This would be both:
  • Completely insane and logistically impossible, debatably making fucking Sealion look reasonable.
  • Completely out of character for the notoriously cautious and opportunistic Stalin, who wouldn't be dumb enough to wreck his military invading god damn Alaska and destroy the Union's already tenuous relations with the United States. Despite the memes Trotsky won't be insane enough to do this either.
The only way something like this even remotely happens is if the US collapse into multi-sided civil war and the Soviets wind up occupying some parts of Alaska.

USSR invades Alaska and the AL Can highway, let alone a full fledged Railroad gets built in record time with the full cooperation of the fine folks up north. After all the Canadians will want help protecting the Strategic Maple Syrup reserve, yes it is a real thing people have been caught stealing from it.

I recall that during the time period mentioned here was one of the few years where more people emigrated from rather than immigrated to the United States. Mostly people heading to the Soviet Union. Much like virtually all foreigners, they eventually all were ‘disappeared’, either by execution or the Gulags. Do we see any emigrants taking part in this invasion? Or do we get a fifth column of sorts?

IOTL, the decline of foreign workers had preceded the terror. Emigration due to the discontinuation of payment in hard currency plus poor working conditions drove much of it. During the terror, many simply got deported while others ended up in the Gulag system. I can’t find exact statistics for the ratio of deportations to Gulag sentences though. But yeah, I am given to understand that majority of foreign workers left the country either via emigration or deportation while a significant minority were arrested. That significant minority could possibly form penal battalions, although Americans would constitute an absolutely tiny percentage of them. Most would be Germans.
