WWWIII A Collaborative timeline.

The POD for this time line is June 26, 1948 when in OTL the US began the Berlin air lift to ease the Soviet blockade of Berlin. Please note if Nukes are to be used Use them before Feb 1, 1949, or at least use it before the reds. Thread open to Jan 1, 1960.

  • June 26,1948: Soviet Forces shoot down an American Cargo Plane Heading towards West Berlin Calling it an act of War.The Us demands that the Soviets lift Their Blockade of West Berlin in 24 hours of face dire consequences.
  • June 27, 1948 Soviet troops march into West Berlin calming that they have liberated the city from Western imperialism.
  • June 28, 1948: President Truman Asks Congress to declare War on the Soviet Union. The resounding passes a joint session 400-135.
  • June 29 1948: Top secret discussions between President Truman begin on weather or not to use Atomic Bombs against the Soviet union before they can get one and use it against us or our allies.

nukes would be used almost immediately since we had drawn down forces and the russians really had not. not sure if it would be Moscow or Leningrad , but a russian city or two would have been vaporized with in a month of fighting and the war would be over and the USSR would be dismantled.

Agreed. We only had Third Army in Europe at the time. The British had only I Corps. Conventional war was not an option, and holding ground would have been impossible.

it think setting a conventional war during the 70s is slightly more plausible though the cause of the war would have to be a crisis that did not happen in the OTL

Do note that it was a consideration of this specific topic (World War III beginning when the Berlin Airlift gets hostile) that led me to this board in the first place. However, having revisited it, I don't think that a war at this point makes sense for anyone. Certainly not the Soviets, who are still trying to solidify their hold on Eastern Europe and would have their supply lines threatened by Polish and Ukrainian partisans.

In any case, the OP should be revisited - for two reasons. First of all, the ultimatum given by the US on June 26th has to be justified. We had no way to back up our claims beyond turning on the instant sunshine. Nuclear weapons would have been the first resort of the United States. As a consequence (second reason), by June 29th you're not looking at the US considering using nuclear weapons, you're looking at modified B-29s arriving in England and the Air Force brass choosing targets.

But then you get to dance around the "nukes fall EVERYBODY dies" issue. Takes some rationalization, and it's unlikely that you'd get this to happen in a collaborative timeline endeavor.
