Wars that surprisingly never happened

There are some wars between rivals or major powers that never ended up happening, or only happened in a minor way early on but never reached a penultimate stage where things get settled.

For instance, America and Russia never went to war (besides minor intervention in the Russian Civil War). As Russia arose, the Habsburg and Ottomans never had a true final fight.

What are some examples of a final war or major war to settle things once and for all but never happened?

USA hadn't much of ways fight with Russia before WW2. It would be really challenging. And after WW2 nuclear weapons avoided that.

I think that avoiding of some civil wars is quiet miraclous. Speciality that Soviet Union fell that peacefully and even its successor states were mostly quiet peaceful beside some wars on Caucasus and of course that one current war.

There was this book I read about 1871 London. Basically every lord and rich men bet that Austria would join against Prussia with the French with some poor lads who had no idea about geopolitics. Those lads made a killing afterwards. 1871 everyone thought that Austria was going to come knocking for Round 2 but it surprisingly did not happen.
