I am contemplating a story set in the 1890s. Correct infantry usage of rifles is something I'd like to depict (British and American armies at this time). Can anybody point me to something like a field manual for infantry from that time frame? A document that would be a training guide for a new infantry solider as to how to use his rifle when fighting. I've seen such manuals in electronic format...but the ones I can find are for later time frames..
My limited understanding is that things like indirect fire were techniques taught in the time ... but since abandoned....so I don't think the more modern manuals would give an accurate depiction.
